    some states finding that parents have a duty to contribute to a dependent child s ongoing education State requirements take into account the age of majority in the state which ranges from 18 to 21 years old and is typically when child support payments cease to be court ordered In cases where the child has not reached the age of majority the court may order the noncustodial parent to pay college support in addition to the regular child support payments The court will consider factors such as the financial status of the parents finances of child family s standard of living before and after the divorce if the parents agreed to pay for child s college before the divorce child s aptitude and preparedness for college and the age of the child at the time of the divorce Calculating Child College Support When calculating college support in addition to tuition costs courts may consider these other expenses travel to and from school room and board books materials health and dental insurance Parents may agree in writing to provide college support and specify its terms If the parents want the agreement acknowledged and enforced by the court they should address the same college support terms through a court order A divorce settlement agreement or court order may specify variables such as the amount that will be paid and by which parent for how long and to whom the custodial parent the child the school Also the court may impose obligations on the child to maintain a certain grade point average provide the parents with reports of grades and course performance attend a particular school attend school for a required period of time and successive terms semesters attend school full time and provide proof that courses are being attended Share this information
