  • The winners and losers of the Game of Thrones Finale | Infinite Ideas
we do think that her punishment was a little severe Perhaps death would have been kinder to her Cersei needs to be in control she likes being at the top of the food chain and has been pulling the strings of her puppet kings for a long time now Next season will prove very interesting for Cersei with Myrcella now dead her power is slipping Let s be honest the finale was never going to end well for Stannis When you put your trust in a red witch who tells you that burning your daughter at the stake is a good idea things are rarely going to come up roses Arguably Stannis had little option but to charge on Winterfell but his poor battle strategy and depleted army meant that there was little other option for him but to fail Yes we would have loved to see Ramsay impaled on a very long lance but it wasn t to be However I think that after episode nine I preferred Ramsay anyway never thought I would say that Nevertheless not all of the finale was filled with grief and sorrow Our first winner is Samwell What a lad Sam has been very lucky this season and indeed in the whole show having killed a White Walker Sam was almost killed by his Night s Watch colleagues but survived thanks to Gilly s intuition So now he s managed to negotiate a nice little homestead for his girlfriend and baby and escaped Castle Black before all hell broke loose I would love to think that if Sam was there Jon would have survived but most likely Sam would have been killed too We re thrilled to say that Jorah was definitely a winner this series though shockingly I would have rather seen him die a noble death last night than lovely Jon Jorah ended season 4 on a bit of a low point having been exiled from Meereen and all hope for a happy future seemed lost Now I m not saying that season 5 has been an easy ride for him we still need to know how he is going to fare having been touched by the stone men but he is now back in favour with Daenerys and in the small council with Daario and Tyrion Yes perhaps he should have been less clingy but without his intuition Daenerys might not have made it to the finale There are some lingering questions like where is Gendry Is he still floating in the sea Did he drown or did he wash up on an island somewhere and is now enjoying a carefree life away from House rivalries Where is Bran Yes his storyline is incredibly dull but I miss Hodor and also isn t Bran supposed to play a big part in the battle to come Is Jaqen H ghar good or bad Poor Arya really had a tough time of it but I m sure she s strong enough to

  • Jon Snow's emerging as an effective leader (a review of last night's Game of Thrones) | Infinite Ideas
If taking Winterfell had been offered to many other characters we re looking at you Lord Baelish they would most likely have jumped at the chance not looking ahead at the repercussions or how limited their time in power may end up being Jon can see the bigger picture He understands that taking Winterfell would not have ended his troubles by now he too is aware of the Mother of Dragons So in the latest instalment Jon enacted his first act of discipline as leader of the Night s Watch After Janos Slynt refused to obey orders Jon was forced to execute him in the courtyard of Castle Black with all eyes of the Night s Watch upon him Just two episodes earlier Jon showed mercy when it came to the death of Mance Rader He had pleaded with him to surrender to Stannis and when he refused Jon spared him from the agony of being burnt alive However Jon s execution of Janos not only shows him as a powerful leader who is not to be messed with it demonstrates how much has changed in Jon since the first series Ned Stark said at the very beginning that the man who passes the sentence should swing the sword Jon was echoing the rhetoric of his father and proving that he was a truer son of Winterfell by rejecting Stannis than he would ever be had he accepted the offer When Janos begged for mercy Jon did not show it much like Daenerys in episode two Being an effective and trustworthy leader does not mean always keeping those you lead happy It is about setting an example and knowing what is in the best interest of the future of your company and the safety of those you protect For Jon

  • Daenerys takes flight (season 5, episode 9) | Infinite Ideas
come We may not have seen any White Walkers last night but their presence was not forgotten Jon needs help and quickly They are coming So where will the help come from you ask After the highly upsetting first half of the episode the second half was much more enjoyable I m sure that Arya will get some use out of Needle before the series is ended after heading to Braavos she seems to have had very little to do in the way of blood lust and she hasn t been able to cross any more names off her list However it wasn t Arya s oysters that got us all excited Over in Meereen it wasn t just wonderful Jorah who proved himself worthy in the fighting pit After almost five series of showing her potential Daenerys finally proved that she is worthy of taking back the Iron Throne After a nail biting fight in the pit we think and desperately hope that Jorah is now not only accepted back into the Queen s council but heading out of the Friend Zone We knew that he would win his time is not yet up However after a spectacular hijack by the Sons of the Harpy it looks like it is time for Daenerys to finally leave Meereen Now I haven t read the books so I am unfamiliar with the backstories of many of the characters as well as missing out on key details nevertheless when Daenerys mounted Drogon for the first time and flew out of the arena I was aware that this was a game changing moment in the series She finally took flight both physically and metaphorically If the look on Tyrion s face was anything to go by this is the woman to follow this is the true heir to the Iron Throne Now while Drogon was great fighting off all those Harpies he is really needed back over in Westeros at the Wall We re not sure quite yet what part the Dragons have to play in the story nor how or even when all the characters will meet but it seems critical that Daenerys and Jon finally team up For what can undo ice if not fire So we have one episode to go before we have to wait another year for season 6 We have come further than the books and now all the fans are in unexplored territory Our key predictions for episode 10 Cersei s time is up she has lived at the top too long and made too many enemies to come back from her current predicament I don t see her getting out of it unscathed Where is Bran Will he finally make an appearance and contribute something to Jon s fight I d like to see more of Brienne and Pod what part will they play in the clash between Stannis and House Bolton Honestly I really don t know who I would rather win that fight

  • Winter is coming and you'd better be ready (season 5, episode 8) | Infinite Ideas
waiting for for five seasons And after having watched the trailer several times hearing Daenerys finally declare I m not going to stop the wheel I m going to break the wheel was just too exciting However Tyrion is the angel on her shoulder offering her not just advice but a reality check Who is she going to rely on for allies when she finally mounts an assault on King s Landing Yes she may have a legitimate claim to the throne but there are several others who also believe this I won t lie my heart broke somewhat when my love Jorah was banished AGAIN from Meereen can that guy not catch a break Nevertheless in the cut throat business world of Game of Thrones and arguably the Square Mile knowing your strategy and who you can trust is essential if you re going to be successful climbing that corporate ladder The alliance between Daenerys and Tyrion is one of equal minds and equal nobility but Jon Snow s alliance with the Wildlings was one of necessity and desperation I think you ll agree that Jon s meeting with the Wildlings escalated quickly Never was an exodus more hurried or needed than in the final twenty minutes of the episode Perhaps Jon should have left some of the Dragon Glass back at Castle Black with Sam because now all he has to fight the White Walkers is his magic Valyrian steel sword who saw that coming which is great but not everyone has one of those In what was possibly the best sequence of Game of Thrones so far Jon proved himself not only as a worthy Lord Commander of the Night s Watch as someone who understands the need for diplomacy and negotiations but also as a leader on the battle field scrambling together an effective defence when it looked like there was no chance The name of Snow marked Jon as an outsider from the beginning forcing him to the Wall and cutting off many opportunities that he would have had if his birth had been legitimate However Jon s strength of character has on many occasions throughout the series enabled him to rise above his illegitimacy and prove himself as a worthy son of Ned Stark and a leader capable of leading much more than the Night s Watch In the past seasons the tipping point has come in episode nine so I will make sure that I am not alone to watch that one Though we re sure that Jon and Daenerys are more than capable of making their own strategies they might do well to read Game of Thrones on Business which could offer some helpful tips when winter is here Search Recent posts Alice in strategy land by Kate M Santon can help improve your business Career lessons from The Walking Dead be adaptable The pros and cons of self publishing your business book Zombie identification for beginners What would Rick do Ten

villages in order to root out wrongdoers and show the small folk what it means to cross him is not really the ruler a privileged member of the ruling class wants to identify with Shame really since Tywin has many qualities to recommend him He has a brilliant mind and can play most situations to his advantage When others might worry about how their actions will be perceived Tywin looks only to what is best for the advancement of the Lannister family which is great if you re on his side and deadly if you re not His ability to make decisions quickly and stick to them means he is great in times of crisis His major flaw arguably the one that got him killed is a lack of empathy While he s great at playing political games he s unable to recognise when people don t play the game when they react emotionally rather than acting strategically Because of this Tyrion surprised him twice first by demanding a trial by combat and second by doing the unthinkable and letting his arrows fly Mance Rayder man of the people who united disparate tribes in a common goal Now this would have made a much better answer Instead of identifying himself with a member of any ruling elite Cameron could have positioned himself as a plain speaking ruler who s truly democratic and loved by his followers though perhaps that s more in the realms of fantasy than Game of Thrones itself The Free Folk laugh at folk on the southern side of the wall for bending the knee to those whose rule is inherited rather than earned Instead they follow a king who has proved himself worthy of the title He s as clever as Tywin managing to unite more than 100 warring clans simply by making them see that something bigger and more important than their petty squabbles is coming their way and if they don t unite and head south of the wall they ll all end up dead or worse His ambitious plan to get round the Wall and take the Night s Watch by surprise would most likely have succeeded were it not for Jon Snow s infiltration of the Wildlings If he s able to enter into a coalition with Stannis Baratheon it could prove to be a winning alliance Daenerys Targaryen compassionate decisive and strategically adept Plus you know she s young and female so had Cameron given this answer he could have gained a few points with a section of the electorate which probably feels it has little in common with him Although Daenerys comes from a ruling elite the Targaryens having been kings of Westeros for the last 300 years she s in exile and unlike her brother does not take it for granted that she should rule Her qualifications for leading her people come from her abilities rather than her name As Jorah tells her when he first realises her potential You have a good claim a title a birthright but you have something more than that You have a gentle heart You would be not only respected and feared you would be loved Someone who can rule and should rule Centuries come and go without a person like that coming into the world Instead of crumbling when she loses her child and her husband she transforms herself into the Mother of Dragons we ve grown to love freeing slaves punishing the wicked and gathering a vast throng of supporters She s not perfect having shown an impatience with those who question her decisions that could tip into something more dictatorial But at the moment we love her just charismatic and strong she s the kind of leader we could only dream of having If David Cameron Ed Miliband or Nick Clegg would like any more tips on success the Game of Thrones way we have just the book for them available in plenty of time for the election it s not for you Nigel David Cameron dreams of the Iron Throne 20 February 2015 by Catherine Holdsworth in Business and finance Game of Thrones on Business The UK is gearing up for a big election in the next few months Nick Clegg s been locked up somewhere in the hope the electorate forgets about him Labour has launched its pink bus of feminism and Nigel Farage is trying not to look like a complete tool in the run up to voting day not that that seems to matter to the UKIP faithful Political rivalries are not new they have gone on for thousands of years and come hand in hand with deception backstabbing remember the Ides of March and defamation of character And you thought Game of Thrones was gory David Cameron s hospitality bill has just been released and shows that he spent nearly 2 000 of tax payers money on entertaining guests like the Queen and less justifiably Claudia Schiffer Perhaps Cameron is as much a fan of Game of Thrones as the rest of us it would certainly show him being in touch with his people and enjoys flamboyant gestures and indulgent dinner parties much like the characters do Some may comment that given some people pay up to 30 000 for their own wedding red or otherwise 2 000 for a whole year entertaining royalty and 1990s supermodels is actually a bargain However this bill is only for his private retreat Chequers Who knows how much more he has spent in Number 10 Surely the Queen is so used to lavish parties that she might prefer some humble fish and chips on her holiday The Tories to many people of the UK are the Lannisters of government overprivileged toffs who take it for granted that they should be in charge of the country so does that make Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband Stannis Baratheon and Daenerys Targaryen Only time will tell whether Dave will be elected

shows how corporate dynasties intermarry by sitting on each other s boards One result a small group effectively decides one another s compensation and we all know how executive pay has ballooned in the last 30 years at a far greater rate than profits have increased That s not criminal But scandals at Enron WorldCom and many others in which the performance of a supine board has been shown to be a contributing factor shows what can happen when intermarriage gives too much power with too little oversight to the King Joffreys of the corporate world Tim Phillips is author of Niccolo Machiavelli s The Prince Bertrand Russell s The Conquest of Happiness and Charles Mackay s Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds You might also like What Machiavelli knew and Robb Stark found out Why Game of Thrones is better than PowerPoint What Machiavelli knew and Robb Stark found out power is greatness 16 June 2014 by Rebecca Clare in Business and finance Entertainment Game of Thrones on Business Warning this blog contains spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 3 Episode 9 I couldn t watch the Game of Thrones episode featuring the Red Wedding on the day it was first broadcast For 24 hours I couldn t read the tweets or posts from my friends which went like this Friend WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT Other friend didn t see that coming Other friend I m glad no one told me that spoiler This stuff was hard to avoid The Red Wedding more or less crashed the internet So spoiler alert I managed to avoid knowing the full detail of the slaughter of heroic avenger Robb Stark and most of his remaining family I could boggle afresh at the mass murder of men women children born and unborn and dire wolves Next time someone describes a drunken wedding to me as carnage I ve got a handy visual reference But the internet crashing shock wasn t fundamentally about death There s loads of it on TV I recently watched Michael McIntyre s chat show His guests died every week It s because more spoilers here we ve invested in the revenge story of the Robb Stark and his family who in Hollywood narrative terms should clearly win their war against the Lannisters because that s the way things are done in fairy stories Therefore when they get cut into small chunks at the Red Wedding and fail epically as a result it s not the way things should happen Consider Robb Stark s wise and mostly good father who loved his kids so much that he even fathered an extra one while he was off having a war was murdered by the Lannisters for political reasons Therefore avenging him is a righteous quest Lannisters are weaselly snivelling cheats who make Shakespeare s Richard III look like Nelson Mandela The Starks have an attractive macho mud caked integrity They recall the great Wigan Rugby League team of the late 1980s not least because they sound a bit like them too As a result the Starks do not dress in silly foppish clothes or wear ridiculous little crowns Again not like the nasty Lannisters Many of the stories we read watch and tell the religions and beliefs we follow the news we watch and therefore the assumptions we make are based on the idea that virtue gets a reward We build these stories into a Great Man it s almost always a man narrative in which a few extraordinary people shape our destiny for the better This was first expressed by the historian Thomas Carlyle in 1841 in his book On Heroes Hero Worship and The Heroic in Histor y in which he wrote The history of the world is but the biography of great men Niccolo Machiavelli writing 300 years before him had a rather more nuanced appreciation of the Great Man When he wrote The Prince as a leadership manual for medieval rulers he knew two things first that it really helps to get stuff done if you are perceived as great He was less fussy about actual greatness or virtue perhaps because he d spent a lot of time around the Medici and Borgia versions of the Great Man The second thing as Machiavelli warns us towards the end of his celebrated book is that greatness is fundamentally about happenstance being the right person in the right place at the right time And so he undermined the Great Man Theory before Carlyle created it But we look for a neater story that great men are fulfilling a destiny The Starks must win because they deserve it It also helps us to take orders if we believe that we follow people because they are not just powerful but better than us in some way Great Man Theory underpins the modern idea of the hero CEO too There is an economic theory known as just desserts in the US just deserts which argues that the financial rewards of the additional value created by an innovation or business should flow to the person who created it Greg Mankiw one of the greatest economists alive today recently wrote a paper on this called Defending the One Percent It s easy to read and argues for example that innovators like Steve Jobs deserved their extraordinary rewards There are two arguments against this First of all Steve Jobs didn t design the products that Apple sells Innovation is a team effort involving thousands of deserving hard working people some of whom get minimum wage Secondly even if we think there might be a limited number of great men to reward who exactly are they Who gets the revenues from the iPhone Is it the person who invented the iPhone or the telephone or the one who invented electricity or who created outsourced manufacturing or even the internet Any one of them would have a legitimate claim on a piece of the
