the first place It became about being super productive being successful earning more money I let the situation get out of hand Isn t success a good thing We live in a workaholic culture where working 60 hours a week is weirdly the norm Even our kids look how absurdly competitive and demanding school is now There s been since the 1950s a linear rise in mental illnesses like anxiety and depression in children and a decline in freeform play for kids Now 45 percent of elementary schools have talked about taking away recess completely and many offer kids only 15 minutes of play This ripples out into all other aspects of our lives and goes all through adulthood Is work life balance actually possible in competitive fields It s really a choice to schedule stuff in your calendar to set aside time every day to do the things that actually matter to you If you don t sit down and set aside time for yourself during the week or the year it s not going to happen I work with a lot of people who have families and they still manage to do these things It s a matter of how in control of your time are you What would you flag as the warning signs of burnout Constantly worrying Difficulty breathing or relaxing or sleeping because of worry Living in fear thinking something bad is about to happen all the time Feeling out of control or on the verge of tears There are physical symptoms too shallow breathing tension in the gut chest pains shaky hands rapid heartbeat These are the signs of a crushingly exhausted person What were the worst symptoms for you Definitely it was the panic attacks Those are really awful They were very scary because I wasn t sure how to handle them I was so ashamed and I tried to tough it out Also feeling dead inside all the time and trying everything to try to fix it and not knowing why I couldn t fix it Why do you think the usual approaches didn t work for you I was a workaholic Every time I wasn t working I felt bad about it I felt guilt I felt shame When I tried to do yoga and meditation it was very checklist I breathed for 20 minutes in a sitting position and I did that correctly Nothing worked because my mindset sucked the joy out of everything It was very Type A As soon as I changed my mindset it was like unlocking a prison door and realizing the key to opening it had been inside me the whole time You have embraced play as an antidote How is that possible for a Type A perfectionist I think it s possible for everybody You have to recognize that you were a kid once and you had free time where you could do anything you wanted What activities did you naturally turn to What
