    Milstone Being mindful helps you recognize what is happening inside and what you re trying to escape from That may involve looking at the bigger picture of what troubles you whether that s things that happened in your past or something in the current state of affairs The biggest thing I push is to help people identify issues that need to be dealt with childhood issues that they haven t dealt with or lives that are out of control says Ross As you come to terms with the powerful emotions that you re trying to numb you ll be able to feed yourself with compassion not fries or chocolate bars For Wayne that meant learning how to move past trauma from his youth and let go of his anger toward his tormentors The biggest turning point was that I had to learn to love myself says Wayne I found inner peace and forgave all the people who had treated me so badly and I felt better 2 Tap into hunger Emotional eating patterns often short circuit the body s natural sense of hunger and satiation One solution intuitive eating That means paying close attention to your physical sensations so that you re eating only when you re physically hungry and not eating when you re not By tuning in to your body you also learn to put down the fork or the bag of chips when you re full says Resch Ideally over time you will default to a more healthful diet as you come to recognize how different foods affect you Before I reach for something bad to calm my nerves I look at the situation and think about what is eating going to get me Intuitive eating is the ability to trust your body to tell you when you re hungry and when you re full and which foods feel good and comfortable in your body says Resch Intuitive eating means you honor the signals your body gives you It s inside out instead of outside in It also means that when you re not hungry and you want to eat you ask yourself what you really need Maybe it s soothing yourself with reassuring words instead of what s in your refrigerator Maybe it s talking to a sympathetic soul or journaling about what s going on Maybe it s turning on a good comedy show as a way to lift your spirits Unless you re physically hungry food will not fill that void Before I reach for something bad to calm my nerves I ve learned I can find a peaceful spot sit back and breathe and look at the situation and think about what is eating going to get me says Wayne If I m reaching for the extra pieces of pizza in the fridge and I m not hungry I won t get anywhere 3 Distract yourself When you are tempted to eat it helps to find a way to keep your mind off your cravings This is especially useful when food becomes a form of entertainment to stave off boredom For example Nadia paints and pursues other crafts to keep herself engaged Physical activity can be an effective distraction a walk around the block instead of into the kitchen for example Plus regular exercise boosts mood and lessens symptoms of depression and anxiety Kelly sees benefits from her walking routine She also uses deep breathing and visualization techniques when she s feeling anxious which helps her to not reach for the chocolate A distraction won t address your underlying emotional issues but it can keep you from using food as a stopgap 4 Find other joys The urge to use food to make yourself feel better may lessen if you add more pleasure of other kinds to your life Start a list of activities that make you happy and give you satisfaction then look for ways to incorporate them into your routine It can be as simple as a relaxing stroll in the park or spending time with someone whose company you enjoy The first step is identifying when the stress or emotion is starting Doing things that leave a positive afterglow will help you modulate your mood overall and make you less likely to turn to food when you re not truly hungry 5 Eat right Foods we turn to for comfort tend to be high in carbohydrates and the unholy trinity of poor diet saturated fats salt and sugar Apparently our brains are wired to desire foods loaded with fat and calories because those foods were most efficient at keeping our ancestors alive during times when food was scarce which is rarely the case nowadays Yet according to Resch eating well is especially important when taking psychiatric medications For medications to work well you need the precursors for making the neurotransmitter receptors she says Eating balanced meals regularly will help the medications work better We all know the drill Aim for a diet that contains lean protein whole grains healthy fat and a variety of fruits and vegetables Furthermore the connection between a nutrient rich diet and better mental and physical health is strongly established as is the association between junk food and depression The     I believe and I really would love to explain every thing she has done with all her heart and given up for our family she is truly a VERY SPECIAL PERSON Please let me tell you about her and maybe we could make her next birthdy very special Lynda August 14 2014 I noticed the attitude of some on Facebook is true sadness and disbelief Only 2 people l knew bashed people for what l call coming together over sadness about Robin Yes other things are going on in the world But this shocked so many people One person from UK said it was unbelievable that we were carrying on as we have been The other person said Robin had money He was just famous Last he had money to be fixed and didn t do it I tried to explain there is no fix l am sure everyone would buy the fix She was just mouthing off how dare people focus on someone like Robin while children are dying In my eyes separate I just said I am bp and they defriend me I tried to explain the horrors of depression She said good l don t want you part of my world Then defriended me having the last word But I had meaningful discussions close friends Lynda August 14 2014 Sorry did not comment on Howie s reaction It was a good article I can see that I also could have been helped earlier in my life I was 40 when I was on an Anti Depressant that sent me to the hospital I am a Graphic Artist and was given a true Drop Dead Deadline for putting together a handbook I did not believe my boss I thought he was kidding He wasn t I had heard he was good to work with fair etc I always had made my deadlines but I was starting to shut down I would get to work and so many days would have an instant panic attack at my light table My husband at the time would take me home My conflict was I had time off for Christmas so while off I went into my own little world Eventually not being able to talk Music broke me out of the state l was in I started singing the words to a song Soon l went into a Mental Hospital for the first time l am retired what it s like to grow up with a mentally ill parent You grow up being verbally and mentally abused by them Through the years I became withdrawn and isolated I would tell my mother I wasn t feeling well and then she would suggest that I go to bed and take an aspirin I was becoming more and more mentally ill as my life went on Since I always took the advice of my mother on how to cure my sickness I went on with my life thinking that I was ok I eventually moved out of my mother s house and tried living on my own That turned out to be a disaster My life was in shambles and I ended up going back to live with my mother I tried to commit suicide three times while I was there After the third try I was admitted to a psychiatric facility I was diagnosed with severe depression schizophrenia and OCD With the help of psychotherapy and medication I was able to lose the schizophrenia and the severe depression The OCD left when the other two illnesses disappeared To this day my mother has not acknowledged or understand the severity of my illness She s has never acknowledged her own sickness That s my life I guess you can t choose your parents Anto November 22 2015 im really sick of the Health is so stigmatized People do not know about much of any of it nor take the time to educate themselves even when someone they love struggles It is almost worse than a physical problem because many people will not take you seriously I have ADHD and General Anxiety Disorder I have had to learn so much about these disorders just recently as no one educated me nor did I receive counseling for these when entering high school Only now ten years later do I feel fully informed Unfortunately I went off medication because I was doing so well in graduate school so thought I did not need meds anymore for ADHD Also went of the meds for Anxiety because I had thought that with not taking the adrenal it was not necessary anymore supposed to take the edge off adderal One year into my marriage I am headed for divorce I did not know ADHD is also a behavioral disorder nor do I think 90 of people know If you have ADHD please read Melissa Orlov books If I had only read these books to learn about how ADHD affects relationships If I knew this I would have never went off medication Also in learning for about GAD I realize that a big reason I probably was diagnosed with this is that my father died before me turning 4 Those who encounter this are more likely to be diagnosed due to early trauma and blaming themselves for why that person went away they do not understand the concept of death at that point in life I should have never gone off medication but the psychologist did not do a good job at explaining these diagnosis to me Looking back at my marital problems it was a lot due to that I would constantly be in protection mode of myself It did not help that as a child my mother had been through three divorces by the time I was 18 and never got counseling for me I had a hard time opening up and relaxing even when things were going well in my marriage I always felt on edge as if something bad was about to happen Of course there was a lot of jelousy as well again to protect myself from danger and to feel that this was beneficial to me If we got in confrontations I would say hurtful things but passively such as why don t you move out or divorce me of course I cried after saying them and apologized and did not mean these things I had just bought our home and we got a dog two months before separating This was just due to me feeling vulnerable and nervous due to past experiences I am a counselor myself so believe in counseling unfortunately my husband will not go with me He got his own counselor who is from Europe like him and she is supposedly saying I took advantage of his emotions because he needed a green card This is far from the truth My husband and I met in the U S while he was here on a work visa and at any point I was also aware he could continue on a work visa In addition she has told him I have Borderline Personality Disorder which is not true I have my own set of healthcare professionals and they are astonished someone who does not even know me has made such accusations So of course he believes her How would I be allowed to volunteer for the court system and be a school counselor if I had borderline not that it couldn t happen however I have not been diagnosed with this and it is highly unlikely So America still needs good psychological professionals not all are out there making lives better He has filled for divorce He came from a unified home with his mother and father He says me educating him on ADHD and GAD makes him even more angry He says I have emotionally abused him and he will never forget it He feels I was hiding things from him I have read books the entire summer highlighting and sending them to him along with articles I have begged for forgiveness He says that he does not love me anymore and I am not the person he knew That I was being on my best behavior so he would marry me I was in no need to get married He says that I need to get things straight before being a mother He says that medication doesn t help people That people don t change and go back to what they did before because that is where they are comfortable Non the less he is being very non supportive and to me this seems very harmful in the choice of words His family only hears his side and of course believes in his perspective Although I was not on medication for four years before meeting him and thought I was doing fine But the key here is intimate relationships He is my first husband and the first man I have ever lived with We also got married only after one year of dating so it went very fast Which can also be stress Also too much change even when good can be stressful he doesn t see that He is unable to see things from my perspective He is moving away from our Florida home and moving all the way to California He tells me I am not in tune with reality He says I am ignorant and that he doesn t understand why I feel he is obligated to love me even though I have not said he is It has only been three and a half months of separation so of course I still am putting fourth effort in saving our marriage He has only put me down since me being back on medication which is the first time being on medication in our relationship I even took an anger management class although it was not really necessary He wants nothing to do with me So now being 28 I have experienced a total of 4 divorces between my mother and myself To say the least I never want to get married again I am very much a commitment person but cannot handle

    to keep his symptoms in check Although his rational mind understands that contact with everyday germs won t truly harm him he travels with a black light in order to locate and neutralize microbes in hotel rooms I really believe that everyone out there could benefit from therapy whether they are dealing with relationship or job issues or stress or depression OCD leaves Mandel feeling he has no control over his surroundings or his own mind He talks about going back to his house 30 times to check that he locked the door and intrusive irrational thoughts that ratchet up his anxiety levels It can be hard to shut off the what ifs and my feelings of constant fear In his book he points out that most people know what it s like to have a little anxiety in their lives to feel nervous or worried But there have been times through my life where my anxiety has been paralyzing and that s where the coping skills I learned in therapy have helped Help Wanted Mandel has been in talk therapy for over a decade exploring everything from traditional psychoanalysis to cognitive therapy He s also pursued psychopharmacotherapy options experimenting with different medications to see what best controls his symptoms If the first thing doesn t work there is another alternative and if that doesn t work there is another Mandel says People should know there are ways to make their life better They don t have to be ashamed or suffer in silence While he hopes that speaking out about his experiences will encourage others to seek help he avoids discussing specifics of his treatment plan because there s no one answer for every person Even treatments that worked for him in the past need to be re evaluated when they re no longer effective Managing your symptoms is a lifelong commitment and you need to have open communication with your doctor to let them know how you re feeling what s working and what s not he notes Although Mandel has admitted he waited until his 40s to get professional help he d finally reached a point where his symptoms were so debilitating he couldn t manage anymore he s become a strong proponent of psychotherapy and medication as needed I really believe that everyone out there could benefit from therapy whether they are dealing with relationship or job issues or stress or depression he says It s been true for his own family Things that other parents take for granted sitting down to play quietly after dinner or taking their kids into a public rest room have been hard for Mandel He calls his wife a saint for sticking with him and supporting him My wife and three kids have had to cope through the years with my idiosyncrasies Mandel told USA Today All of us have gone through therapy Outspoken Mandel shares such information freely these days But it wasn t until the late 1990s when
