R C Alberta As a caregiver many people may see me as a positive outgoing individual They do not know the bleak struggle I have had with recurring depression It tends to isolate me from the very people I need That s what I attempt to be for others but many times I cannot find those types of people when I am mired down in depression and tears flow down my face like today B C As a man work has largely given me a sense of self worth But because of a deep dark depression I lost my job and was unable regain employment I then made a big mistake by trying suicide With the help of hospitals doctors medications counselors friends family and a belief that God could and would help me I am doing much better even though I am still unemployed E G F Victorville CA I find the best way to deal with depression is daily exercise and a balanced diet I know it sounds obvious but it s the best way to keep your mood even Name withheld Managing my stress level is a key to managing my depression Also exercise helps along with music therapy cognitive behavioral therapy support groups and support from friends and family Name withheld Depression affected my life in my late teens through my late 20s The approach I take to life is now mostly optimistic in theory at least I try not to look to the past too much but instead focus on who I am today and how I ve grown stronger from my affliction I find many lessons learning experiences invaluable I realize that I wouldn t have the many opportunities that I do today if I hadn t once suffered from severe clinical depression Name withheld When first struck with depression I was a teenager in Iowa Being strong and silent was in style so I continued to hurt a lot Later I dropped out of college and saw a psychiatrist In those days most of them didn t prescribe medication After that I periodically received the talking cure In the 70s I received medication for the first time and I have been a happy camper ever since W H J Ojai CA Imagine holding on to a piece of dental floss as you go down a storm drain during a hurricane Every aspect of my life over 100 jobs eight careers three businesses 23 incarcerations six colleges 33 girlfriends three marriages six figure losses six doctors over 43 med combinations and a partridge in a pear tree got me to the person I am today the person who I was supposed to grow up to be me J C L San Francisco CA Even when I was old enough to remember that something was troubling me I did not feel right What was difficult to express starting about 40 years ago was my sense of self Men weren t encouraged to say how they

  • The laugh track | Esperanza - Hope To Cope
good laughter is a reliable indicator of my emotional and psychological state like a kind of barometer If my capability is low then I know I need to attend to something or other to regain a more agreeable state Plus not instead Critics emphasize that laughter clubs should not be seen as a substitute for professional care This is not a studied or effective form of treatment says Barbara L Milrod MD a psychiatry professor at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City who specializes in anxiety disorders Depression is a serious treatable illness that responds to competent responsible treatment delivered by well trained professionals It is not a joke Milrod also warns that someone with a mood disorder who tries group laughter and finds that the chortling doesn t come easily may end up feeling inadequate which may contribute to the anxiety or depression they already feel When Tanaz decided to attend a Laughter Yoga training in 2004 she says Everyone was laughing but I didn t feel it Despite her unremarkable first encounter she persisted at home by watching videos of groups doing the program After about a year she says laughter exercises were making a big difference in how I felt I was more upbeat more at peace Her whole outlook on life improved and in 2006 she founded her own laughter club The most important thing she adds was realizing I still had the capacity for joy Tanaz hasn t abandoned medication and other coping strategies but her doctor gives the laughter routine a lot of credit It took me a while to warm up to the idea that laughter therapy does really help says Nasr but the remarkable change in the course of Tanaz s illness made a believer out of me I am convinced that laughter yoga was essential to the fact that she has not relapsed in years despite many social stressors Nasr sees laughter as a kind of adjunct tool an add on to medication for patients who need something additional to reach that level of wellness and feel happy rather than just keep their illness under control He adds Just as we laugh because we feel happy we can feel happy because we laugh Home improvement Participants in a laughter club meeting progress through various exercises greeting laughter hearty laughter open mouthed silent laughter and so forth with each type of laughter sustained for up to a minute Simulated laughter may erupt into genuine giggles and guffaws even if only because of the recognition of how ridiculous it is says Cook If getting out of bed is a challenge much less getting out of the house you can find videos of group laughter sessions on YouTube or purchase an instructional DVD There s an even easier way to get started says wellness coach Nira Berry Just open your mouth into a wide smile and force the breath out with a ho ho ha ha Then repeat Berry a breast cancer survivor says she was really down after going through her medical treatment She discovered laughter exercises on the Internet while researching ways to combat her low mood Sometimes I would just lie in bed and watch my stomach move up and down as I laughed a few times I noticed that it did make me feel more upbeat and reduced my pain she recalls She expanded her laughter routine to the shower the car and eventually to LaughingRx classes she leads in Bethesda Maryland She also produced her own DVD called Laugh Off Stress to reach people who are too depressed to come to a class or don t feel comfortable in a group Berry makes a point of laughing as much as possible every day to create a joy filled life Cook also finds he has more joy in his life now laughing naturally with his wife and friends in a way that wasn t possible when he was depressed When necessary though Cook practices the laughter techniques on his own to relieve anxiety stimulate energy or just for fun It doesn t take much for a shift in my physiology and temperament to take place Sidebar Fake it til you make it When it comes to elevating mood does genuine laughter in response to something funny equal the prompted chuckles of laughter therapy Rod A Martin PhD CPsych a psychology professor at Western University in Ontario and author of The Psychology of Humor An Integrative Approach votes no Laughter without mirth is not likely to have much benefit The emotion of mirth is linked with activation of dopamine in the brain to produce feelings of pleasure Research has shown that the funnier something is to a person the more strongly the pleasure center part of the brain is activated In effect Martin suggests mirth is the important element to feeling uplifted not laughter per se Of course depression tends to put the kibosh on spontaneous mirth But Madan Kataria MD the founder of Laughter Yoga insists that you don t need joy jokes or a sense of humor to laugh Laughter can come from the body itself instead of the mind he says and still produce all the mental and physical benefits of real laughter Kataria a family physician in India launched the first laughter club in 1995 His method includes deep breathing and playful tension releasing movements such as arm swinging and rhythmic clapping When your mind is trapped with emotions your breath gets trapped too he says By freeing your breath you can free your mind Charles Schaefer PhD a psychology professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University argues that the body doesn t know when laughter is fake Once the brain signals the body to laugh the body doesn t care why says Schaefer who has documented that both manufactured laughter and self imposed smiling enhance mood It s going to release endorphins it s going to relieve stress as a natural physiological response to the physical

  • Maureen McCormick: Dropping the Act | Esperanza - Hope To Cope
really helped you get it all together finally A Yeah when I met my husband my world truly did change He was the first guy that I could be with where I could show all of my weaknesses and he still he loved me and he accepted me I remember the first night that we went out we talked until 3 in the morning and I told him about my cocaine addiction I didn t tell him about my sadness then and my depression But I figured hey if I could tell him about the coke and he was still listening this was a good thing So we dated for three years It was a very very rocky relationship It was very I was very high and very low all of the time I would explode over the smallest little things I would just go crazy There s a name for this Q So even though you really were quite happy and had kicked the drugs you still had these mood cycles and could get set off and then A There was one evening where it was so so bad I believe that this was after we were married and we were living in an apartment on Wilshire Boulevard in a high rise And I wanted to jump off the balcony I wanted to end my life I just had this pain that wouldn t go away I couldn t understand it And even though I had met the most wonderful man in the entire world I couldn t figure out why I was still so sad I couldn t figure out why I was crying myself to sleep every night and that my pain wasn t going away Q I think you had a girlfriend She felt you were depressed and there are things to do for it A Right And I was just like Oh my gosh there s a name for what I have and you can see that maybe I do have a problem but it s okay and that I can go somewhere and get some help and actually feel better I was amazed I mean people did not talk about depression at all And if you did hear about somebody that was depressed there was a stigma attached to it And you kind of would look down upon them like Why are they depressed You know they should be able to fight this Q Buck up yeah A They should be able to work it out and figure it out themselves Finding help hope Q So luckily this time you met with a compassionate level headed physician A I did at last and that was somebody that was great And they told me that I had probably been depressed for years and years And that it was time to probably try medication which scared the hell out of me Q Which is interesting after all of the things you d taken right A Right You would think that I would have just been saying Okay just give them all to me but I was such an addict I was so afraid of becoming addicted to anything else So it was an interesting process It took me when I started on my medication it was about six to eight weeks I remember going through a period where I was just racing and I couldn t slow down and I couldn t stop And I remember the doctor telling me Hang in there hang in there it will get better And I thought Well if this is what I m going to feel like I don t want any part of this But I hung in there thank God And it was Q Was it a gradual improvement or did you wake up one day and felt different A I think I felt different one day when I woke up That s what I remember And it was absolutely astounding the difference that I felt I still get depressed I still get down But I had this kind of hope for the first time in years and years and years where I just felt better Q And then since that time you still continued to open up and be more honest with yourself and with others with this celebrity program that you A Right Doing Celebrity Fit Club was an amazing thing Just to go on TV and say you re fat is difficult And I was known as this perfect person So I felt naked when I was on this TV show But feeling naked was actually wonderful I felt like I didn t have to hide anymore Like I could just be me And that brought out the fact that I wanted to write a book that I wanted to finally come out and tell my story because I had been hiding my whole life behind this smile And I just thought that it was time to tell the world Yes you know I have this problem too I have an illness And yes there s hope And you can get help At peace with Marcia Q You mentioned in terms of your early life as Marcia Brady that you pack ed away your memorabilia and all of that You mentioned towards the end of your book that you ve gotten more comfortable now with yourself but also the part of yourself is that history or that other person in a sense So I was wondering A We ve become one Q So I was wondering if that s really the case if it would be so hard to unpack some of the memorabilia if you re accepting that part of you more now A I m starting to accept it I m starting to accept who I am and what I am which is wonderful And it s strange but for years you know I didn t want to talk about Marcia Brady
