trip to this cemetery to see this unusual sights I ll just have to go back really soon to get those other shots again One of the first things I did in Paris was go to the little CD record store on Rue Simon le Franc that specializes in older diva types An American fellow named Rei Muroji formerly Robert who has lived the past 35 years in Japan invited me to the famous concert hall The Olympia to see the beloved French singer Mirielle Mathieu I had always wanted to go to The Olympia Many great stars have triumphed there Judy Garland Edith Piaf Liza Minnelli and so on It was fascinating to watch the audience arrive including Mlle Mathieu s longtime couturier Christian Lacroix The Olympia itself is rather shabby but the audience didn t care They stood up after every song Rei took these photos of the concert Her simple French language version of You Don t Send Me Flowers Anymore was the high point of the evening for me The day after my return from Europe I performed at Bette Midler s 60th birthday party along with Nathan Lane Rosie O Donnell 4 of the original Harlettes and Bette s husband Martin von Haselberg Candace Bergen Liz Smith Toni Basil David Bowie Iman Jann Wenner and scads of other fab types were there I snapped Bette and Scott Wittman dancing to the score of the Fellini film Juliet of the Spirits at the dazzling fete on the Lower East Side The party was at a former synagogue The Angel Orensanz Foundation on Norfolk Street and among the guests were Barbara Walters and Andre Leon Talley Also on hand were Jenifer Lewis and Katie Couric and playwright John Guare with his back to camera Ula Hedwig Joy
