understand what happened to me My challenges with depression were principally a combination of a genetic predisposition and deeply traumatic events as a youth The episodes didn t just come out of nowhere my mental health had unknowingly spiraled downward during my teen years The major depressive episodes were my brain s subconscious reaction to too many unexpressed unresolved emotions stuck within me Thereafter chronic depression and generalized anxiety set in Years later at the urging of my dear wife I received excellent treatment by caring professionals including psychotherapy and psychotropic medications NAMI training has helped While I continue to have occasional bad days life is generally good As long as I take good emotional care of myself I m not concerned that major episodes will return Dealing with these diseases has benefited me My family members tell me I ve become more caring communicative patient and helpful I enjoy life now So rattlesnakes and mental illness can be very scary when we don t know much about them But as we become enlightened and we treat them properly we learn to appreciate their benefits Tagged with anxiety Depression Major Depressive Episode About the author Owen Has 26 Articles Owen Ashton is author of the book Rising Above Fog A Riveting True Story of Personal Triumph a memoir of his journey from a locked down hospital psychiatric ward for major depressive episodes when he was 18 to recovery and advocacy Recognized as an engaging and humorous inspirational speaker he has given keynote speeches and other presentations on mental health advocacy at business and mental health conferences and other events from Washington D C to his home state of Utah Now well into his second career as a mental health advocate he is a CPA and previously was in the senior financial management of AT T NEXTEL and other organizations located in the New York City Chicago and Salt Lake City areas He also was with Big Four accounting firms including KPMG He s on the board of directors of NAMI Utah and the National Speakers Association Mountain West chapter He and Becky his wife of forty years are the parents of seven children and are now empty nesters His website OwenAshton com LEAVE YOUR COMMENT Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked First Name or Nickname Do not use full name Email Message RELATED ARTICLES Managing Depression and Living Well February 10 2016 11 01 am Through Veterans own voices Veterans have the chance to hear from trusted and credible sources other Veterans like themselves In this video hear Veterans share their Appreciating the Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma Experienced by Therapists February 2 2016 12 35 am The long row of 80 motorcycle police officers in a two wide formation was followed by a black hearse and a black limousine We passed them Douglas M Duncan The Politician s Courageous Depression Disclosure February 1 2016 2 52 pm In his 24 year career
