  • Rebel Without a Car – Setting up a sustainable office /  illuminateLA
and the food containers that people bring in during their lunch break When buying snacks and food try to buy what is packaged in paper not plastic Have a water dispenser instead of water bottles Have a coffee maker in the office Buy office supplies that are made of 100 recycled paper Buy office supplies that have the least packaging and the most sustainable packaging i e recycled paper that is packaged in paper instead of recycled paper that is wrapped in plastic Encourage staff to pick up food from the local restaurants on china not in Styrofoam we take the china back when we re finished Print double sided and encourage others to do the same Keep communications online and not waste print material Printing signs and posters sustainably instead of on plastic banners Have the bathroom stocked with 100 recycled TP Use towels for drying hands instead of paper wash towel when needed Turn lights off when office of bathroom is not occupied Unplug electrical items when not in use And again recycle everything from paper to ink cartridge from cans to batteries The water bottle has been the biggest challenge because so many of my friends are used to having a water bottle waiting for them wherever they arrive So I have to always remind them to bring their own water bottles that they can refill But we have the office stacked with silverware ceramic mugs and 100 recycled paper We have our staff and our volunteers come in via Red Line bus and a lot of them also come on bikes We now have 2 inverted U racks where people can lock up their bikes right in front of our office And we carpool to meetings and ride our bikes to precinct walks Having an office

  • Rebel Without a Car – Greening Our Cities /  illuminateLA
even for cyclists There was a sense of order and people seemed to respect it I was inspired by the commitment to street furniture from the bike racks that were on every corner to the benches and shade that provided regular opportunities for people to Be and to enjoy the beautiful city that communicated over and over that people come first Landscaping was creative plentiful varied beautiful and accessible It was apparent that the streets were designed to be used and to be enjoyed I was inspired by the amount of green space in Chicago There were little parks there were medium sized parks there were huge parks There were parks for standing for eating for getting married for walking dogs for playing soccer for running for reading for socializing and for gardening There were parks that memorialized historical events and there were parks that catered to current events and festivals There were parks on the lake there were parks in courtyards there were parks on rooftops Chicago does parks I was inspired by the way things worked There was a water fountain that had three spigots and three bowls one for horses one for humans and one for puppies It was evident that this water fountain was meant to be used There were also public restrooms another simple acknowledgment of the basic needs of people Every day I saw new things that were an invitation for people to enjoy the community I found myself thinking How can I bring this commitment to Green Space Open Space and Public Space back to Los Angeles Maybe you can help me LA is big and we have lots of open space but places where one can sit and socialize are difficult to find We have the perfect weather here much better than Chicago so let s make the most of it and commit to great street furniture and great opportunities to create community LA has so many wonderful neighborhoods but they don t have the amenities such as restrooms and shade and water fountains that would welcome visitors Let s treat people with respect and accommodate their basic needs LA has such a spirit of commitment to the sustainable lifestyle but the simplest things like trash cans are based on minimum standard not on what s best for giving people opportunities for great behavior Let s design and plan everything for responsible behavior and make recycling easy for people in the public space LA is such a great city for walking for riding a bike for taking the train for riding the bus and even for driving We have many choices but for them to work we need to respect others and their choices giving way to pedestrians respecting cyclists communicating negotiating and cooperating with others on the road If nothing else LA should be the capital of getting along and I want you to join me now How Claim your right to public space Park ing Day LA is on September

  • Bike tube recycling drive July 23-25 /  illuminateLA
part of these designs is that anything made out of tubes is water proof However even if you are not feeling creative in making things out of your old bicycle tubes the great news is that you can do good by recycling them LA Performance Bike is teaming up with Liberty Tire to sponsor the Bike Tube Blow Out next weekend at Performance s new store in Woodland Hills and the refurbished Santa Monica shop Anyone who brings in their flat or unused tubes from July 23 25 will receive a 5 in store credit and can trade in up to 3 tubes for a total of 15 The old tubes are then shipped off to be recycled and put to good use This program started this past April and according to BusinessWire com the bike tubes will be collected by Liberty Tire Recycling the nation s largest collector of used and scrap tires and reused as mulch for playgrounds athletic fields railroad ties and weightlifting plates among other applications The company collects and recycles nearly one third of all of America s annual scrap tire material with a collection network that covers more than 60 000 locations in the U S In the past seven years Liberty Tire has cleaned up more than 150 dump sites littered with nearly 40 million scrap tires more than any other organization These Blow Outs have been hugely popular in other cities and the hope is that bringing it to LA will mean even more saved material from the city s landfills So gather all your tubes and take them down to either these two stores to be put to good use And next time you take your kids to the playground and walk on that rubbery ground or you run some laps
