time I was fighting my demon inside my head to stop him from running the water because water is precious and it just goes down the drain My challenge is not only to shut up and to let him have his fun and his experiment thankfully he learned to turn off the faucet and to run the stream of water just a bit not at full stream but I want to install a greywater system so that the water that he plays with inside the house will go to good use I have it all planned out in my head but not sure when we can actualize it Water is a precious source for everyone and I want to do better to preserve it we killed our lawn with thick mulch and are planting either for us to eat or for bees to make honey while at the same time giving Sydney the room to enjoy and experiment We have a dryer but we decided to hang dry all our clothes This has worked wonderfully during the summer and our clothes dry faster than it would in the dryer I love it But this might be a challenge during the winter months when it s cold and humid Maybe we can still hang dry inside and the heater will dry out clothes We ll see how this will work But I know I would miss getting into the warm bed at night after the sheets have been freshly washed and dried I love the smell of holidays But this is a big problem for me Not because I like the smell but because I haven t used any synthetic scents on me or Sydney for years and my nose has become super sensitive to anything chemical When I go to stores and I smell the perfumed air from afar I can t stop thinking of all the chemicals that the employees and the store visitors inhale on a daily basis I wish I could stop thinking and start enjoying but I can t And at the same time I love the smells of the season when I pass by a pumpkin patch a christmas tree stand or a bakery How do I bring those scents into my home without chemicals I read on a few blogs that heating cinnamon and lemon rind in a small pot of water will do the trick But that s the only recipe I could find And then there is the guilt of using gas for just a pot of water that scents my home Grrr In my head I always find a negative and why I shouldn t enjoy some simple pleasures in life HELP I love my work and I don t want to give up my computer In a way I would love to be without internet When I have weekends that I don t go online I find it very refreshing I feel rejuvenated like after a long spa treatment But

that they get all their nutrition we need to provide babies with the healthiest of foods If the foods have chemicals in them things can go wrong in the growing process Food dyes are known to cause ADHD HFCS is suggested to cause diabetes and some preservatives can encourage cancerous cell growth If dyes HFCS and preservatives can invade the body of an adult imagine the damage it can cause to the developing child To ensure that I m not giving Sydney anything harmful so that his body organs and brain can grow healthy eating chemical free food has become a priority Since I m still breastfeeding him I need to eat healthy and since he eats with us he needs to see that his dad is eating healthy as well Buying organic has become a priority for us when we buy fruits and veggies as well as when we buy meat We try to buy organic produce that has thin skin and that grows in the ground like potatoes carrots lettuce berries etc And I m also trying my hand in gardening and hopefully we will see our first crop this summer and fall We planted some tomatoes blueberries blackberries as well as watermelons and we are looking forward to planting fruit trees before the end of the year Not only will we have organic food right from our garden but we will also save lots of money by growing our own food Watering a lawn seems pretty senseless to me especially since the lawn is not edible either by us nor do we have goats So the next best thing is growing something that is worth watering Barbara Cole also a mother actress and activist founded Lean And Green Kids many years ago which has the mission to

  • Rebel Without a Car – Composting Means Giving Back to Nature /  illuminateLA
don t need While there are some products like cheese or bread that one shouldn t compost as they attract certain animals I built my compost heap with plant holder grates not sure what they are called but you can see it in the photo to keep pests away and I compost anything that is not toxic and not treated with chemicals Of course I don t compost meat products either At the end of the day I take my full container outside and dump it onto the top of the compost pile throw some dried leaves grass sticks or cardboard boxes on top of it and cover it with a few heaps of dirt About every three or four days I turn the compost to add some air into the mix and I make sure that the pile is not too wet or too dry If it s too dry I pour some rinse water over it Rinse water shouldn t have any soap in it or only biodegradable soap Rinsing your coffee pitcher or catching water while waiting for the hot water to come through are great ways to re use water for watering plants and for your compost Today I went outside with Sydney to feed the compost again he loves to help me with his little rake to make sure that all the dirt is evened out and he likes to throw grass and leaves on the compost piles I filled two old plastic planters with healthy nutritious dirt which will be food for my vegetable garden I could smell the sweet aroma of the dirt that indicates the mixture of dry dirt and scraps was just perfect and that composting was a success I felt proud to introduce my 16 month old baby to this
