  • LA Bike Plan – Bike Lanes in Los Angeles Are Not For Me! /  illuminateLA
of curb where on street parking is present I guess the consultants planners designers and engineers who worked on this plan never heard of John Forester the father of all vehicular cyclists and cycling activist who writes With typical car body widths of 5 8 to 6 1 typical door widths of 3 2 curb gap of 0 7 and bicycle handlebar width of 2 the minimum total lane width required to clear typical opened doors is 12 For larger cars it runs to 12 5 or more For commercial vehicles it is about 14 reference 1 foot is a huge difference when calculating my chances of being hit by a door and I would err in favor of John Forester after all he knew what he was doing and LADOT according to LA s bike infrastucture doesn t know what their doing The drawings and designs show so many discrepencies that your head will hurt just after viewing a few pages 2 Bike lanes give a false sense of security to cyclists because they don t realize that they are in the door zone 3 Bike lanes give a false sense of safety for drivers when they pass cyclists too fast not leaving enough distance between the moving vehicle and a moving cyclist A recent study in Britain shows that drivers don t leave nearly enough room for cyclists when they pass them in a bike lane whereas they leave more room between them and cyclists when there is no bike lane 4 Bike lanes in LA are on streets where the speed limit goes as high as 50 mph It would be cavalier of me to encourage my friends to ride on a street that is way to fast for their comfort just because there are bike lanes Bike lanes have never protected anybody from being hit the cyclists have merely been moved out of the way of cars passing faster and faster through the many neighborhoods 5 Bike lanes are used by many to double park look at Chandler in North Hollywood others for jogging see Sunset in Silver Lake or for collecting road debris see Anaheim in Wilmington or as an additional lane in traffic congestions Santa Monica Blvd Transit Parkway 6 Bike lanes are used for storing trash collecting bins on collection days There is a municipal code that says that people will be fined if they put their trash bins into the bike lane because that obstructs traffic bike lanes are part of the traffic lane and require special road closure permit if it has to be closed or obstructed in any way that would interfere with traffic but the City doesn t enforce Lack of political will In short bike lanes are used for many things in Los Angeles from joggers to shopping cart pushers for parking and for storing stuff by motor cyclists and suicide cyclists cyclists riding against traffic and occasionally it is used by cyclists who then get squeezed into

  • Why Non-Cyclists Should Care About the LA Bike Plan /  illuminateLA
why we all should care especially because of our economy and our health Health Yeah whatever we know that biking is a healthy exercise but I rather run inside the gym where the air is better The air is actually not better inside the gym because the gym has carpet paint synthetics misc chemicals window cleaner carpet cleaner other peoples deodorants and parfumes etc sweat and germs The gym is not aired out and the air is stuffy it is wasn t for the air conditioner keeping the stuffy smell out And if we encourage biking the air outside would be better because we wouldn t burn so much CO2 that causes asthma that lowers peoples immune system that kills crops and plants and trees that heats up our atmosphere Also the health of your neighborhood is at stake when streets become cut through roads for the commuters There is noise pollution as well as air pollution kids can t play on the street and old people can t go outside to enjoy an afternoon walk because the streets are dangerous A healthy neighborhood has cyclists and pedestrians which means that streets are meant for people in the community not those who want to get out of your neighborhood quickly Economy Don t tell me that cycling is better for the economy In my car I shop more because I can carry more And I contribute to the economy by buying the car and buying gas and all that comes with owning a car If we help our neighborhood become bike friendly our local businesses will benefit from it not Target or Walmart or Exon or Mobil When I bike I tend to stop anywhere because I don t need to worry about parking space or because I m not pushing the gas pedal to get home quickly I stop at random stores I stop to talk to the homeless I stop because I see someone I know or just because I feel like getting a drink or buying a book More cyclists on the street prove to be healthy not only to businesses but also for the safety of the community because with cyclists there are eyes and ears open to happenings Also bikes don t wear out the streets because they don t weigh that much which means that less money needs to be put into street repair and more money can be put into beautification or your neighborhood improvements This Draft Bike Plan is suggesting to make LA a bikeable city in 12 years but there are so many things that can be done to make LA more safe for cyclists like enforcing the law when cyclists are endangered or hurt and demanding respect from those who don t bike We are all humans regardless of what mode we use to travel and Respect would be a great start and it shouldn t take 12 years for that These are just a few things that I think

  • A Woman’s Comfort on Our Streets /  illuminateLA
always well lit and they are maintained to the most part I can see where I m going who is ahead of me or behind me and I can be seen if anything happens I avoid any side street even if I have to do a detour They are not well lit they have potholes cracks dark intersections and I m invisible by anybody who drives by and could be witness if anything happened I like to feel safe wherever I travel I like to feel safe when I m dressed up without worrying about harassment I like to feel safe when I m carrying my equipment and not worry about being robbed And it is not unique to me because I m a woman Anybody likes these same things regardless of what mode they travel But I am the best judge for my own safety and nobody should tell me I shouldn t be out on the street because it s late and dangerous on a bike or on foot That s like telling me to not dress up or wear a skirt because there are wild men out there and it can be dangerous Bike lanes or paths or routes give no consideration to the time of day people travel At night paths and routes are empty and prone to criminal activity Paths and routes have been segregated from the busy streets for the benefit of the speed of motor vehicles and to the danger of those who travel alone Bike lanes are the pedestrian zone for those who come out of the clubs and chat with friends before they get into the car and they are also the jogging area for runners who feel safer running against traffic in the bike lane than on the dark and broken sidewalk In LA we have the freedom to choose what is convenient what is safe and what makes us comfortable At least most folks do but when it comes to cyclists or mass transit users oftentimes the authorities be it the LAPD LASD or the Transit Authorities like to tell us where to go where to be and how to travel The bus stops are dirty stinky and without shade throughout most of the city the bike lanes paths routes are trap zones that cyclists are told are for their benefit The choices for me when I m on a bike range from riding in the door zone to riding on an empty street that nobody travels to riding on segregated bike paths that have long stretches with no escape routes and no eyes on it from the community My choice I avoid the door zone and if I travel on a bike lane I ride on the outside white line away from the cars A British study recently came out with their report that bike lanes are unsafe for many reasons and one of them is that drivers are not giving enough room to cyclists I don t

and Benzisothiazolinone as a preservative less than 0 05 Pretty cool Maybe if we mix the first three ingredients at home we can leave out the Benzisothiazolinone and only make as much as we need for one use According to Dan their product is made local in Los Angeles and the product container is 1 Recyclable They were nice people with great energy and enthusiasm for the planet I was impressed Lucky for me BikeRoWave was also at the Expo They had a wrenching booth near us and Richard helped me fix my back brakes and he also checked various parts on my bike that needed tightening and lubing and he got me safe back on the road after a long day at the Expo The highlight though came late after the Expo already closed and after many of the booth vendors already left Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger showed up to check out the Alternative Fuel Vehicles The vendors who had alternative transportation displays not cars were literally in the back corner by the emergency exit well hidden from the crowd But that didn t discourage us from trying to get the Governor to our booth Stephen Box went to the press guy and to the Governor and asked them to come through our area if he dares to be green Well maybe he didn t put it that way but he could have Arnold wore a green tie to the special occasion so he was meant to stop by the Greenster Park ing booth for sure And believe it or not he did Well not really but Stephen stopped him right when he was about to pass us and leave the building and shook Arnolds hand and told him about the Greensters and about sustainable transportation for the entertainment industry
