  • It’s Time to Make LA Green! /  illuminateLA
Ahh spring A time when neighborhoods and parks are alive with the sound of power lawnmowers and the air is redolent of blooming bushes and gasoline fumes We know that push lawnmowers are better for the environment but it sure takes a lot of work especially at golf courses But there are alternatives to both and they come on four legs Herds of sheep or goats could trim grass at parks cemeteries or other large expanses of lawn for pennies and maybe do a few residential jobs on the side Unlike power mowers when these grass cutters break down they turn into a tasty meal Imagine the bucolic imagery of a flock of the fluffy beasts being led by a Rec and Parks Department shepherd alongside Riverside Drive in Griffith Park Sound silly Only if you don t like saving money Last year Turin Italy saved nearly 40 000 in gardener fees by grazing sheep in its parks 7 Harvest rainwater and reuse gray water Contrary to what outsiders think we know it rains plenty in Southern California And when it does we re prone to minor flooding on problem streets and the occasional hillside falling down Meanwhile much of that natural resource goes whooshing down storm drains into the sea A simple water barrel attached to a home s gutters can recapture some of the water before it s lost Homeowners can find kits online for about 100 Better yet the city could encourage rainwater capture in the same way it started encouraging composting a few years back by providing workshops in how to do it and offering barrels at cost to people who take the workshop Then there s gray water the stuff that people shudder to think about This is the water that comes out of the washing machine and bath tub and faucets not the toilet But right now state and local laws make it very difficult and expensive for homeowners or businesses to install systems that let people reuse gray water for irrigation That means gallons and gallons of water are sent to the wastewater treatment plant purified at top dollar and then released into the ocean while we use drinking water to water our lawns As a result there are guerrilla DIY gray water recapture movements afoot in the city Better that the city and state guide the safe and effective capture of that water for landscape irrigation than to leave it just to amateur water savers armed with determination a little information and a wrench 8 Never buy another paper towel again It s shocking how expensive paper towels are these days 2 per roll at times Save money and paper pulp by investing some of the extra paycheck bucks due to the president s tax credit for working Americans into buying a handful of ShamWows or microfiber towels that can be washed and reused They might seem like cheesy as seen on TV products but they work for years 9 Embrace shade

6 on all sides This will save you not only money but also lots of paper from ending up in the landfill If you print a resume on an 8 5 11 and then crop to 8 10 set the margin to 1 on each side If you have a cell phone or iPhone with internet access avoid printing out your destination map and just save the map on your phone or type the address and the direction into your phone and save yourself the paper and the ink When you buy paper notebook pencils envelopes etc make sure they re recycled Every store sells them nowadays and though it might cost a bit more you will be more frugal about wasting it by printing on both sides right Write your to do and your shopping list onto your phone or into your daily planner Or use a used envelope to write on You can even cut up old envelopes into equal pieces and staple or sew them together to make a little notepad Recycle your old ink cartridges Staples will give you 3 back for selected inkers but you can give them back all old cartridges Btw They will also recycle your old batteries and cell phones Way to go Bring your own mug and utensils to the office and try to bring your own lunch instead of eating out Most places that give you carry out food will package it in styrofoam with plastic forks and knives and they will bag it in a plastic bag Yuck If your printer allows try using Soy Ink Get yourself a Stapleless Stapler for better organizing Turn your computer off or put it to sleep when you are away If you use wireless keyboard and mouse make sure you use rechargeable batteries and recycle them when they are dead Have cloth as well as recycled paper towels in the kitchen This will give people the freedom to choose and will save some paper from the landfill I usually shake my hand out and dry it off on my pants or my skirt Use public transportation ride your bike or carpool to work I guarantee that you will make at least one new friend in your daily travels than if you drive If your employer pays for all or part of your parking ask your employer if you are entitled to the parking cash out choice Get paid to not bring a car to work Remember to recycle everything including old machinery electronic equipment light bulbs batteries etc These items are often times easier to dump into the trash but are also the most harmful to our environment because they leak toxic waste If you have equipment or furniture that you don t need anymore but that is still usable give it away to a charity of your choice or post it on Freecycle For more interesting office tips visit Earth 911 Conservatree can give you lots of advice on what paper

forward to the fun evening Earth Hour starts at 8 30 pm and lasts until 9 30 pm Join us by switching your lights off for an hour Go outside on a nice evening stroll ride your bike around the city with friends go camping or do whatever you want as long as your lights are turned off Even if you can t participate from 8 30 9 30pm for whatever reason you can still make a difference In 2006 we prevailed in asking the LA Zoo to turn off their lights You can ask the DWP to not hold a Light Festival that disturbs the urban environment You can switch to energy efficient light bulbs in your household make sure you recycle them They are extremely hazardous and ask your work place to do the same Turn off your computer when you are not around or put it in sleep mode and ask your neighborhood businesses to turn off their bright lights when the store is closed Lobby your Citycouncil to ban digital billboards etc Have a wonderful weekend and thank you for turning off your lights to raise awareness about global warming and our environment To read up

go eat out at your local restaurant or if you go to any store for that matter and they provide safe and secure bike parking ask to speak to the manager and thank them Next time you might be encouraged to ride your bike and the manager might be encouraged to get more racks if it fills up When you go grocery shopping and the cashier asks you if you have your own bag thank them for thinking outside the box and thank the person in front of you if he refuses the plastic or paper bag When you are on a movie set even if it s a small budget student film ask for a recycling bin for the background actors I worked on a TV show a few years ago and I asked for a recycling bin for the lounge The PA s looked at me as if I was insane I insisted They brought in some bins reluctantly and wrote on a piece of paper that said recycling and put it next to the regular trash Most of the trash was mixed up with recyclables so the bin didn t make any difference really but since then most big studios recycle When you eat out and ask for a doggie bag ask for cardboard not Styrofoam and tell them to leave the utensils napkins and straws out of the bag you have your own at home and no plastic bag please You brought your own If you can bring your own container and ask that to be filled Thank restaurants who use biodegradable packaging They probably pay a few cents more than for Styrofoam packaging and they will need all the encouragement that they can get Ask for free range chicken when you order and ask if they buy their fruits and vegetables locally at the Farmers Market Even if they don t you just planted an idea into their head And if more people will ask the owners or the managers will start listening If bathrooms don t use recycled paper towels ask the manager to consider it Recycled paper uses less energy and fewer chemicals than new and bleached paper Ask at your work or at the gym or restaurant to install motion detectors in their restrooms and to switch to efficient lighting They could save hundreds of dollars on their electric bills and they would save a lot of greenhouse gasses Before you schedule your next screening or you promote your next theater production find out if there is public transit near by and ask people to either use it ride a bike or car pool Put public transit info on all your promotional materials If your apartment has planters team up with some neighbors and ask the manager if you can plant fruits vegetables or herbs in these planters instead of flowers Fruits and vegetables will not only help your community but these will flower which will bring bees which are a sign
