to note that pains and physical symptoms linked with mood episodes are not restricted to the frail and elderly For example headaches and stomachaches are common complaints among children and adolescents who develop depression With co occurring depression and pains the discomfort may be felt in our knees shoulders back head or gut However the origins often reside elsewhere in our brains Science has learned that certain chemical messengers neurotransmitters are involved in controlling mood and pain pathways between our brains and bodies Serotonin and norepinephrine for example go hand in hand in the regulation of both mood symptoms and pain pathways A number of other chemical messengers in the brain such as mu opioids glutamate and inflammatory compounds join them in the parade It makes sense that mechanisms common to both depressions and physical ailments lead to co occurrence of symptoms How can I feel better There is strong evidence that physical symptoms are quite common among people who have depression yet the association is still often overlooked Trying to treat the body s pain without addressing the bigger brain based picture limits the chances of a successful outcome One large study observed that more than half of individuals with depression described unexplained pain or other somatic symptoms Other studies have found that physical symptoms sometime precede the more classic depressive symptoms by as much as five years However another large study noted that two thirds of those with clinical depressions reported only physical symptoms to their doctors They did not even mention their underlying mood symptoms When one or the other of these important pieces is missing in the patient s discussion the busy clinician is led down a confusing diagnostic path When that happens either the legitimate medical problem or the legitimate mood disorder is not treated
