has been a game design mentor to me for the past two years More on that as things progress too Posted in Game Dev Leave a comment Our Abstract Society Posted on January 10 2007 by lion I went camping for two weeks in Ethiopia with my family during this past Christmas holiday There is a lot that I would like to write about Ethiopia that I will save for future posts that may not be written What I would like to talk about today is a sense that many people get when they travel to countries outside of their developed nation It just feels so real over there When people say this they are referring to a sense of immediacy that is enchanting a reality that has been obscured by the abstraction resulting from modernization I don t want to sound critical of modernization it is what we have worked so hard to achieve and what has allowed us to achieve so much However to consider it as concrete would be false and I think that it is important to be aware of the diversity of existence that exists in the world Some ways in which our lives are abstract 1 We have no idea where the products we consume come from When we buy chicken it is a bloodless breast sandwiched between cellophane and yellow Styrofoam In rural and developing parts of the world you buy or raise the live chicken and kill it yourself 2 People are statistics casualties are numbers when we go to war we kill with the push of a button not the swinging of a machete In short much of our perception and action is impersonal 3 We are protected from the elements by air conditioning and insulation 4 We don t walk By the way if you live near a ghetto try walking through it one day instead of driving around it its amazing 5 Our idea of philanthropy is charity We buy a ticket to guilt free lane via donating money to organizations who use it to live in large villas and drive Land Cruisers 6 We believe what others report about our world instead of seeing it for ourselves 7 We don t have to worry about predators or disease or getting bombs dropped on us This is maybe why 9 11 was such a shock to Americans Some people need to worry about how they will survive but we just worry about how to get our raise or rather our way of surviving is by having jobs and wages and the like and not by avoiding crocodiles bombs or famine So 9 11 if for a moment made a lot of people worry about survival in this other more immediate sense I found it very hard to answer the question What do you do for a living How do you describe video game design to someone who has never played a video game I don t actually make anything physical I work in a world of conceptual interaction that is eventually represented by code that is an abstraction of machine language I think that being an options trader might provide a similar conundrum These are occupations that are only viable under the protective prosperous umbrella of modernization I must admit that I feel guilt at times knowing that a large part of my occupation is problem solving and that there are more important problems to solve in the world than issues of game balance or usability I console myself by proclaiming a desire to create media that will illuminate issues of moral relativity personal growth social injustice and the like to a mainstream audience Ok in summary we make many assumptions about the world without using our powers of observation and contemplation to see things as they really are Immersive travel not staying in 5 star hotels for your entire vacation having conversations with locals eating with locals etc is a great way to gain a shift in perspective as informed by your experience of an existence that is at once foreign and familiar If we can see more clearly and empathize with others then the decisions and actions in our life can be more informed I can t mandate the occasional exposure to a more gritty reality but those who have stepped outside of their comfort zone are forever changed and speak fondly of the experience So if I can t mandate then I shale suggest Please challenge your perception of what is real and please be open to new experiences and ideas Posted in Philosophy Travel 7 Comments lion I have been eagerly awaiting Okami Clover s new game that got a near perfect score from Famitsu and was finally able to pick up a copy on the US release date earlier this week I had a few impressions that I wanted to share with my apparently non existent readership The Good The first thing that anyone mentions about Okami is its visual style It is absolutely gorgeous Clover engineers and artists were able to fairly convincingly make this 3D game look like a living Sumi e Japanese watercolor painting This technique makes some of the faces hard to read but we ll forgive them because the flora is outstanding The scenes where massive

these it doesn t take a yoga master to feel the strange energy or chi in the air For myself I have been feeling lots of this strange chi ever since I arrived in Sri Lanka A friend of ours who is very spiritual says that it is from all of the fighting in the north of Sri Lanka Actually I believe her Negative energy and positive energy as well have infinite chain reaction effects In addition to this televising negative or angry emotions actually amplifies the effects of this kiai I have in truth been almost unable to eat I also feel a very hot or angry chi through my whole body As I had mentioned to my father this morning although this act of violation is media worthy and poignant to the status of the world view of westerners this tragedy is not as big or any more important than the many sufferings that go un noticed throughout the world ethnic cleansing in Africa for instance Yes I feel an unbearable compassion for this tragedy but such an act also serves to bring to my awareness the suffering happening all over the world Suffering and images we usually try to block from our minds Yesterday s events on American soil are not unique In fact tragedy is as much a part of life as joy Indeed it can even be stated that tragedy is joy and that joy is tragedy and that these are constructs of our minds unable to exist without one another But for us who are unenlightened to this truth me included it is clear that our perception of tragedy and joy have noticeable effects on our lives Even though thousands of lives have been claimed by this terrorism how many more lives will be claimed by malnutrition cancer aids and car accidents Indeed suffering is all pervasive But just as there is no end to suffering there is no end to joy as well I would like to end by quoting from the Hagakure a samurai manual It is a good viewpoint to see the world as a dream When you have something like a nightmare you will wake up and tell yourself that it was only a dream It is said that the world we live in is not a bit different from this There is nothing outside the thought of the immediate moment A famous Chinese monk is said to have awaken from a dream where he was a butterfly At that moment he was unable to say whether he was a Butterfly dreaming that he was a Monk or a Monk who was dreaming that he was a Butterfly Posted in Philosophy 1 Comment Stop Here Posted on July 1 2000 by lion left right without exception all directions are beautiful Posted in Poetry Leave a comment The Tao of the Dow Posted on December 4 1999 by lion Confucianism and Taoism Final Paper Autumn 1999 W Thomas Grové In this paper I will draw a parallel between Taoism and capitalism This will be accomplished by comparing the origins ideology and social impact of Taoism with the origins and social impact of the stock market as represented by the Dow Jones Industrial average and the nature of good investment ideology Taoism emerged from the sea of philosophy that had been evolving and responding to itself or its new and refined philosophies in ancient China Much of this philosophy was expounded by and intended for the literate governing and financially advantaged members of society Out of this chaotic mix that was attempting to find order in society arose a sect who wrote down their ideals which would be added to and later given the name of the Lao Tzu or the Tao Te Ching Taoist thought is some of the first metaphysical thought of China In that way the Tao Te Ching does not aim to establish social rules and structure in the way that Confucianism did although it definitely paints actions and personalities that would affect society The Tao Te Ching instead offers an alternate perspective on the world to those perspectives offered before Proposing a more passive role in life and an ideal that is more illusive Taoism encourages the reader to observe the flow of the Tao and from the later view of Chuang Tzu to view situations from an impartial and high vantage point This illusive ideal is perhaps best illustrated in the first chapter of the Tao Te Ching always rid yourself of desire in order to observe its secrets But always allow yourself to have desires in order to observe its manifestations The stock market at first was a playing field reserved only for the elite However keeping information secret is like holding water in a canvas bag it s bound to drip Before long everyone was playing the stock market but the information on what a company was worth was still kept only to industry insiders At this point a man entered the scene whose background was representative of Lao Tzu s lowly uncarved block Charles Dow came from humble origins yet managed to transform the world of investing more than any high powered money manager or investment banker TMF Charles Dow who didn t complete secondary school worked on a farm performing menial labor jobs from the age of 6 to 18 Dow went on to form a company with two partners in 1882 Dow Jones Co They released a daily paper called The Customer s Afternoon Letter which printed consolidated stock tables and quarterly and annual information regarding company financials Dow s publication leveled the playing field between the Wall Street elite and the individual investor TMF The Customer s Afternoon Letter later became the Wall Street Journal the preeminent publication of capitalism Without stirring abroad One can know the whole world Lao Tzu XLVII By knowing a part one can have a good idea of what the whole is like Another aspect

man does he then try to disguise himself concealing the evil and showing off the good in him But what is the use For other people see him as if they see his very heart Therefore the superior man always makes his will sincere The only part that I would really modify here is in the last sentence It was probably a translation mistake or something I would change it to say The superior man s will is always sincere Otherwise you run into a paradox if the man is making his will sincere than it isn t really sincere right This statement is echoed I m probably the one echoing in the Analects of Confucius This mention of sincerity is in regards to ritual very important for Confucius specifically the ritual of a three year mourning period for the death of one s parent I can t find this passage I know it s in there so I m just going to paraphrase it One of Confucius disciples seeks some advice His mother has just died and he wants to know if he must adhere to the ritual of mourning for three years He asks isn t mourning for one year just as good as mourning for three Confucius answers If you would truly feel comfortable sincere in your action to mourn for just one year than do it But a good man wouldn t feel right about this After all of the years that your parent spent raising you there aren t enough years left in your life to mourn for them yourself properly But three years is the custom I think that the overall lesson from this passage isn t a prescribed time length of mourning Sure Confucius is a big proponent for following ritual to bring about social harmony but that s not the message either It isn t important how long you mourn it s whether or not you are feeling a loss If you just go through the motions then you re not really mourning So why is the superior man s will sincere Because it is his nature He does what he does because it feels GOOD Why does it feel good I think that Mencius a Confucian wandering advice giver and a book offers a nice perspective on this Mencius believed that a good ruler would recognize that the wants and needs of everyone else in the empire were the same wants and needs that he had If the emperor or feudal lord could extend their desires to those of the common people than there would be harmony and strength in the empire Why Because by doing this the emperor would recognize that the other and the self were more or less the same That in helping others he would be helping himself This works on a physical and emotional level Physically if the people are in good health and treated with respect as the emperor would like to be than they
