and inspired I now knew there were things I could do to actively help myself It would take work and it would take time but I could learn to relate to my depressive experiences differently and eventually my brain would adopt healthier patterns I began to work with cognitive behavioral therapy CBT techniques and learned that dysfunctional thinking patterns could be contributing to my low moods I found if I examined my thoughts by writing them down I could notice common cognitive distortions like all or nothing thinking self criticism and perfectionism Those poor thinking habits were increasing my stress level and sometimes triggering depression I extended my depression fighting skill set by adding mindfulness techniques to my CBT arsenal The research said this was a very powerful approach and it was for me Mindfulness helped me to be much more relaxed accepting of life s imperfections and more aware of my thinking and how the distortions were getting me down I began by practicing every day on my own with guided meditation CDs then formed a Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy group to learn more I also started going to spinning classes using light therapy and better regulating my sleep It has been nearly a decade since my epiphany and my brain is working better Better yet I became passionate about using what I had learned in my own journey to help others who are struggling to recover My life now is not just free from the persistent grip of depression but meaningful in ways that I never imagined it could be Tagged with episodic depression Exercise Hope About the author esperanza Has 732 Articles LEAVE YOUR COMMENT Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked First Name or Nickname Do not use full name Email Message RELATED ARTICLES The Most Important Gift You Can Give Yourself December 24 2015 12 01 am There is a book which changed my life in such a profound way that I used to share it with my patients at the partial The Two Things We Can ALL Use October 1 2015 12 01 am I had the opportunity to attend the DBSA I to We conference in Chicago this past weekend as both a participant and a When Someone You Love Is Lost In The Illness May 7 2015 12 01 am Today s LifeTool is for GIVING HOPE I recently met a man whose story is like so many others This post is for him those people A Secret to Making Healthy Changes February 11 2015 12 01 am I did a new workshop this past weekend found myself pulling out so many of my old wonderful LifeTools I struggled picking which one CURRENT ISSUE Recent Issues November 1 2015 2 07 pm Fall 2015 GLENNON DOYLE MELTON Truth warrior In her Momastery blog her popular speaking tours and her book Carry On Warrior Glennon Doyle Melton shows it s OK Read more August 1 2015 2

they intended I would return from the mall laden with several bags filled with fashionable new clothes My mother and I after all had bonded over shopping trips Now I was overshopping because I yearned for another kind of life after the divorce I d gained weight after foot surgery and I wanted clothes that would make me look good and feel glamorous a pair of elegant but comfortable heels a pretty dress Yet never before had my spending habits caused me to miss my rent payment The pain of this realization felt like a punch to my gut After enrolling in a behavioral therapy group for shopping addicts I resolved to write down what I bought and how I was feeling at the time one of the techniques taught in the group It was one way to keep me honest about my spending When I read that journal over after several months it was shocking The stark record laid out how serious my buying addiction had become I also started seeing a therapist who helped me understand that it was easier for me to overspend and be depressed about it than to experience the grief surrounding my divorce At home I vented my feelings more fully in crying jags it was easier for me to overspend and be depressed about it than to experience The grief surrounding my divorce Slowly my shopping habit lessened The fruits remained I started sifting through my closet piling up shoes and clothes in grocery bags destined for Goodwill I waffled when I got to a pair of brown suede Mephisto heels worth 300 Then I thought about what it would be like for a young girl to walk into the thrift store and be able to afford beautiful shoes for the first time

would be like for a young girl to walk into the thrift store and be able to afford beautiful shoes for the first time Into the bag they went As I pulled myself together I landed a new job and moved to a nicer apartment Busy with work and finding my way around my neighborhood I no longer had as much time to shop I enrolled in a writing course which put me in touch with a community of other writers and kept me involved in a pastime more nurturing and less costly than online buying Eventually I realized that I had gone three months without purchasing a single thing online I d even left a Lands End gift card worth 35 lying on my kitchen table unused for weeks One evening I sat in my bedroom opened my laptop and perused the company s website I found a black and white skirt on sale for just 34 I chuckled over the price as I clicked the buy button then snicked my laptop shut without shopping any further When the skirt arrived it fit perfectly I wore it to work on a fine spring day I had designer skirts hanging in my closet that were much more expensive but that black and white skirt was just as pretty And as I climbed the stairs to my apartment that evening with the skirt swirling around my legs I felt a newfound sense of freedom Tagged with addictions shopping spotlight Summer 2014 About the author Barbara Boughton Has 1 Article Barbara Boughton is a technical writer and freelance medical writer She lives in San Francisco 1 COMMENT Jacquie September 17 2014 Reply I too spend to make me happy and it affect my monthly bill payments The problem is I can t return my purchases as I look forward to the joy of the receiver of the gift I have 4 grandkids under 3yrs and I love to buy for them it makes me feel like part of their lives I do go overboard and I don t think about my bills at the time of the purchase I get depressed when I try to budget my bills as the money is now gone but I just keep buying and buying I will even borrow to pay for my purchases Leave a Reply to Jacquie Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked First Name or Nickname Do not use full name Email Message RELATED ARTICLES Emotional Eating Food vs Feelings November 3 2014 2 00 am Eating to soothe emotions doesn t help in the long run Try these strategies By Kelly James Enger Wayne of Wisconsin learned to eat his Summer 2014 August 4 2014 9 16 am HOWIE MANDEL NO LAUGHING MATTER Comedian Howie Mandel wishes he d known more about his depression and anxiety disorders earlier in life He wants to make SoundOFF Resilience You August 4 2014 8 10 am The Question

I find myself getting upset or anxious I focus on those little things that I have control over I make a list of all of the things I can do to fix the problem or get through the problem And more importantly let go of those things I have no control over M M I WAS HOSPITALIZED six times in a six year span which shook my confidence and self worth to their cores My big break came when the right medicine and the right treatment program collided in 2010 I then managed to volunteer my way into a paid job which served as a stepping stone to further opportunities The key through this has been my faith I knew that God would eventually pull me out of my deep despair into greener pastures I thank him daily Name Withheld ATLANTA GA I NEVER KNEW how much resilience I had until I nearly died from surgical complications I used all my physical and mental health strengths possible Now when faced with any challenge I know I can handle it because I ve handled the very worst in the past P M VERMILION OH I VE LEARNED TO ADDRESS what I can and accept that I m not going to be able to fix everything Taking time to center myself and a little meditation to calm things down have been invaluable R D I HAVE BEEN COPING with my mood disorder for 21 years and I try to give myself credit for still being alive for fighting and not giving up I reached out for support from family and close friends I looked to knowledgeable and kind psychiatrists and therapists Along the way you gather tools to give you hope and let you enjoy the up times J H SAND SPRINGS OK QUIETLY WAITING FOR the challenge to pass Trying to keep doing what I enjoy to keep my spirits up Taking unnecessary chores and activities off my plate they ll still be there later I ask others to pray with or for me The social support heals my soul Enjoying the outdoors even if it means sitting by a window and watching the trees blow in the wind Remembering how God has brought me through rough patches and hoping to see a better day soon C C WACO TX RUGGLING WITH DEPRESSION for more than 20 years has made me realize that I am stronger and more resilient than I ever knew Paramount is the support of my family and friends Therapy sustains me when medications fail Art projects allow me express my feelings when words elude me I take comfort that I am descended from strong women who have battled adversity At times though sheer willpower and grit are all I have Name withheld ALEXANDRIA VA GET ORGANIZED Solicit help from family friends medical professionals support groups Make an action plan What am I going to do about this Make a list of positive negative consequences of taking action
