    inertia Jowsey suggests countering sabotaging thoughts with a can do attitude It s truly a matter of just doing it one step in front of the other 2 Strap on a pedometer Fastened to the waist a pedometer tracks steps and encourages you to walk more to increase your step count Put it on when you get up and wear it until bedtime Researchers I talked to claimed that counting steps with a pedometer is a terrific motivator and has a greater psychological impact than counting miles notes Ken Walker MD a Toronto Ontario based physician and medical columnist I found that knowing I walk 9 100 steps in an average day pushed me to see how much I could step up my own activity People who wear a pedometer are also more likely to stick with a walking program 3 Record your steps in a logbook For the first week don t change your activity level Just record how many steps you typically take in a day This gives you a starting point After a week use your logbook as your guide to reaching 10 000 If you typically walk about 2 000 steps add another 500 and aim for 2 500 a day for week one Your week two goal is 3 000 each day The idea is to build slowly 4 Look for opportunities to move Avoid drive through tellers instead park the car and walk inside to get your coffee or do your banking Take the stairs instead of the elevator Stroll to your coworker s cubicle for face time instead of emailing her During TV commercials do minor chores Put away the remote and change channels the old fashioned way Exercise doesn t have to mean a workout at the gym getting sweaty or even breathing hard says Kendal Bradley project manager of Minding Our Bodies at the Canadian Mental Health Association CMHA One of the keys to overcoming inertia is to take on activity in small doses over a period of time Music is a great motivator to move Plug into your iPod while picking up and incorporate dance moves into your housework You want to get creative and build on the activities you already do says Bradley According to Riemann these kinds of tasks are good first steps for patients in recovery from depression because not only do they get the heart pumping but they offer a little sense of accomplishment and a boost in mood As one s mood picks up so does the desire to get moving and the wheels are set in motion 5 Add a walking session to your day As you start to feel better and fitter incorporate a 10 20 or 30 minute walking session into your routine This direct exercise component may start at a baseline level says Riemann because the last thing anyone wants to do is set up for failure Any such sustained exercise is good for the heart good for the limbs and
