Stone NASCAR CBS Barnes and Noble Motorola and IBM Our award winning work has been featured in the New York Times and various web publications We are a group of diverse individuals but together we share one dream We wish to do great things and push our talents as far as they will take us WHO IS BEHIND DREAMSOCKET I guess it is best to start with letting you know who I am My name is Kenny Bunch I am a programmer dreamer and founder of Dreamsocket Growing up I created my own GI Joe vehicles out of scrap cardboard started a snowboard clothing company at 15 years old traveled the US with a skateboard and had a lot of fun just enjoying life I never would have guessed that I would end up as a programmer Yet it has always been part of my story If you had come to me when I was an 8 years old playing on an Adam personal computer I would have shown you some crazy BASIC games that I wrote with my older brother In college I would have tried to persuade you to test out the latest and greatest media applications I was programming in order to edit some skateboard videos Come to me now and I m essentially showing and saying the same thing Fate has given me direction and I ve followed with a smile So yes I have been extremely lucky to have been able to make a career out of something I love Coming from a small town where factory jobs were the norm my life is all a dream The fact that I started out as a developer at some of the biggest companies in the world CNN Cartoon Network and Bell South blows my mind I cherished each of those opportunities But when a dream calls you have to keep moving towards it When the time came to start a company I questioned if I was crazy doubted what I was doing and was scared out of my mind when I left My decision was always based on the fact that I had dreams that I wanted to accomplish and I had to follow them Why am I telling you all of this Quite simply because that is the foundation of Dreamsocket Even though we ve legally been a software company for over three years we don t view what we have as a company Everyone here views it as a destiny and a gateway to our dreams I know those are strong words but Dreamsocket really is a place built from the heart We have great respect for those around us and treat every opportunity as a gift We want to do great things in our work and in our actions DREAMSOCKET s PHILANTHROPIC PLEDGE Dreamsocket was founded with the aid and support of a great number of generous individuals We have been fortunate enough to have a community that has allowed us to thrive

  • Magic Strings vs Constants | Kenny Bunch
this The easiest and most common is to implement some sort of constant variable in your code to represent the string For example definition mx controls ListBox EVT change change myComponent addEventListener mx controls ListBox EVT change this In this example the dispatching object actually has a static property EVT change that is equal to the string and which is used to represent the string If you use this method and type in a property that doesn t exist you will get an error So with little effort you can have strict typing better debugging and more relaxation time Written by kbunch Posted in ActionScript 4 comments January 5 2005 4 03 pm JesterXL Yeah I ve been replacing attachMovie and contentPath with that popup Window PopUpManager createPopUp this Window true popup contentPath SomeForm instead becomes popup Window PopUpManager createPopUp this Window true popup contentPath SomeForm symbolName Since in the UIComponet you define those variables you can get syntax checking I hope EventDispatcher most to this model in the future as does all the framework Reply January 6 2005 8 00 am Kenny Bunch Good example Jesse That is one that people using components should recognize as a best practice I think Reply January 13 2005 10 34 am Byron Good reminder here I usually think of this as a better way to do things but didn t think about compile time vs runtime One thing it should probably be Magic Strings vs Constants since you really are talking about constants which are general term Also in most languages change is still strictly typed it s a string Reply January 13 2005 10 40 am Kenny Bunch Yea I meant to title it that but published befre noticing and didnt know if it would in effect make it a new

clean implementation that did only what they asked and was fine tuned to their needs It was the details that you don t see that made the custom write the correct decision and in the end I agree with their choice With all that said I think it is a compliment to Todd that they followed his design Though it made me feel odd with the project being so close his work it points out the validity of his component If CNN mirrors SlideShowPro then that should tell you the component rocks I wasn t able to use it here but I highly recommend it Written by kbunch Posted in ActionScript Flash General 2 comments July 10 2007 10 25 pm P J Onori It is indeed very nice work my only question is why their decision for Flash As someone who develops Flash applications I definitely understand the appeal and benefits of Flash Flex but I am beginning to think that the basic slideshow paradigm is more suited for implementation in advanced Javascript There are definitely times where Flash would be the better solution i e high motion rich interaction models etc but for 90 of slideshows out there Javascript can take care of it This is by no means a knock on your work it s great Rather it s a question on why you think the client decided to go the Flash route Any thoughts on that Reply July 11 2007 6 54 am Kenny Bunch PJ I think it s based on a few things First Flash is a lot quicker to develop and get the look and feel right Also you have the notion that a Flash asset is a single instance It makes it completely portable For instance if you want to snap that

images That s right folks the mantra here is designers are your friends Written by kbunch Posted in ActionScript Flash 4 comments July 10 2007 2 18 pm duga thats right designers are your friends without them there would be more templated ugly blogs like this one and we would all be using linux Reply July 11 2007 12 57 am chino Usually we show the progressbar 0 4 or 0 5 seconds after calling the load method So when you load again from the cache or if the loading is very fast the progressbar is not displayed Hope this helps Reply July 11 2007 7 04 am Kenny Bunch Chino The way I solve it is with onEnterFrame in a component like UILoader If you do checks for progress using it and test to make sure that you have positive values it works cleanly Delaying would work but it doesn t feel as clean to me It s probably a matter of preference Reply July 11 2007 11 43 am chino Yes two various approaches same goal same result it s just a matter of preference and perceived speed versus real speed Perceived speed is an important factor if the loading time is below 0 5 sec having no progress indicator feels faster than with some indicator as your designer noticed And it s always annoying to show a progressbar and hide it a few milliseconds after By the way I prefer delaying because it also solves the situation where you ll have to load very small amount of data with a fast connection wich will feel like loading from cache You got an interesting point about bytes loaded returned by theses classes Maybe the load progress event is fired with some weird values because even if your image

  • Project: Adult Swim Interactive Video | Kenny Bunch
do it This was due to having to convince people that video on the web is a viable thing and that it doesn t take away from their viewership but only adds to it I have had a strategy that I employed this year to overcome this By slowly introducing video to some companies and helping them understand it I first used this to get their video out there then used that to change their technologies and I m now using it to open doors for my ideas I would be lying if I didn t say that without YouTube scaring the pants off them they probably would have held tight to their beliefs of protecting and not releasing their content To that all I can say is thanks YouTube Project Concept Anyways enough talk right What is the concept Simply this particular project seeks to take DVD style experiences to the web with a twist Taking a video show and the related content images audio video or written articles that would be associated with a DVD I seeked to merge both into a linear narrative All of the related content is time coded to the video where the video serves as the linear driver story teller As you watch the content you are given subtle alerts for the associated content which you can then use to jump to and view In addition if you wish to browse those content elements you can do so and jump directly to them via a menu The video is then synced to the content The point is that you are always looking at content in context On top of that your context is never lost You are never driven completely away from the story and have to dive back to it The story always exists right there in visual sight As you move through the application you can shift your focus to what you want to pay attention to and the UI will visually shift around to let you know where you are going The application is completely dynamic so I can apply it to any linear video that I want Thanks and the Future For this project I can t thank my friend Chris enough for letting me run with the idea and providing me with such great input He started the game I showed him the ball and everyone involved rolled it It has been well received with my favorite comment being You just created the Flux capacitor to which AS turned to me and said If you can build the Flux capacitor I think I can get it in the budget for next year With the Flux capacitor in hand I d probably end up just going and betting on things like Biff which could go sour so for now I ll stick to moving my vision forward With all that said this is a first pass and isn t fully indicative of everything I have envisioned To note that

  • WMode causes Flash fullscreen mode not to work | Kenny Bunch
wasn t the one embedding the swf into the page I got the report that Fullscreen wasn t working on a project I m involved with and they had no clue why When I looked I noticed the WMODE then I ran test to verify that was the issue The reason that they put it in like that was that while on the page they actually had a DHTML overlay that could exist over the Flash element at times To do so the only way they could properly z order it was to use the WMODE When they popped up the player to fullscreen they reasoned that only the Flash element would go fullscreen thinking that it was detaching itself from the browser I didn t know of the overlay they were doing or their setting of WMODE though I realized the issue when I saw it but it points out that even experienced developers may not realize that Since I didn t see it in the docs that you all have posted for now I would say document it For the future if possible it would be nice if the swf recognized the wmode while in the browser rendering space and when it was set to go fullscreen it detached itself In this case the render space would be dynamic vs statically defined upfront Thanks for the followup John Reply December 28 2006 8 53 am John Dowdell Got it thanks for the background Kenny It sounds sort of unfair that they called you back after you delivered the job considering that they could see it work untill they edited the WMODE argument I did some quick searches in LiveDocs but wasn t sure which page would be best do you have a candidate page for this edit tx

session 50 50 6 FFFFFF session flag to swf so addVariable FLASHVARS hasSession document cookie indexOf session exists 1 true false so write sessionDiv set session document cookie session exists A working example can be seen here Written by kbunch No comments Posted in ActionScript Flash General June 13 2006 MouseWheelManager Class OVERVIEW Flash allows you to capture the events from a mouse wheel The event fires with two params delta Number scrollTarget MovieClip In most cases you only want one thing to respond to this event For example if you have two listboxes with scrollbars you only want the one that your mouse is over to respond to the event You could accomplish this by having each element listen for the wheel event and do it s own check to determine whether it should handle it or not However if you did this everytime the event fired all the handler checks would have to run In the case of having 50 elements listening that would be 50 if checks which is inefficient COMPONENT TECHNIQUE If you dig into the Flash component classes you will find they implement the check rather intelligently In mx core ScrollView a single listener is implemented The handler evaluates the second param scrollTarget to determine which component should handle the event It does this by starting at the MovieClip target passed in and working up the parent chain until it finds a MovieClip that is a ScrollView instance Once it finds that instance it makes the instance dispatch a scroll event SIMPLE SOLUTION I created a MouseWheelManager class that has the same intelligence as the ScrollView but is a lot simpler to use To utilize it with an Class or Object instead of making that class subclass ScrollView doesn t rely on additional classes the class just has to have a onMouseWheel handler and register itself and associated MovieClip with the manager Dreamsocket author Kenny Bunch example import com dreamsocket managers MouseWheelManager var o Object o onMouseWheel function p delta Number p startingTarget MovieClip Void trace works MouseWheelManager getInstance register foo mc o class com dreamsocket managers MouseWheelManager private static var k instance MouseWheelManager private var m targets Object private function MouseWheelManager this m targets Mouse addListener this public static function getInstance MouseWheelManager if MouseWheelManager k instance null MouseWheelManager k instance new MouseWheelManager return MouseWheelManager k instance public function register p tgt MovieClip p instance Object Void target found dispatch event this m targets testTarget onMouseWheel p delta p startingTarget Written by kbunch 5 Comments Posted in ActionScript Flash November 7 2005 AS3 Visualizing Video In an attempt to start using AS3 and Flexbuilder I created a simple module based in part on Brendan Dawes Cinema Redux processing experiment that visualizes a movie by taking snapshots of frames on a supplied sample rate It uses those snapshots to create a visual mosaic image which allows you to see the use of light color and transition throughout the movie Continue reading Written by kbunch 6 Comments
