know that when I am not depressed the symptoms are much much better I have been to many specialists and counselors and no one really has an answer for me I still have a lot of aches and pains when my mental illness is not in remission Name Withheld Tigard OR My depression intertwines with anxiety Together they have caused me migraines stomachaches painful joints and an all over heaviness that makes me loath to do anything Most recently I have had a terrible time sleeping Doctors keep offering more pills which don t help SFL South Beach OR William Styron wrote Mysteriously and in ways that are totally remote from natural experience the gray drizzle of horror induced by depression takes on the quality of physical pain That sums up how I feel when depression takes hold My joints ache my back hurts the arthritis in my hands worsens My psychiatrist put me on an antidepressant that is supposed to help with physical pain but when I m down in the bottom of the pit there is little that helps me ease the pain enough to crawl out JHC Jackson MI I have had varying levels of depression since I was a teenager I have been in treatment for about 20 years I have since found out that I have chronic Lyme disease and have also been diagnosed with fibromyalgia This is in addition to having chronic migraines I believe that depression exacerbates the physical symptoms I experience When I am experiencing heightened anxiety it is likely I will have a migraine that day Depression makes it very difficult to follow through with the recommendations given by medical professionals such as exercise I just want to lie on the couch I often just cry about my condition and feel that there is no hope S Frederick MD I always felt like I was getting the flu I was achy my joints hurt I would be tired sorry not tired fatigued I could sleep 18 hours and wake up tired and thinking about when I could have a nap I felt like I was in a fog After years I started to recover I now have a good doctor I am on medication and working through stuff My future is looking better DL Toronto ON TO READ MORE Click here to buy one or more copies of the Fall 2010 issue Click here to subscribe to esperanza TELL US WHAT YOU THINK Click here to send a letter to our editor about this article or the magazine in general Tagged with and how have health care practitioners responded but also the body How does depression affect you physically Depression affects not only moods and thoughts About the author esperanza Has 732 Articles LEAVE YOUR COMMENT Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked First Name or Nickname Do not use full name Email Message Book Categories All Books Anxiety Depression Children For Loved Ones Living

  • SOUNDOFF! Depression in the Workplace | Esperanza - Hope To Cope
of constant complaints It was assumed that it was my fault since I had depression following a work related severe injury I no longer work for the company and I hear the supervisor is having the same problems with the same customers My frustration was the lack of support by my management staff C D Miles NC I say yes to letting your boss know about these issues I am a person with depression and I find no shame in it I don t consider myself weak due to my mood disorder Just as a person with asthma would I take my medication to keep my symptoms under control And yes my boss knows A Winnipeg Manitoba I chose to tell my boss It was the best decision I made in that I have everyone s support when I go through rough patches I have had to be hospitalized and on short term disability a few times I m fortunate to have the best coworkers and management They have been great about it and I don t need to feel bad about telling them that I may be having a hard day They support me through recovery and tailor my workload accordingly I told them because I did not want to appear unproductive and I do not regret that decision in the least J E Burlington Ontario I don t think I ve come out and said Hey guys I m dealing with the challenges of depression and anxiety But I refer to it in a matter of fact way At a staff discussion I shared an example in which my anxiety and depression played a very significant part and it was as if I had said You know last winter when I had that broken leg I work in a church and my coworkers are very supportive That doesn t mean they always get mental illness but I figure the more I treat it matter of factly the more it will normalize it for everyone else R Cincinnati OH I experienced two major depressions between 2005 and 2008 Each time I took four weeks off to recover using family medical leave I told my supervisor about my illness and received support and encouragement I believe my openness will help others who are suffering similarly If I had not shared this information I would have struggled alone and I likely would have been fired since it s hard for me to concentrate while I m ill Since I had a sterling reputation at my workplace no one thought I was making things up or using my illness as an excuse J D Omaha N E Tagged with Readers respond to the question Should you tell your boss that you are affected by anxiety and depression About the author esperanza Has 732 Articles LEAVE YOUR COMMENT Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked First Name or Nickname Do not use full name Email Message Book

ll know what to do when you re sidelined Don t withdraw It s not uncommon to want to withdraw from others but isolating yourself can interfere with healing Connecting to others will help you get back on track so make sure you don t spend too much time alone Call in the cavalry Reach for support when triggers hit so you can minimize the onset of depressive symptoms or keep them from getting worse if they are already present Don t hesitate to turn to a trusted friend or family member Also important here is to make your triggers known not only to yourself but aloud to others Insist that people in your life honor and respect them Establish a daily routine Have a regular schedule for waking sleeping eating and exercising and for relaxing and refueling too When a trigger unleashes an emotional flood you can grab onto the predictability of your schedule to help you stay afloat until you re back on solid ground Tagged with Depression relapse Symptoms triggers About the author Deborah Serani PsyD Has 5 Articles Deborah Serani PsyD is a licensed psychologist who specializes in treating depression and trauma She also manages her own depression which was diagnosed in 1980 Her new book is titled Living with Depression Why Biology and Biography Matter Along the Path to Hope and Healing 1 COMMENT Erika November 22 2015 Reply This is really upiitflng sigh I dont like that I have this problem and I try to keep things in perspective because I know the world doesn t revovle around myself but at times I just get the feeling that everyone is looking at me and judging me for my every mistake it makes it hard to even interact with people without being even in the least anxious This is upiitflng though and I will def turn my problems to the Lord because at this point he is the only one that can help me Thanks for the post and your helping people like us by just talking about your situations and giving us all courage LEAVE YOUR COMMENT Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked First Name or Nickname Do not use full name Email Message RELATED ARTICLES Managing Depression and Living Well February 10 2016 11 01 am Through Veterans own voices Veterans have the chance to hear from trusted and credible sources other Veterans like themselves In this video hear Veterans share their Appreciating the Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma Experienced by Therapists February 2 2016 12 35 am The long row of 80 motorcycle police officers in a two wide formation was followed by a black hearse and a black limousine We passed them Douglas M Duncan The Politician s Courageous Depression Disclosure February 1 2016 2 52 pm In his 24 year career in public office including three terms as the top elected official in Maryland s most populous county DOUGLAS M DUNCAN became a
