of debt losing 10 pounds or resolving buried emotional issues Everyone has problems and they are inevitable But if you have an introspective method you can make a realistic plan to fix your problems or get outside help he says Each optimal decision you make brings you one step closer to finding balance and reaching your potential The lower rungs on Maslow s hierarchy of needs are an important place to start he notes These basic needs are the foundations for a good life he says If you don t have physical health or financial security or self esteem the first priority should be planting the seeds for these to grow FEEDING THE SPIRIT When basic needs are regularly fulfilled and this is not something anyone should take for granted the quest for self actualization becomes a lifelong pursuit that takes many directions The human spirit longs to be creative rather than stagnant enjoy fresh experiences and avoid boredom use individual talents and abilities and not see them wasted be stretched and challenged experience aesthetic pleasure and delight contribute to making the world a better place Satisfying work ranks as one of the most important elements of individual happiness Dave Pollard however found his bliss only after he retired There s some irony in that since Pollard 63 is the author of Finding the Sweet Spot The Natural Entrepreneur s Guide to Responsible Sustainable Joyful Work The book encourages entrepreneurs to create companies that align with their goals skills and values and coaches them to identify their passions and choose worthy business goals and business partners Pollard learned his lessons the hard way He spent decades working 70 to 80 hour weeks as a small business advisor In retrospect he recognizes that his lifelong pattern of depression was triggered by on the job stress Retirement was the magic answer to everything All of my stress vanished he says I m no longer facing this oppressive feeling of not wanting to get up in the morning In fact his energy is entirely outward focused He blogs regularly on www howtosavetheworld ca and is deeply committed to implementing sustainable solutions He has his eye on the big picture I believe human optimization or self actualization is not ultimately about the individual he says We should ask how we can integrate these practices of systematic decision making introspection and goal setting into our schools relationships and public policies As Maslow believed if more of us are able to achieve self actualization we could elevate human culture to the next level of our evolution THE LIFE THAT YOU DESIRE Brian Johnson CEO of the optimal living website en theos has traced the yearning for meaning and purpose in our lives far far back in Western culture I spent two years reading classic philosophy texts and condensing them into cheat sheets says Johnson who offers lessons and symposiums designed to foster personal fulfillment What I found is that self actualization is a commonality in all of the literature and it s a fundamental human need from the ancient Greeks through the Middle Ages to now According to Johnson the 21st century has accelerated and amplified the challenges to living a noble virtuous life He believes that we need to shift our focus away from external validation the fame wealth and attractiveness that our culture and mass media prioritize Seeking these qualities doesn t actually lead to happiness he warns You are still psychologically unstable But if you focus on the internal drives of improving your own achievements your compassion for others and how you contribute to the world that is where true happiness lies and how you ll reach your optimum state of self actualization Kathy a Toronto based life coach and author couldn t agree more She points out that it s easy to get caught in the messages of mainstream society that harp on how we could achieve more look better and have more money I believe that is why we see depression and anxiety growing she reflects We are bombarded with constant messaging of how we are not quite good enough yet All of us are unique and different and diving into self exploration is how we will be happy and that often looks different from what others expect Kathy takes her cues from a more personal source Her bucket list For those unfamiliar with the term it s the buzzword for a wish list of experiences or achievements someone hopes to accomplish over the course of a lifetime When Kathy started the list in her 20s it leaned toward the adventurous She was inspired to go whitewater rafting in Costa Rica and Austria jump out of an airplane ride on a Harley motorcycle and try parasailing and scuba diving She also learned to dance the salsa and did humanitarian work in Kenya With time she has focused less on exotic destinations and extreme activities Now the list guides her in enriching the everyday with entries like dance in the rain indulge in dessert instead of dinner on her birthday and practice meditation regularly I started asking myself how can I merge this into my daily activities and make it a part of my lifestyle she explains Some of the items might seem little and insignificant compared to how I started out but when you add them to your life on a daily weekly or yearly basis it changes how you see your life You start to create daily habits that move you toward the life that you desire and deserve Sidebar How to climb Maslow s ladder Some tips via psychologist Abraham Maslow PhD for reaching your potential Be present When you fully engage and pay attention to your experiences you are better able to take advantage of opportunities as they arrive and make important connections between ideas people and places Long before the current buzz about mindfulness Maslow famously said The ability to be in the present moment is a

  • Terry Bradshaw: Quarterback Scramble | Esperanza - Hope To Cope
I had to tell the truth That was when you got engaged with the family therapist Can you talk a little bit about what that process was like TB Well the worst thing about therapy is that you have to open up and be honest If you want help you got to be honest I had done therapy sessions before They were so intense and so personal that I didn t really want to share my stuff And so I didn t I made stuff up But this time I had to tell the truth Why did you make stuff up TB I just didn t want anybody to know all of the things about me that I didn t want you to know basically I just didn t want to be your hero and then all of a sudden you know your hero has got flaws That had some thing to do with it I didn t want to tell anybody the bad things about me So being a celebrity sort of got in the way of your therapy TB I think so yeah You have to understand first of all I congratulate myself on saying I need help I tell people this all the time First of all you just got to look in the mirror and go Hey look I have some problems here I need some help And then you ve got to seek it out When you start you have to be brutally honest You have to be brutally honest It was not easy There was hardly ever a session that I didn t just break down because I just couldn t deal with it How did the therapist help you to get to that point TB I would say this and then he would be able to or she because I saw men and women they were able to analyze it from an angle that I never looked at I wasn t capable of seeing that The family counselors were especially good because they were really emotionally locked in with me Psychiatrists I found to be a little bit more separated from me very analytical You couldn t connect quite as well with them TB No I connected From their standpoint I connected But I didn t want to hug them I hugged my preacher and my family counselor I will say this Because I was going to an expert and I respected that expert I didn t want a hug I wanted some answers And I got them It was different TB Exactly Both important but both difficult TB Oh very important I tell everybody today Listen just because you re feeling good and everything else don t lose track of your counseling time What role did your religious faith have in helping you with this process TB My Baptist faith was the only thing I could turn to when I was by myself When my friends weren t around When I wasn t in a crowd When I wasn t playing football performing and hurting then it was my faith What role did medication play in helping you TB The depression medicine the minute I was diagnosed I begged for a shot I said You got this in a shot Can I have a shot Because that s how bad you hurt All the anxiety attacks and the pain and I just wanted relief I needed relief I was hurting so badly And then you know just the emotional wear and tear on you I lost 43 pounds The medicine saved my life Saved my life Besides reaching out for the Lord who else do you reach out to or do you feel you just got to suck it up TB I have no one The players that I played with they laughed at it They made fun of it When I told my mom and dad what I was doing I m going to travel the country I m going to be talking about depression they just looked at me I think as parents they were thinking Oh my God where have we failed Because it s such a stranger to my family I got a dog Every time I go through a crisis it seems like I get another dog They listen very well TB Oh do they I really don t have anybody I really don t call anybody I sit and I work it out I walk I work out I don t think that s a good idea You need somebody else TB Of course it s not a good idea I m not stupid I know it s not a good idea But it was a good idea to go to a doctor and it was a good idea to do several years of therapy And it was a good idea to go on medicine Now you have contact with lots of people in your work When you see somebody that you think is hurting what do you do Do you reach out to them TB I don t reach out to anybody People come to me I have never had a woman yet come up and say Thank you for your book Thank you for your interview I saw I m dealing with depression And thanks for sharing it and being strong about it so on and so forth But I have had men and it s at the grocery store Honest to goodness They ll shuffle over to me fidgeting in the aisle and go Hey man I read your book I got depression too Appreciate all you re doing for us now And then they ll leave and go away We got a bunch of people out here who are all dealing with a lot of issues and don t know what it is to hear that it s okay It s okay It s no sign of weakness It s a sign

  • Keith O'Neil: Game plan | Esperanza - Hope To Cope
at the University at Buffalo s School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and an expert in the field of pharmaceutical treatments for bipolar By that point O Neil had gone through an extreme manic episode marked by paranoia and hallucinations received a bipolar diagnosis and endured a severe depression that lingered for 18 months After declining an opportunity to play with the New York Giants O Neil had returned to Buffalo with his wife Jill and started a new career in medical device sales Then his wife had a miscarriage Sadness over the loss shifted to euphoria and hyper motivation That gave way to a spending spree totaling 25 000 over a few days Then he segued into paranoid delusions Awful as the situation was it did have a somewhat positive outcome It forced O Neil to seek professional help The medication he was prescribed calmed the psychotic symptoms but O Neil pitched to the other extreme The former name for bipolar disorder is manic depressive and I really think that s more accurate than bipolar I went from being manic into a depression and it was awful he says I slept all the time I was mentally in a cold dark sad place and no one could help me My wife quit her job to take care of me family and friends tried to understand but no one could really help In the midst of impenetrable darkness O Neil came across a memoir by Brian Head Welch guitarist for the heavy metal band Korn Titled Save Me From Myself it was about how Welch discovered his faith and overcame his addiction to methamphetamines I bought the book and read it cover to cover in two days In the book I found a passage from Scripture Matthew 11 28 Come to me all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest I started crying O Neil says When I read his book and especially that line of Scripture I thought If Brian Head Welch can get himself off methamphetamines and get well then I can get well too The birth of his son Connor in summer 2012 gave O Neil something positive to focus on and the critical motivation to somehow get better Connecting with Dubovsky was the final piece of the puzzle Finding the right medications along with my faith has made all the difference in the world he said Faith is absolutely my greatest source of strength and after that my family and especially my wife Jill PAY IT FORWARD Regular Bible study is now part of his wellness regimen along with near daily distance running and spending as much time as possible outdoors one of the reasons the family relocated to Arizona Not least O Neil is talking about his situation For years he didn t understand it then stigma compelled him to keep silent Now he is writing a memoir which he hopes will help further destigmatize bipolar and help society understand what people with the illness go through Having been helped along his journey by coaches doctors family and friends he feels driven to reach out to others who are in the same kind of pain he was once in An in demand motivational speaker he shares frank explanations of bipolar illness and recovery with his audiences A member of the consumer advisory council of the International Bipolar Foundation he was recently elected to the organization s board of directors He has also launched the 4th and Forever Foundation www keithoneil com foundation to raise awareness of and fund research into mental disorders The name refers to a football team s fourth and final chance to complete a 10 yard advance with the ball O Neil says people with bipolar may feel they have forever to go to get to recovery O Neil believes children as young as grade school need to be taught about mental illness so that they will be comfortable when they encounter it whether in themselves or someone they know Although winning the Super Bowl with the Colts was a peak experience he s set his eyes on a very different kind of goal post than in his playing days My mission is to educate people and help them to be accepting he says Sidebar Keith O Neil s tips Ask for help You can t solve everything yourself When you reach the point where you can t do it on your own reach out Never give up You may have problems that seem insurmountable but a solution lies somewhere and with persistence you will find it Build a support team Find people to serve as guides advisors and mentors Even if they don t know everything their presence will add to your sense of stability Give as well as get Treat your friends and family with love and kindness just as they do with you Look to your faith It s your most important source of sustenance and survival Sidebar On the roster Having bipolar certainly isn t a barrier to success in pro football Here are a few more role models Greg Montgomery When an injury in high school meant Montgomery couldn t play linebacker anymore he re created himself in a new position becoming a star punter with the Houston Oilers Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens When he got a bipolar diagnosis in his ninth season in the NFL Montgomery set about learning to handle this new challenge with the same spirit And from the beginning he discussed his illness in interviews In recent years he has become more active in outreach and advocacy Now 49 he is still on a spiritual journey As he said in his 2011 video Madness in the NFL I ll never stop growing Jordan Matechuk A long snapper with the Canadian Football League s BC Lions Vancouver Matechuk is a rare example of a player who openly manages bipolar and a pro career at the same time Matechuk 28
