    resilience and enjoy positive experiences may be compromised increasing the risk of developing a clinical depression Chronic illnesses are also associated with the production of inflammatory cytokines chemical messengers of our immune system Abnormal levels of these cytokines are associated with brain changes that may underlie some depressions It s also worth noting that some medications used to treat chronic conditions including steroids and certain blood pressure medications to name just a couple can cause or worsen depressive symptoms Does treating depression help medical conditions like diabetes or heart disease Again the answer seems to be yes Addressing major depression significantly improves the outcomes of many chronic diseases Many of the physical symptoms of major depression changes in appetite sleep disturbances low energy overlap with symptoms of medical illnesses Sometimes it can be difficult to know which illness is causing what symptoms Fortunately it turns out that what s good for the body is also good for the brain Exercise diet and relaxation are all key components to maintaining both physical and emotional health 2 There are two broad ways that better mood may correspond with better health First and foremost the low energy apathy and social withdrawal that accompany depression can hinder your ability to take good care of yourself With less depression you are more likely to exercise eat a healthy diet take medications correctly and attend medical appointments All of these behaviors can prevent or improve complications from conditions such as diabetes and heart disease It s also possible that some of the medications for depression may themselves have direct positive effects throughout your body not just in your brain Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors SSRIs for instance have subtle anti inflammatory and anti coagulant effects in the blood leading some researchers to believe that these medications can
