  • IsComputerOn - First user review of Zeta RC1
a few problems during installation How come I can t really say others had no problems at all although from one guy I knew he couldn t install because he was using an USB mouse In total I have installed or let s say tried to install Zeta about 6 times before I realized that it was totally unnecessary because the installation stops after some 70 and just resumes after some time Pretty funny behaviour I d say The Installer in itself is awesome One can install several default combinations for example minimal internet ready and of course the full installation but also selecting and deselecting categories and individual applications is possible The installation lasts in between 5 and 20 minutes When the applications have been installed the MIME types are being registered Here there are still a few flaws such as ZIP files that aren t recognized automaticallyby the system That error shouldn t be difficult to fix The system The ready installed system is typically BeOS and anyone would feel right at home All applications are neatly ordened in the Zeta menu by category ah that s how I like it I always had to that manually with all of Zeta s predecessors Since I had already selected German as default language the entire system was naturally in German including Zeta native applications like JukeBox ZumL and TimeLiner Other applications without localization are of course still in English First positive impressions The SVG Tracker is hot The USB stack works immediately my USB ZIP drive even turns on The themes for Zeta are lovely to see that s no bloatware that is just a good enhancement of a custom desktop The wallpapers of several DeBUG menbers are also extremely cool kudos to Elwood and co It s stable

  • IsComputerOn - yellowTab News Mix.
been waiting for RC1 has gone into production The master has been sent to the press works and duplication is ongoing Second and this is great business news the German and English schools in Argentina will from now on provide it s students with Zeta to work on yT s CEO Torsten Linde had this to say We re very excited about this There has always been tremendous interest in BeOS and Zeta in Latin America where it seems people are more open to new things As a result every pupil at the participating schools will have individual access to a computer running Zeta This is pretty amazing considering that in Germany pupils quite often have to sit two or three to a computer This is great news indeed Last but definitely not least Paragon Software s Partition Manager is being ported to Zeta under a recent agreement between the two companies They will bring BFS support onto a commercial partition manager something that hasn t happened since the SE of Partition Magic some years ago Paragon will also distribute Zeta in Russia and the CIS So as you see a very good news mix yellowTab and it s members

  • IsComputerOn - Bugger (part 1): Italy
out there Starting off with Italy click on read more below Italy ITBug is a very active community with currently about 135 members The spinal system of this usergroup is the mailing list which is extremely active it has a few thousand replies each month ITBug is quite a new usergroup but has become so well organised by now that it for example holds exhibitions These exhibitions are also very focused on people not yet familiar with BeOS But ITBug reaches out to BeOS newbies not only by exhibitions This month for example an introducing article has appeared in Hacker Journal a renowned Italian hacker magazine The article features the history of Be from philosophy to demise the takeover by Palm and the current state of BeOS and its predecessors Additionally they have already released the second edition of their freely available BEYOND magazine the English translation of this edition appearing in the course of next week although there is a shout for more Italian to English translators Actually it s quite interesting reading through the magazine some time The magazine doesn t focus on BeOS alone but writes about a few other alternative operating systems as well Topics vary

  • IsComputerOn - Refraction
the picture virtually untouched the colour switch with the car is immensely sharp smoothing out bits of a picture e g if somebody has a pimple on his face you can more or less erase it and making a woman s breasts look smaller or bigger something they do a lot with model photographs and in magazines Despite all features of course Refraction is still heavily under development The R1 phase hasn t been reached yet and Frans would like to get just a couple of things done before it will be You can read more about that below When there was time for questions after the presentation several features people would really like to see added were mentioned Some of them may be added to Refraction R1 although making the application more optimized and stable something that has already drastically improved since the latest beta available for registered users has highest priority Frans agreed to answer a couple of questions for me Here s what we discussed IsComputerOn What were the reasons for Xentronix to cooperate with yellowTAB Frans van Nispen Well we have made a product interesting for their market In addition with Refraction we can give them exactly what they need for scanning support under Zeta with colour correction and all ICO Behind the scenes Xentronix is also powering the Sequel project Doesn t it then seem pretty strange to work together with a possible future business rival Frans We don t power the Sequel project anymore because we want to focus on our own products do things one thing at a time If Sequel becomes a serious product we might eventually consider making a port ICO Right now Xentronix leading product is Refraction started in 1999 Why did you focus more on Refraction and less on
