time in my workshop But ever since writing two articles Smaller Than a Paperback and Embedded Video Capture on a Budget for Embedded Linux Journal back in 2001 I have been interested in the idea of trying to make a living at what I love most to do which is to make one of a kind objects continually try new things and test new concepts and write about the results

  • I Make Projects - The Deluxe Reverse Geocache Puzzle
terminal interface over USB The key is then re locked inside and the box can be passed off to a new person During every activation a camera takes random photos Once the box is solved the camera s memory card can be accessed and the photos viewed Some Design Details There are a number of differences between the Deluxe Reverse Geocache and its original inspiration Also this piece of work turned out to be both easier and harder than I expected it to be I ll share some useful tips about the construction and programming The device uses an Arduino Pro 3 3V as the main processor a 20 Channel Helical GPS Receiver a nice big LCD and a variety of custom enclosures connectors and other components The camera is a JPG Color Camera and matching JPEG Trigger board A 6Ah Lithium Polymer battery and charging circuit with a couple DC DC voltage converters rounds out the system A Pololu LV pushbutton power switch takes care of power control activating the system powers it up and when the job is done it shuts itself off Thanks to the LV power switch virtually no power is consumed when OFF which is a great advantage to a battery powered device with short and irregular on times like this one As mentioned and unlike the original inspiration the case itself is not locked from the inside padlocks secure the case on the outside The KEY is the part that is secured inside When the puzzle is solved the key is dispensed to the user This makes it easy to keep a backdoor simply hold on to a copy of the keys The orange capped tube on the top right of the case is the holder for the key A motor on the inside slides a solid barrier over to block access to the inside of the tube when the puzzle is locked When unlocked the barrier is moved out of the way and the key can be accessed The motor is a Solarbotics GM3 The early prototype proof of concept so you can see what a messy process creativity can be The entire device is run from a large Lithium Polymer battery which is 3 7V This posed a slight problem since most motor drivers don t normally work on such low voltages However it was easily solved by using a Z Bridge which I was familiar with from playing with BEAM Robotics It easily did the job and I had it on hand A bit more about the camera The camera deserves a special mention not the electronics part which is nearly completely self contained but the design of integrating it physically into the device I wanted the camera to point more or less towards the user as it took some random snapshots but this was more challenging than I expected I mounted the camera lens into a hole in the top of the case which of course points it straight up

  • I Make Projects - The RFID Skull Project (or, How to play Real-Life HALO Multiplayer)
certain way that doesn t leave their hands free to aim or shoot a gun It s a nice dynamic for the game it s everyone versus the person holding the skull Except that when you get the skull you shift 100 to escape and evade and the role is reversed for you It s best played in close quarters or a town type of setting There are other little bits and features in there too for example a loud beeping that notifies you when you are now the top scorer and also gives away your position When time is up the skull reports the scores That Sounds a Bit Familiar If you are a HALO player it should I was watching my nephews play the Oddball multiplayer portion of the game and thought to myself I could make something that does that We could play Oddball in real life with it About 6 months later I was done In Fall 2008 it finally got a playtesting outdoors We used Airsoft guns It was fun You appear to have gone out of your way to make it gross I did that partly for practice in making real looking corpses And partly because I had an anatomical study quality skull and I could and it looks good Partly to cover up the holes and screws But mostly because the actual inspiration HALO s Oddball game uses a skull The skull is from the Anatomical Chart Company if you re interested I am very pleased with how I was able to fit everything inside without having to add any new holes Everything is either hidden like the power and recharging plug in the upper palette or uses an existing hole switches in the eyesockets Half of the work was the electronics the

scientific process poor 13 was subjected to It also hints at more where are subjects 1 through 12 Were there any after 13 Also 13 s sad fate is alluded to with Survived 8 minutes 9 seconds And where is his skin The Paper Personally I think the label should always look old and worn To get the look I obtained for Test Subject 13 I printed the label on an inkject whose ink is water soluble keep in mind and liberally coated both sides well with rubber based contact cement Then once dry I glued the label onto the jar with more contact cement not being particularly neat about it I find it gives an old style pasted on look Remember that if you print on an inkjet printer the ink will run if exposed to water Photocopies or laser printed labels will not run Rhytididae Cephalopodiae UNKNOWN HYBRID SPECIMEN RHYTIDIDAE CEPHALOPODIAE PICKLED FANGS REMOVED This specimen is a little more complex than Shrinking Potion Test Subject 13 but at its heart it consists merely of a pickle jar lid painted black and an expands in water octopus from the dollar store The specimen itself is a toy found in many novelty and thrift shops It looks like a hard plastic animal but when placed in water it expands and grows greatly They are excellent for putting in jars like this I particularly like this one because of the tentacles which grew and crowded each other out It has a kind of trapped animal sinister look to it and of course the Fangs Removed part of the label brings its own suggestions especially when you notice the small blood smears just red food coloring and a few grains of salt for texture on the label The only thing that was done for this specimen other than adding water was to add a single drop of green food coloring which gave the water a slight greenish tinge Also when water is used in a jar which is meant to be permanent I would suggest adding a sanitizing agent to the water to prevent any possible bacterial growth While stuff growing in the jar might look cool it s probably not particularly healthy to have around especially if it accidentally breaks Some suitable sanitizers would be a small amount of disinfectant such as a household cleanser or if you are a wine or beer maker some bottle sanitizer The Jar Top The top of the jar was made to look less like a pickle jar by not only painting the lid but also wrapping it in jute twine You can glue it in place as it is wrapped then paint it with coffee or strong tea so it looks darker and older I have had also had good luck with Dipping the top of a jar into melted wax either with or without twine wrapped underneath Liberally coating the top of the jar with more rubber based contact cement which gives

what appears to be a malfunctioning keyboard Eventually your victim will decide something is wrong Sooner or later they will start trying to find the problem and when they do they ll find the mystery of a decapitated USB plug with an empty cable Even techies will be scratching their heads in confusion over it How could an empty cable cause such problems Of course you will know the answer it s Haunted Cutaway view showing hidden electronics inside Or maybe it s not really as empty as it looks Neat How Do I Get One You can make your own with the instructions given below They make great gags and excellent gifts How Does an Empty Cable Become Haunted by the Ghost of a Decapitated USB Keyboard It s very simple You start on a Full Moon Then you take an ordinary USB keyboard and plug it into a computer with the date and time set to 6 66pm on October 31st Now comes the hard part While loading up a text by H P Lovecraft you must suddenly unplug the USB keyboard while invoking the name of HID the many tentacled elder god of corrupted device drivers exactly at the stroke of midnight Then precisely at the moment the connection is broken but before the keyboard loses all power you must decapitate the keyboard by cutting through the cable preferably with a rusted multitool but a mail order ceremonial dagger is acceptable Don t worry about making a clean cut In fact the messier the better The ghost of the keyboard becomes trapped inside the cable at the moment of death causing it to forevermore haunt any machine it is connected to with phantom keyboard signals And that is how a Haunted USB Cable is made Those Directions
