That satisfied me in more ways than I care to admit Other games in this category Call of Duty Modern Warfare Counter Strike Battlefield 5 Max Payne Nothing on earth managed to prepare me for my first time playing this game I was blown away by the Film Noir atmosphere the moody soundtrack the incredible plot and of course the Bullet Time mechanic You felt like Neo from the Matrix movies leaping into a room full of bad guys all in slow motion You took your sweet time at taking shots while bullets catapulted around you This was some serious innovation back in its day And the tragic tale of Max an undercover cop hell bent on revenge against violent gangsters crime syndicates and shady corporations The story was exquisitely told through comic book cut scenes that made you feel like part of a blockbuster movie The sequels were equally amazing with each one taking center stage with every release But it was that first game that literally bulldozed the way for real storytelling in action games making it still memorable today Other games in this category Bioshock 4 Fallout New Vegas The first Fallout game was the first RPG I had ever played It was the illuminated wasteland with its colorful inhabitants the deadly open world and the intriguing storyline that reeled me in When Fallout 3 was released it changed much of the game s mechanics From a once isometric view the game turned to first person perspective so you could view the horrors of the wasteland first hand The combat system changed to real time putting an emphasis on quick action and careful preparation The quest system became similar to The Elder Scrolls where you could completely abandon the main quest and set off to explore the post nuclear world While Fallout 3 was a terrific game Fallout New Vegas really struck a chord with me The game s post apocalyptic wild west atmosphere was incredible The story of warring factions seeking to carve up New Vegas was felt throughout the entire game Even if you decided to ignore the main quest the threat of war was always looming in the horizon no matter how hard you tried to escape it But while the game tackled serious subject matter it did so with grace wit and humor It always managed to keep the mood light and somewhat cheerful despite the many hardships the game threw at you Other games in this category The Elder Scrolls series 3 Spec Ops The Line Over the last few years I ve been preaching about this game to everyone and anyone who had a pair of functioning ears Spec Ops is a game that will shake you to the core It will chew you up and it will spit you out What starts off as a generic shooter about a team of American soldiers caught in the aftermath of a cataclysmic sandstorm in Dubai quickly plunges into the bowels of madness Although Spec Ops is a short game barely six hours of gameplay it explores the deepest and darkest aspects of human nature during times of war It achieves this by making the player walk a mile in the shoes of the game s protagonist Capitan Walker He s a fascinating character that grows and evolves during the campaign into something that by the end of the game you begin to despise At the same time however you must continue playing to find out the bitter end of this grim tale Needless to say it will shock and disturb you 2 Planescape Torment I consider Planescape Torment to be the zenith of western RPGs It s a game that took what Baldur s Gate and the Fallout series previously started and simply perfected it While the gameplay and graphics didn t age incredibly well it s the marvelous plot and narrative that make this game a jewel in the western RPG genre The game takes you on a ride in a dark fantasy realm and explores the question What can change the nature of a man You play as the Nameless One an amnesiac who awakens from death in a morgue in a strange dimensional city filled with angels demons undead and other fantasy creatures You set out to explore your past with the help of some of the best written characters I ve ever encountered in a game The plot twists and turns where each new revelation about your past opens new questions and mysteries to explore The plot builds itself up to an astounding ending which steals the spotlight in RPG games even by today s standards 1 Half Life 2 Yes it s Half Life 2 The first Half Life was a remarkable experience It was the tram ride at the onset Then it was the resonance cascade and travelling to an alien planet and facing the illusive G man Half Life revolutionized the FPS genre with exquisite graphics brilliant puzzles atmosphere and shiny new gameplay mechanics When announcements for the second game began to surface everyone in the PC gaming world used every 4 letter word in the book The promise was overwhelming and everybody waited patiently After several snags along the way with hackers code theft and other delays the game finally came out I preordered almost a year before the release I waited at dawn outside the store to grab my copy along with other hungry enthusiasts When I finally started the game it required something called Steam to run it I literally vanished from the face of the earth for some 24 hours until I finished the game Every little feature in Half Life 2 felt almost magical in those years The vehicle sequences the gravity gun the Ravenholm sections that still scare the hell out of me the fantastic graphics the soundtrack and the superb characters Alex Vance takes Lara Croft any day of the week the long climb on the Citadel and
