In Denmark which has free health care for its citizens the first suicide prevention clinics were opened in 1992 for people at risk of suicide but not in need of psychiatric hospitalization The clinics were opened nationwide in 2007 For the multi center study the researchers analyzed Danish health data from more than 65 000 people in Denmark who attempted suicide between Jan 1 1992 and Dec 31 2010 Of that group they looked at 5 678 people who received psychosocial therapy at one of eight suicide prevention clinics The researchers then compared their outcomes over time with 17 304 people who had attempted suicide and looked similar on 31 factors but had not gone for treatment afterward Participants were followed for up to 20 years The researchers found that during the first year those who received therapy were 27 percent less likely to attempt suicide again and 38 percent less likely to die of any cause After five years there were 26 percent fewer suicides in the group that had been treated following their attempt After 10 years the suicide rate for those who had therapy was 229 per 100 000 compared to 314 per 100 000 in the group that did not get the treatment The therapy itself varied depending on the individual needs of the patient so the researchers can t say exactly what the active ingredient was that inoculated many against future suicide attempts While it is possible that it was simply the provision of a safe confidential place to talk the researchers say they plan to gather more data on which specific types of therapy may have worked better than others Study co author Elizabeth A Stuart PhD an associate professor in the Bloomberg School s Department of Mental Health says that before this it

  • A New Test Measures Analytical Thinking Linked to Depression, Fueling the Idea That Depression May Be a Form of Adaptation | Esperanza - Hope To Cope
the house because my car may breakdown or something might happen to me I have an 8 year old son and I am 54 years old and my wife works so I am home with him and have to get him ready for school do homework and I can t handle the responsibility I don t leave the house in fear something may happen and I will not be here for the bus My wife is ready to leave because I am such mess my son has ADHD and it s hard for him to focus on anything I had many appointments with psychiatrist s but became petrified of meds because I tried them before and all I thought about was suicide it got so bad all I wanted to do is sleep I was convinced I would either die or be in a hospital because I was in such bad shape I could not leave my house I had developed agoraphobia I slept all day everyday and hated to wake up I wanted my like back I feel like a failure and I can t do anything about it I felt as if i hit rock bottom and the only place lower was 6 feet under but I hung on and started to listen to bible verses and hear about people being born again so I prayed and nothing seemed to happen not yet anyway I kept listening to motivational speeches by preachers Tony Robbins anyone that would get my mind off of myself I slowly began to tolerate myself and after a period of time I started to like myself a little bit I carried so much guilt and shame for things I did in the past and my walls were so high they were preventing me from knowing who i was and what my purpose in life was I literally had to relearn how to feel how to trust express emotion without being judged and more importantly how to love and forgive I have no fear no anger I write poetry now where before I could not even write my name I cry at movies and do not care what people think Slowly I was able to learn to feel all over again The learning and feelings were rapidly expanding and I would literally feel brain zaps then one night at 3 00AM it all came together and I was jumping for joy and felt like I was in a state of bliss My Journey of Depression Adaptation Ascension had completed Depression is not because your daddy did not hug you or you did too many drugs or alcohol Now this is new research on Depression as a form of Adaption to prepare you for the next phase of your life but now it s 10 times better because I have no filters on my emotions and I literally get emotional with everything and it feels awesome and I feel alive I used to think at 56

  • A New Test Measures Analytical Thinking Linked to Depression, Fueling the Idea That Depression May Be a Form of Adaptation | Esperanza - Hope To Cope
We are asking whether it may actually be a natural adaptation that the brain uses to tackle certain problems We are seeing more evidence that depression can be a necessary and beneficial adaptation to dealing with major complex issues that defy easy understanding The researches emphasize that clinical depression remains a serious mental health concern and that understanding the underlying mechanisms at play can lead to more effective treatment There is currently no consensus on the underlying pathology of depressive disorders and the symptoms used for diagnosis occur on a spectrum that ranges from mild to severe The researchers administered their test to nearly 600 subjects Their paper Measuring the bright side of being blue appears in the peer reviewed open access journal PLOS ONE The test revealed which subjects were experiencing analytical rumination at varying levels of intensity and found a relationship between those results and subjects who were experiencing depressive symptoms The research suggests that depression may be a natural condition in which the mind concentrates involuntarily on a complex issue to the point where it allocates resources to analyzing the problem at hand diminishing concentration on other aspects of living perhaps giving rise to disrupted eating sleeping and social interaction that are associated with depression Being able to measure analytical rumination is a step toward developing new and possibly more productive ways of reducing the harmful effects of depression the researchers say We have a set of items that clinicians and researchers can use to understand how people with depression are thinking says Skye Barbic a post doctoral research fellow at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Based on how people answer our questions we can tailor appropriate levels of care and supports This set of questions can also inform completely different discussions between the clinician
