down the computer involve another or trust in a support system simple is woefully demanding In this case despite my since birth love for the outdoors and past careers that even required sleeping in the dirt until this two day sojourn I hadn t been camping in six years Too many mood swings due to the stressors of weather travel physicality and other people forced me to give up something I find deeply meaningful I m a preacher s kid Although I do not assign myself to any specific religion I am deeply faithful How is faithful defined My preacher parent taught me regardless of any structured belief system that being faithful is to know that under any and all circumstances no matter what my life has meaning Humans ask What s it all about and spend hours contemplating their navels When you have bipolar depression can make living seem completely futile and mania can make existence seem overly evocative Concern about our belly buttons disappears when all we re trying to do is stand on our feet and then keep those feet on the ground Can t we just get the brownie points for doing that without getting all deep and stuff Nope As difficult as it may be if we want things to get better and have lasting stability we must have faith We need to have a sense of place and purpose of meaning to ourselves and others Only then can we move on to building dreams plans and futures In considering faith I concluded that if I wanted to ever return to camping and other things I found meaningful in my past I was going to have to make some emotionally scary decisions I have to resolve to allow people to like love and be proud of me Kind of hard but I accept that some folks do I concede that I mean something to them It is risky to put myself out there knowing all too well that pain and stigma can happen Flipside it feels good to let others know their lives mean something to me To me keeping the faith is literally putting my feet in the dirt standing up firmly planting myself in the ground Unless of course there are simple camping chores to tend to like refilling bowls with orange juice About the author taazaa Has 8 Articles LEAVE YOUR COMMENT Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked First Name or Nickname Do not use full name Email Message CURRENT ISSUE Recent Issues November 1 2015 2 07 pm Fall 2015 GLENNON DOYLE MELTON Truth warrior In her Momastery blog her popular speaking tours and her book Carry On Warrior Glennon Doyle Melton shows it s OK Read more August 1 2015 2 07 pm Summer 2015 LEE WOODRUFF STRESS TEST After a family crisis left Lee Woodruff with symptoms of depression and anxiety she found the courage to reach out for Read more May

negative thoughts to keep them under control She admits that moving beyond such will sapping beliefs does take some willpower Own the illness Understand it and don t use it as an excuse she says Take responsibility for yourself because nobody else is going to do it That doesn t mean you can t benefit from a cheering section Bilsker recommends engaging friends and family members to coach and support you Give them a sense of the goals you re working on and ask them to encourage you he says Sometimes that encouragement can simply be helping you feel less low Holly Rodriguez 36 of Richmond Virginia has a reliable way to boost her mood enough to get moving I reach out to a friend whom I know will make me laugh says Rodriguez who was diagnosed with major depression in 1999 5 Praise don t punish Berating yourself when you don t reach your goals won t help you move forward Positive reinforcement will so be sure to recognize each success however small Don t shame yourself ask what s wrong with yourself or tell yourself that you are overweight or horrible says Bilsker To get out of the downward spiral of self punishment he advises consider whether you would ever say something that harsh or demeaning to a friend in the same situation By the same token give yourself the kind of encouragement and praise you would offer a friend who has done something worthwhile Stan Tolpen of Las Vegas 56 has a goal to walk at least a mile each day but he s kind to himself when he doesn t make it Some days I can t do it but every day I try I don t let it get me down when I can t do it says Tolpen who has lived with severe depression for 30 years When Tolpen feels he can t make the whole trip he ll at least walk up to his front gate and back then go inside and read a magazine or do something else that he enjoys as a reward for trying He reminds himself that tomorrow will be a new day and another opportunity to complete the whole walk Reminding himself that there is a chance to meet his goal tomorrow is enough to keep him going he says His favorite mantra sums it up perfectly With hope one can think one can work one can dream If you have hope you have everything Sidebar Turn off the TV That tempting TV screen is another motivation zapper Kathryn J Fraser MD an associate professor of psychiatry at University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque says studies suggest that planting yourself in front of the TV can actually worsen depression One study of adolescents published in the Archives of General Psychiatry in February 2009 found that the risk of developing depression as an adult rose significantly with each additional hour of television watching a correlation that

  • The Road to Recovery | Esperanza - Hope To Cope
medical and mental health care which made a huge difference in her recovery The biggest eye opener was discovering that I could control my health care choices and that I don t have to go down just one path says Jensen 60 who found that addressing various physical health conditions improved her mental health I am one of the many people who have discovered that attending to one s whole health is the key to mental health recovery she says What is success The holistic recovery model has already influenced policy and treatment in other countries including Canada Dennis Hildebrand program manager of consumer initiatives and vocational services at the Canadian Mental Health Association in Peterborough Ontario says that focusing more broadly on empowerment and less exclusively on symptom reduction expands the ways that people with mental illness can triumph When I began working on my recovery it was like going from a mere existence to living a full life where I have a reason to get up in the morning It s absolutely important to have measurable outcomes because there is a lot of value in what all those pieces of information can tell us he says But at the same time when you re looking at the mind body and spirit of a human being there are going to be moments of success that we can t always quantify When Lydia R of Maine was diagnosed with major depression in 1992 she was basically informed that normal life was out of reach I was told that I would always be ill that I would be in and out of the hospital all my life says Lydia 48 and for the first few years I believed it Lydia still can t say she s symptom free Thanks to an intuitive discovery of the holistic approach to recovery however she now has a paying job good friends a loving husband and a calling that keeps her going The patient is becoming recognized as the expert on themselves Generally it requires both personal and pharmaceutical approaches in collaboration for a person to truly recover and be well She was at a dual diagnosis group meeting when something just clicked She realized that true sobriety meant not just resisting the lure of alcohol but making more comprehensive changes in how she lived When I learned this I knew I could do the same thing with other problems in my life she recalls Propelled by her new found optimism and buttressed by medication and therapy Lydia found ways to move past her depression Formerly a personal care assistant for the elderly Lydia had gone on disability She started volunteering at the nonprofit Maine Mental Health Connections Inc in Bangor gradually assuming more responsibilities and taking on leadership roles In fact she helped found the Advocacy Initiative Network of Maine I could see that I was helping people and that made me feel better about myself she says By 2000 Lydia had a job at the Advocacy Initiative answering phones 10 hours a week She built up her skills and her work hours graduated from disability and ultimately got promoted to administrative assistant In the meantime she began seeking out companionship striking up conversations at yard sales and other random places that often led to an exchange of phone numbers Defying the dire predictions after her diagnosis Lydia got married in 2002 adding a new level of stability support and happiness to her life While Lydia still deals with depressive symptoms especially persistent insomnia focusing on the big picture fuels her mental health When the symptoms ran my life and that was all I was working on I was not happy When I began working on my recovery it was so much more satisfying and purposeful Lydia says I felt that I was so much more than my illness and could really make a difference in my community It was like going from a mere existence to living a full life where I have a reason to get up in the morning A whole new life A similar sense of purpose brought Allen Doederlein to DBSA after a career in development for nonprofit arts organizations in the Chicago area He saw the move as a way to give back to others who don t have the benefits including regular employment health insurance and supportive family and friends that helped him emerge in 2007 from a four year depression when he did little but work and sleep Doederlein admits that the stress of his executive position can cause depressive symptoms such as hopelessness self isolation lack of motivation and disturbed sleep to flare up The winter months tend to be difficult as well despite a management plan that includes medication and therapy regular exercise a healthy diet a social network and a supportive partner Doederlein notes that it took commitment hard work and many months to climb out of his black despair It s definitely a process and I m still having revelations says Doederlein But once you figure out that you have the tools and the power within yourself to affect your mood and your sense of well being that s when you discover that this journey is not just about recovery It s about a whole new life SIDEBAR Four part harmony The whole life model of recovery adopted recently by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration SAMHSA after a yearlong process involving a wide range of partners identifies four major areas that contribute to wellness Health overcoming or managing one s disease s as well as living in a physically and emotionally healthy way Home a stable and safe place to live Purpose meaningful daily activities a job school volunteerism family caretaking creative endeavors as well as the independence income and resources to participate in society Community relationships and social networks that provide support friendship love and hope In this model of recovery the individual with mental illness takes the
