of people that deal with chronic debilitating diseases He spoke of how our amazing brains can be retrained even become new Neuropathic highways that have developed over many years can be changed with persistent personal efforts to eliminate negative self talk and anger towards others Further neurons that illnesses have destroyed can become functional again by learning new ways to think He spoke of how important faith and hope in the future are in these processes I was extremely fortunate that Dr Harrison was one of my therapists He helped me change my life for the better through helping me retrain my brain Despite my many one on one talks with him his presentation to the group helped me understand better his strategy in helping me He aided me in understanding my dysfunctional neuropathic highways that resulted from painful experiences in my youth As I look back I see that his session embodied the approach that he explained to the group His presentation helped me better understand the importance of a positive approach as we seek to heal to be in recovery The second psychologist is Lundy Bancroft I ve been listening to his audio book Why Does He Do That Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men A good friend of mine is going through a difficult divorce from a controlling and abusive man I thought this book might assist me to better understand her plight so I can be supportive and helpful to her The book speaks of the myth that spousal abuse is the result of mental illness He says it is not Rather it comes from flawed values and attitudes including erroneous feelings of entitlement These usually are learned from male role models early in life So those that have these problem values and attitudes
