in extreme pain He was hospitalized for a few days Even with multiple doses of anti venom he almost lost his finger I ve encountered rattlers a dozen or so times while hiking in the Wasatch Mountains In every case they ve stayed where there were or quickly slithered away when I passed About a year ago while visiting our daughter and her family in Colorado I met a man who actually loves rattlesnakes In fact he s licensed to keep a warehouse of 75 of them He extracts their venom and sells it for research and medicinal purposes It s used to treat blood disorders brain injuries heart attacks strokes and other physical maladies One weekend he was unable to get food for one of the snakes that he knew would only eat birds He was concerned and frustrated While driving his vehicle a small bird flew into the windshield and bounced off dead onto the ground He picked it up and took it to his snake He is a religious man and credited this little miracle as an answer to his prayers He prayed for his beloved rattlesnakes I don t love them but I now do appreciate them My journey of how I look at mental illness has similarities My two major depressive episodes with catatonic features when I was 18 left me bewildered and scared They seemed to come out of nowhere My doctor told me little about what had happened to me other than it was a temporary chemical imbalance I was afraid to know more and didn t ask For years I feared that another episode would suddenly strike again I was full of ignorance and fear But over the years I ve studied depression I better understand what happened to me My challenges
