    2 years in good standing of a bachelor s or master s degree they served in the U S Armed forces for at least 2 years and if discharged they must show they were discharged honorably Removing the conditions eventually leads towards applying for citizenship the American dream to many immigrants Among the key features of the law are provisions that allow for extensions of permanent residency as certain benchmarks are met such as enrollment in college or enlistment in the military Several states have also passed their own versions of the DREAM Act which focus on tuition and financial aid for state universities Obama Defers Deportation of Certain Immigrant Youths On June 15 2012 the Department of Homeland Security announced a policy that will defer action to undocumented youth Deferred action is not a change in the law nor is it amnesty nor does it give immunity and it definitely does not give permanent legal status in the U S What Deferred action does is it stops the unjust deportation of immigrants and grants them work authorization In order to qualify for the Deferred Action the young immigrants will have to meet the following criteria must have arrived to the U S before the age of 16 the arrival to the U S must have been before June 15 2012 and the individual must have resided in the U S continuously for five years before June 15 2012 currently be in school graduated from high school have a GED or be an honorably discharged veteran of the U S Coast Guard or the U S Armed Forces have not been convicted of a felony offense a significant misdemeanor offense three or more non significant misdemeanors or otherwise pose a threat to national security or public safety must not be
