  • Resiliency & You: Bounce Back | Esperanza - Hope To Cope
it before it causes me to slip backwards Find your funny bone Growing up in Illinois Dave was always known as the funny kid Whether to keep classmates from picking on him back then cope with his ongoing depression and generalized anxiety disorder or adjust to recent health challenges a sense of humor has been the backbone of Dave s capacity for resilience Dave had finally emerged from a six month depressive episode in 2013 triggered by losing his job when he learned he has type 2 diabetes Suddenly he was on a strict diet and having to check his blood sugar eight times a day Dave did what he has always done with serious situations He made fun of it Self deprecating humor has always been a way for me to go says Dave who lives in Minnesota The more I do it the more control I feel I guess I do sort of bully my diseases to make me feel better but it works If I make other people smile then everything else is probably going to be OK Now I can look at something and see that it s not my fault Scott a licensed clinical professional counselor in Baltimore Maryland admits to being irreverent with clients if he is sure they can handle it Horrible things happen but you don t have to be completely serious all the time he explains I think it gives some distance from whatever is really distressing them Sometimes you just have to laugh at the unbelievable He speaks from experience In 2013 Scott had open heart surgery only to land in the hospital seven months later on the first day at a new job with a ruptured appendix Rather than getting bogged down with the God why me question I tried to laugh about the fact that the situation was so absolutely crazy Some of this is about accepting life for what it is unpredictable We re taught to look for justice and fairness but that s not always the way the world works he continues The randomness of it all is probably the most distressing But if you can accept that there will be ups and downs you can move on from there In so many words Scott is summarizing the Serenity Prayer God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference As he puts it People can get into trouble when they try to make things predictable again We do have choices to make but only over things we have control over Look for opportunities Any actions that help you feel less passive less of a victim will put you in a stronger position to deal with difficulties That includes taking creative steps such as self expression and outreach to seize back some power from depression and anxiety Being able to share my story and let others know they are not alone
