maintaining fueling and storing a car costs a minimum of 8000 per year in Los Angeles If one would like to live not only a sustainable life but also enjoy a higher quality of life one smart investment of that money would be to find an apartment that is near a transit hub and near a neighborhood that one can walk to or bike to Humans are social animals and studies show that if we live together gather at public spaces and interact with each other we not only live happier lives but we also live longer And as actors being around other people is essential to our craft We need to study real people not just actors in movies portraying real people we need to learn from our communities and we have to expose our senses to the outside world and not just to what we are comfortable with Being in a community that you love that you can feel physically free in you can move about without being restricted to a car opens up your creative juices and increases your opportunities It s simply not true that it results in having to give up auditioning for and accepting acting jobs When the moment comes to audition and look good you can always rent a car if the weather or other circumstances won t allow you to bike walk or take the bus Two car companies that I ve been renting from and I highly recommend are 699 Rent A Car that is located in Hollywood Van Nuys and just opened an office on the West Side off Venice and the 405 Fwy The other one is Hollywood Rent A Car located in the heart of Hollywood with beautiful hybrid and soon to come electric cars They have great prices and their cars will make you the talk of the audition or the party for sure These two car rental places are not only great because of their service and their prices but also because they are located in neighborhoods that are conducive to a car free lifestyle Keep in mind if you rent a car for an interview or a job it is tax deductible Hollywood is a neighborhood that is very walkable ridable There are lots of options for taking transit from DASH to Metro Busses to Metro Red Line and you can now also flag down Taxis Just check the LA Walk Score and you will find it on the top ranking Other communities that are great to live in where you can walk take public transit or bike are North Hollywood Downtown LA Santa Monica Pasadena West Hollywood East Hollywood home of three Metro Red Line stations the bicycle district and the movie industry Los Feliz and Silver Lake just to name a few These are great communities that support the car free lifestyle and are supported by significant transit options When you are planning your move to LA type in the address of an

pack it in pack it out picnic and then add the leave things better than you found them philosophy and your simple family picnic can turn an enjoyable afternoon into an opportunity to change the world Here are some easy tips 1 Bring your own reusable mug and ask all your guests to bring theirs as well If they don t bring it they won t drink It is fascinating to see how many will remember to bring their mug when you put it that way 2 Ask each one of your guests to bring one thing to make it easy and simple one person can bring the wooden utensils or the silverware and some cloth napkins one person can bring a couple bottles of alcoholic beverages if you plan on serving alcohol one person can bring fruit juices or homemade lemonade in bottles In the old days people knew how to pack bottles safely without breaking them We can re learn that technique not everything has to be drop proof one person can bring reusable plates I carried 30 ceramic plates wrapped in two towels on my bike to Goodwill the other day and not one of them broke Woohoo one person can make some cold dishes in reusable dishware one person can make sweets and carry them in a pie dish everybody can bring a towel or small blanket to sit on or one person can bring a big blanket Now this seems like a simple picnic and it involves 7 people Imagine how simple it can become if you are more than 7 If you are less then divide it up so that everybody will pitch in in more than one way I carry with me at all times my mug napkin chopsticks water bottle sometimes a container to carry my leftover dinner home in and of course a canvas bag All this is with me in my bag on my bike I m used to walking out the house as if I was going for a picnic and life is so much more fun You can find some fantastic picnic ware online that is inexpensive and will last a lifetime Bahama Deluxe Travel Picnic Set for 2 Wine picnic basket for 4 that would easily fit even on a bike or in a bike trailer Bamboo Dinner Plates Reusable Bamboo Utensil Sets These are beautiful and I have some friends who carry these withthem all the time and use them Silverware set for 4 REI Travel Picnic Kit for 2 Our society has become so used to creating everything temporary that our memories are also only made up of fleeting moments Remember the days when you and your mom packed for a trip You might not remember the trip but you remember the time packing Or when you and your friends got together and painted your new apartment Or when you went to summer camp and your grandpa packed something for you and slipped a note

during the shipping time This means that the vitamins are not coming from the earth and the sun but the ripe fruits are just a process of aging Competitive prices Imported fruits are more expensive because of transportation costs gas and customs Helping your local economy Keeping the money local helps you and it helps the farmers Strengthening family owned businesses Health Find the produce that is pesticide free and certified Much better for your health Community Studies show that people at Farmer s Markets have as many as 10 times more conversations greetings and other social interactions than people in the supermarkets City planners are also learning that Farmer s Markets can be used to bring people together from politicians to the activists Leaders can raise awareness about local issues using these venues This is right up my alley Less pollution and less trash Trucks and planes that import fruits and vegetables are polluting our air and our waters Buying locally grown produce will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution in our waters Also you won t find stickers and plastic wraps around the produce that you buy from Farmer s Markets I always find it bizarre when I see the plastic wrap around the organic fruits in the supermarket The plastic wrap gets not only into our landfill but also into our waters where fish will swallow it and into our land where birds and mammals will accidentally eat or inhale those plastic strings Plastic also blights our communities when they end up on the sidewalk in our playgrounds on our lawn Hormone free Animals from small local farms are less likely to be fed with hormones and more likely to be raised free range Physical exercise Farmer s Markets usually are set up around neighborhoods that the community can walk to ride their bikes to or take local buses to Sensory exercise You will find yourself relaxed refreshed and smiling after you visit your Farmer s Market Smelling fresh fruits and vegetables touching homemade wares seeing all shades of colors that nature brings will make you feel like you re on a little vacation I think these are all great reasons to ditch the chain grocery stores and find a local Farmer s Market near you My film AT WHAT PRICE a sustainable production will cater fruits and veggies from a local Farmer s Market and from our friend s back yard We already set up a list of local markets that are open during our shoot dates so that we can have our Greensters our sustainable team of Teamsters bring the produce in on their bikes Farmnet com has a list of Farmer s Markets in LA County The Agricultural Marketing Service is a great resource for your Farmer s Market needs no matter where you live Gridskipper has a list of Restaurants in Los Angeles that serve locally grown food Daily Trojan has a list of restaurants that thinks about your health as well as

more hazardous then regular bulbs so I will let you make that decision on your own If you use CFL bulbs and they are burnt out please take it to the Hazardous Waste Center along with your batteries CDs DVDs and electronics CFL s are really bad for you and the environment because they contain mercury A couple of years ago I picked up a bunch of CFL bulbs at various City Fairs and I ve been recycling them since they burnt out But when I m done with the last one I m going back to the good old Mr Edison bulbs I want to reduce the toxins in my house and in my life as much as possible so this is one of the things I choose to do I rather pay a couple bucks extra in my electric bill and turn the light off in the rooms that I m not in than support something that is bad for the environment As an added extra I m reposting here some of the cleaning alternative tips that I also posted in January s article that can work miracles Bathtub and bath or kitchen sink cleaner Mix two tablespoons of salt with the juice from one large lemon or two small lemons Put on some cleaning gloves and dip a rag it can be an old sock or a piece of towel that you cut up for cleaning into this mix and wipe your bathtub sink and countertops Leave it on for a few minutes if you want to get rid of difficult stains or if you need to disinfect This mix is 100 biodegradable and has quite the cleaning power The lemon and the salt both act as bleaching agents and disinfect at the same time The lemon will leave a nice fresh scent You will be amazed at how powerful this mix is Don t clean with your bare hands or the salt and lemon will eat your skin Toilet Bowl Cleaner Mix two tablespoons of baking soda and enough white vinegar to create a paste To remove really difficult stains mix two tablespoons of Borax with lemon juice until you have created a paste DON T put any bleach in this mix Bleach kills everything and is very harmful to the environment It s best if you stay away from it altogether Keep your drain clog free Toss two tablespoons of baking soda into your drain and then pour one cup of vinegar down on top of it It will fizz when you do this Let the mixture sit for five minutes and then pour a pot of boiling water down the drain Don t burn yourself I hope I didn t scare you too much with these tips As I was doing research to write this article I was getting more and more inspired by all the great things and possibilities out there on how to live greener and be more sustainable I know we
