    a great tool to use at the beginning of each New year however it is also a valuable one to use everyday I believe it can truly be one of the most powerful ways to make positive changes in our lives 1 Now I ll be honest when I first teach this LifeTOOL in my groups and live workshops people can have a hard time at first I will usually get several people who will raise their hand ask questions like Aren t we supposed to stop focusing on the past Didn t you tell us last week not to focus on the past now you re telling us to So let me clarify There is a difference between getting lost in the past as I find many people can tend to do and reflecting on the past One of the critical differences is EMOTIONS If you find yourself starting to feel a certain way angry hurt sad or even happy then you re RE EXPERIENCING the past event It s like IN a movie of the past RE EXAMINING the past for lessons is like taking a snapshot or picture of the past looking at that picture to see

    memories of seeing the play my all time favorite on Broadway in London and in my hometown of Salt Lake City I can t seem to get enough of it The melodious music combined with the uplifting story have lifted me many times Oh the nostalgia the beauty When I get caught up in all this my worries and cares seem miles away This experience reminds me of how key listening to good music is to lowering my level of constant nervousness that comes from my generalized anxiety disorder As I composed this missive I did what every red blooded American would do a Google search on the impact of music on anxiety I found that scientific studies have found that music reduces anxiety in patients waiting on a gurney for surgery I suppose it s easier to develop a study of subjects in a controlled environment for that kind of thing I found no such studies on people like me with chronic anxiety There does seem to be significant anecdotal evidence however Here s a sample of testimonials from my search I believe that music helps your mind to be free You can relate to the words of that song at that moment or just listen to the beat Listening to some artists and their words lets you know that you are not the only one in pain It s not a cure but can soothe you for a moment 1 I have struggled with mental illness all my life Music has been medicine for my emotions soul and body 2 Evidence from the Nordic Journal of Music Therapy and the Journal of Clinical Nursing suggests that music can help improve mental health by reducing certain symptoms of depression and by making people feel more in control It can
