  • Rebel Without a Car: Convert Your Electricity into Your Own Energy /  illuminateLA
wall through a very complex process Our energy is limited regardless if energy comes from coal mines or from solar initiatives Solar is not 100 sustainable either because producing solar panels and the entire solar system takes energy cables metal framing and boxes space that belongs to nature wind turbines and solar panels in the desert disturb the environment in a big way etc So regardless of where energy or electricity comes from we need to be conservative with it and being conservative isn t that difficult once you get used to certain habits The more we avoid using energy from the plug the healthier we will become because that energy will then come from us Pushing pulling lifting cranking moving our muscles is important for our bones and muscles even if it s little things like opening a can If you don t have arthritis or are not missing fingers or hands or have any other disability and have been using an electric opener for a while notice how hard your muscles will have to work to open a can manually The choice is sometimes very simple either we burn coal and create electricity to power your electric can opener or you exercise your hands and gain strength and flexibility So use your own energy and conserve whenever and wherever you can turn off the lights in rooms if you re going to be gone for more than a few minutes dim your computer and cell phone screen a bit also have a dark screensaver and desktop picture set your battery preference to power adapter and put hard disk to sleep when possible turn bluetooth off if you re not using it unplug all electronics that are not used when you go on vacation unplug all electronics from lights to radio to stove use the stairs instead of the elevator if you use elevator look for others to get in with you so it ll make the trip only once turn down your water heater to low heat wash your laundry in cold or luke warm no need to boil your clothes get solar panel patio and garden lights if you want your backyard lit get a manual powered push lawnmower mop non carpeted floors instead of vacuuming non electric mop clean your cat litter box manually clean your jewelry manually run and ride your bike outdoors instead of in the gym or a machine at home turn off the a c and open your windows to create a draft have trees around your house to give you shade put on extra sweater if you re cold Turn on the heat only if the sweater doesn t help keep you warm get energy efficient appliances and dispose of the old ones properly Please NEVER throw electric supplies into the regular trash if you use CFL lights please recycle them They are poison to the environment if not disposed properly Check for the next couple weeks where you can reduce

  • Rebel Without A Car – Print vs. Digital – Part 2: Promotion /  illuminateLA
us I love exploring learning new codes about new sites new trends etc But I m also still loving the old fashioned way of connecting to people and finding out about stuff When I go to an event I always look at the postcards in the lobby or on the bulletin board I still pick up the fliers or brochures at the fair And at the same time I import various event calendars via Google Calendar I RSVP as a maybe to interesting events on Facebook I save emails just in case I can make it to the event and I sign up to newsletters online to keep up to date to the various going ons But when we start promoting our events how do we figure out when to do what How do we best promote what event How can we be cost effective and sustainable and at the same time get the message out I m sure there are many answers and I m doing my best to change my behavior to leave less behind and at the same time not having to compromise because no matter what we do we are ending up leaving footprint behind if we want to promote our business our art our journey Even smoke signals left a footprint Whether we create print promotional materials or online promotional material we either cut trees down or mountains we use energy and water we use chemicals and metals we create waste that goes down into the gutter into the ocean and into our animals or our own digestive system But I thought of a few things that could help reduce our footprint printing postcards headshot brochures print on matte finish not glossy print double sided print less regardless of the price difference print on smaller paper cards business card 4 or 8 up if you print from home print on recycled paper print on thinner paper reuse old paper scripts resumes board meeting papers etc create images that use less ink PowerPoint Presentations website printouts postcard designs etc hand them out to people who you talk to instead of leaving huge stacks at places leave just a few at venues make the invites unique or multi functional so they become keepers not trash print local and pick up by walking or biking to the shop or combine your driving trip with another errand when mailing to CDs and Agents your production postcard team up with the cast and devide up the list and mail once every two weeks It will help you all financially and the CD or Agent won t receive 4 cards of the same event print with soy or other sustainable ink posting events online post on sites that you know are popular post on sites that are local to your event venue work invite only your local friends for example create a local list on Facebook and add only them to the invitation create a website or a webpage that people

  • Hollywood gets excited over bikes /  illuminateLA
came out smiled up to his ears and said Here take it for a spin My husband Stephen Box and I test rode the bikes and while Stephen interviewed Bechir people from all walks young and old came into the rental place smiling excited and curious about the bike rental options The air was electric Literally A week later which was yesterday representatives of iRoll Bikes came to Bechir s store to show him their models and the excitement was felt around the block People eating at restaurants near by came out to see what the bikes were about Kids stood on the curb with their parents Cyclists who rode by did a double take Young women s faces lit up as they passed us on the sidewalk looking over the bikes their features and their ease of use Bechir s Hollywood Rent a Bike business is the first one of its kind in Hollywood The City of Los Angeles had the opportunity to engage in the Bike Share program years ago when CBS Decaux brought its street furniture billboard program to LA Demonstrating the vision or lack thereof that is part of LA s DNA our leadership passed on the opportunity to get a funded Bike Share program and selected the current bus bench kiosk program as the payoff for giving up advertising rights to CBS Decaux Mayor Villaraigosa who Bechir approached for charging stations on Hollywood Blvd for his electric cars passed on the opportunity to work with Bechir on a fantastic sustainable business solution when he turned his back on Bechir s plea for help City Council President Eric Garcetti was no help and Councilman Tom LaBonge was only able to think of obstacles to Bechir s dreams But Bechir plugs away no pun intended The electric

  • All dressed up and nowhere to park /  illuminateLA
clean Even when I ride dressed down I don t want to walk into my meeting with grease all over my hands because I had to maneuver my bike into some tight parking quarters When I go somewhere on my bike I want the same respect towards my mode as motor vehicle drivers do I need space a well lit area eyes on the parking area and I want the parking attendant to be as friendly and accommodating to me as s he was with the motor vehicle driver in front of me Michelle Mowery from DOT hands out her misguided bike rack installation guide Parking is one of the basic elements that would make cycling more enjoyable because when I arrive on a bike and find great bike parking I relax and enjoy myself On the other hand when I have to lock my bike up in a bad place when I get yelled at by security guards when I worry that my bike will be damaged or stolen or booted I have a hard time paying attention at my meeting or enjoying my meal or spending my money It s my first impression and it s either good or bad but it has an impact on my entire experience Cyclists shouldn t have to fight to be treated like motorists to have accommodations waiting for them when they arrive to be supported with the same consideration and respect as others who require lots of space Nobody should be mistreated pushed scolded lectured and given a long list of No responses to the simple request for bike parking Why does it happen Because we allow it to happen and we fail to demand the simplest of accommodations safe and efficient bike parking It took us 6 months to get bike racks installed at the new downtown LAPD headquarters across the street from City Hall 6 months after the grand opening the DOT finally installed racks on the street out of sight of the LAPD officers stationed in the lobby and short of their own meager bike parking standards Even when they finally comply the LADOT falls short bolts missing distance to each other varies location is abainst code etc For 3 years I ve tried to get good bike racks at the Museum Square properties but have been dissed by the property managers assistant many times and have never been put in touch with the manager until 3 weeks ago when Stephen called him because my bike got booted again I had parked it where it was safe not in the wheel crowded wheel benders that I always pass up When did security guards get the right to seize personal property When did the Museum Square get a variance that relieved them of their obligation to provide bike parking The Hollywood Vine Metro station still has no bike parking in spite of the fact that it s was in development and construction for over a decade The ribbon cutting

  • Rebel Without A Car – Print vs. Digital – Part 1: Books /  illuminateLA
I don t think there is such a thing as too many books and I don t think at all that books are not sustainable Sure printing books means cutting trees and cutting trees has many consequences But trees can always be replenished We could plant the entire planet full of trees Trees are always good to have and trees are a natural resource Trees are cut down for toys furniture cutlery for building materials office supplies clothes and yes books Trees or rather wood can be reused many times and when it s life is over it can be composted and mother nature will happily gulp up the nutrients of the wood or paper Now the new green concept behind reading are all these electronic gadgets which is kind of not new since we have been reading the news online and we are all blogging online and exchanging information is the quickest electronically via phone computer text etc I ve been reading news blogs event listings etc on line for many years now however I disagree with the electronic book craze of Kindle Alex the Sony Reader or whatever new is coming to the market Electronics are bad for the environment no matter how we look at it There is metal plastics pvc lamps batteries and many more elements that need to be separated and composed of properly when the life of the gadget has ended or when we get bored with it and we throw it in the trash In US Households only under 18 of electronics is disposed of properly Lot of electronics are being shipped overseas to poorer countries which means when those people are done with the product they have nowhere to take it We basically are just shipping our trash out of the US but no matter where we are on this planet the waste that gets dumped improperly will end up leaking into our water systems and it will harm us all Even if these electronics go to Africa the water that the chemicals seep into is the same water that we drink here The dirt that gets poisoned on some island is the same dirt that we walk on in the US There is an effect to everything no matter how far away it seems and we are obligated to take care of the planet not just in our back yard but everywhere on earth As much as these electronic gadgets are exciting and as much as they seem like the green choice of the new generation readers they are bad for the environment A book can desenegrate when thrown into the trash A Kindle can t No worm will feed of it s components no ant will carry one back to it s nest to feed the family with A book can provide shelter or a nesting for an animal Alex can t because it would leak toxins A book will remind your friends of last years book club gathering and
