openly throughout the rest of her life without any issues In fact one night when Blossom had the flu I stayed overnight to sit with her since the new nurse on the floor complained that it was a real pain to have the added work of keeping an eye on Blossom I wrote In the morning she was amazingly better much to the frazzled nurse s astonishment I did speak face to face with Gene Raymond about this whole scene he was very nervous when confronted and tried to deny his involvement but I detailed all the specifics I had been told No telling though whether that s why the ban was lifted The full version of this article can be found in this book Perhaps you can understand why when the pictorial book was published I decided to look like I was towing the party line so as not to be sued and also not to scare off those who might come forward and speak to me as a result of this book being published So I only hinted that there was more than met the eye This book filled with innocuous text still had two shockers in it for which I was attacked anyway First I had the nerve to publish Jeanette s accurate birthdate Sure you may notice that other authors wrote in pre 1973 Hollywood books that Jeanette was possibly born in 1901 1903 1907 etc But the difference was that MY information came RIGHT FROM JEANETTE S SISTER I was not using the nonsense 1907 birthdate that the fan club claimed and that even Gene Raymond used on Jeanette s crypt And I was stating 1903 as FACT not rumor or assumption Eek Horrors The shock of it I was called a liar and received hate letters from several of those fan club people See below for evidence of my awful transgression To not alienate Gene Raymond the fan club or anyone else I wimped out and presented the happy Jeanette Gene marriage How else to learn more from this camp without being a double agent And yet I couldn t stomach not having the truth in there somewhere and so I shouted as loudly as I could on the final pages of this book because in the case of Jeanette and Nelson the pictures tell it all do they not And Nelson s pain close up And in case you can t read the text here are the very last words of this book Later that day when television reporters interviewed him reality sank in and Nelson grieved I didn t know she was dying I ll never get over it Friends claim he never did Another round of attacks and hate letters and threats I made many enemies for writing those carefully chosen words Laughable isn t it When I did press for the pictorial book I had to continue to be very careful As revealed in Sweethearts Ann Eddy asked Emily West to show up at my radio interview with Thomas Cassidy To make sure that I quote didn t spill the beans Which Emily did Sat across from me and stared me down daring me to open my mouth Well folks I was still a wimpy coward and my voice quaked in that interview as I said nothing of importance But even in a newspaper interview I tried to hint again at the truth saying that the marriage between Jeanette and Gene ENDURED all their lives As I had hoped post publication new people came forward with information several who knew that I knew and so felt freer to speak openly I met Diane Goodrich at my first Jeanette fan club and to my surprise she was NOT afraid to talk She had known Nelson through her father and she had several lengthy conversations with Nelson alone during a period of time when his life was at a low point He and Jeanette were broken up and he was re examining how it had all gone south what he did to contribute to the scene but mostly how he had loved Jeanette despite everything stuck with her through thick and thin but finally she dumped him She was through with him and now much time had passed and he was finally coming to terms with it and trying to move on with his life This was August 1951 by the way Over the next few years Diane and I worked together researching me generally dealing with the pro Jeanette folks and Diane meeting up with the pro Nelson ones Due to the climate of the times there was no way I could keep my promise to Blossom in a timely way to get the full story out even if I fully understood it which of course I didn t But we also had no support from our sources no one would go public they assured us they would disavow and threaten to sue if they were quoted Actually Marie Gerdes formerly Waddy who once ran Jeanette s fan club was a gentle sweet lady and she was perhaps the lone person who offered support but warned me of the heartache I faced if I was foolish enough to try and buck the establishment So bottom line Diane and I would gather up the latest information from our sources and then go over with Blossom for her take on it We made the rounds seeking out older Hollywood folk and others who would talk In June 1977 there was a huge dust up at a screening of New Moon with the Jeanette fan club The Nelson fans were defiant enough to clap after Nelson s singing solo At which point the movie projector was shut off and Clara Rhoades a schoolteacher by profession stood up and gave the Nelson supporters a stern lecture Which resulted in several of them walking right out of the room Including Diane Goodrich I hesitated still a

and trotted back after her purse She got into the car and when Nelson came out he got into the same car The woman I talked to pointed out that she must have been backstage the whole time because She wasn t dressed up enough to have been out front She said My friend and I always felt sure that was Jeanette MacDonald There were rumors that they loved each other Recounting this now all I can do is smile The last anecdote is possibly the most touching though it is vastly different from the other two One of my lectures was at the Guggenheimer Nursing Home in Lynchburg and I had never been there before Nobody told me and I at this point in my experience was not savvy enough to ask that the residents there were extremely to use their term low functioning This means there were many people there with Alzheimer s and dementia nearly everyone was wheelchair bound and more than a few of these people didn t seem to know I was there My lecture is full of facts and history and statistics and I knew at once that this wouldn t do for this group To give them the most enjoyment I needed to simplify I decided to skip the lecture and show pictures and videos and play music that would be familiar to them and lo and behold that ended up making a lot of people happy that afternoon One woman was wheeled in about ten minutes after I had started The nurse parked her chair very close to me the only space that was left and she touched my arm She won t even know she s here she told me She hasn t said a word ever since she was moved in Sometimes she responds to music but she doesn t talk I nodded and continued with what I was doing Several of the residents enjoyed the Andrews Sisters and a few smiled and pointed at the screen when I showed Fred and Ginger When I got to Jeanette and Nelson I decided to show Will You Remember from Maytime Just as they were getting into the song the wildest thing happened From the chair parked so close to me there was motion The tiny frail woman in the chair lifted her head She never opened her eyes but in the smallest voice she sang Ah love is so sweet in the spring time when blossoms are fragrant in May Well I was teary in about two seconds as was the nurse The whole way home that day and every time I ve thought of it since I ve been forced to marvel at the power of those two beautiful voices and the way they touch people That woman hadn t said a word in months She wasn t responding to anyone around her but somewhere deep inside the magic of Jeanette and Nelson touched her On some level she knew

any decent human being would feel when presented with facts such as we have in the Jeanette Nelson story Katie s blog link is here and the video is below July 8 2014 Nelson Eddy The most miserable day of my life Jeanette MacDonald s funeral maceddy Announcements by Sharon Rich Jeanette funeral Sweethearts book 0 Comments Above is a screenshot of some video footage showing Nelson Eddy arriving to the funeral of Jeanette MacDonald January 18 1965 Looking wan and grief stricken he walks ahead and catches up to his current singing co star Gale Sherwood and his spouse Ann Franklin One other quick shot shows him biting his quivering lip Among the various film clips of this funeral or from other sad moments captured of him on film one notices that he bites his lip when trying to keep his emotions in control An amazing lengthy clip of raw TV footage from Jeanette s funeral was discovered and made available for viewing by our friends Katie and Angela Once again we are grateful to them for presenting this footage as it has not been seen since 1965 Katie has written a perceptive analysis of the funeral and its footage on her blog More details and the before and after preparations can be found in the book Sweethearts However after watching the video clip below several times there are many things to watch for The pallbearers shown above carry Jeanette MacDonald s casket from the chapel to the car To the side behind them are recognizable honorary pallbearers Lauritz Melchior and Jack Oakie At the very end of the group is Nelson who comes out last after Lloyd Nolan Lauritz Melchior and Jack Oakie You can see him way in the back The fact that Nelson lingered and was the last one to come out of the chapel and the reasons why is discussed in great detail in Sweethearts The chapel doors are closed by the man behind Nelson and Jack Oakie who comes from near Melchior to walk around to Nelson s other side Lauritz Melchior is the first to go directly to Nelson and offer condolences Nelson even smiles a bit and then the others close ranks around Nelson and do the same One man not only shakes Nelson s hand but puts his other hand over Nelson s a compassionate gesture Another one who we don t see clearly must say something kind to Nelson because he nods his head in response This gesture of caring to Nelson s feelings is just amazing if one didn t know the circumstances one would look at this video and be certain that Nelson Eddy was the widower Here are thousands of fans watching and listening to the funeral service piped through loudpeakers with Jeanette s records singing Nelson called it a circus Jeanette s beloved sister Blossom is the first to exit from the side with Nanette the granddaughter of the oldest MacDonald sister Elsie Note Blossom is

considered for The Great Waltz maceddy Jeanette Nelson Jeanette MacDonald Miliza Korjus An interesting excerpt from the DVD review today in the New York Post Warner Archive also recently released another much requested composer biopic The Great Waltz 1938 one of several films about Johann Strauss Jr who s attracted the attention of filmmakers as diverse as Alfred Hitchcock Walt Disney and Andrew L Stone This black and white MGM epic is officially credited to French director Julien Duvivier in his Hollywood debut the same year his Pepe Le Moko was remade as Casbah but major portions are known to have been reshot by Victor Fleming and Josef von Sternberg on orders from Louis B Mayer making it an interesting puzzle for auterists This one announces in an opening title that it doesn t pretend to be an accurate depiction of Strauss life Instead we re offered up a romantic triangle straight out of The Great Ziegfeld with the composer Flemish actor Ferdinand Gravey borrowed from Warners which had renamed him Gravet and announced for an MGM version of Scaramouche that would never get made his adoring wife Louise Rainer fresh from her Oscar win for Ziegfeld and a flirtatious soprano Polish born Miliza Rhymes with Gorgeous Korjus who helps further Strauss career ambitions This relatively star light casting for MGM the studio had considered the unlikely duo of Clifton Webb and Jeanette MacDonald may have been the reason for the last minute decision to scrap costly Technicolor for a movie that still looks very very expensive As in Rhapsody the story is but something to hang Strauss melodies on and here they get superb arrangements by Dimitri Tiomkin and Englsh lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II The most famous or notorious sequence quite possibly directed at least in part by Fleming has Strauss spontaneously inspired to create Tales from the Vienna Woods while riding with his soprano through the woods in a carriage the driver is ubiquitous character man Christian Rub briefly seen as the janitor who breaks the news of his teacher s death to Gershwin in Rhapsody Von Sternberg is known to have re shot the film s climactic sequence Mrs Strauss races to the Vienna opera house to confront her errant husband and his mistress who she knows are planning to run away Mrs Strauss Rainer at her most smilingly tearful gives the guilty couple her blessing which she also knows will stop them in their tracks Somehow this inspires Strauss to write The Blue Danube a nice montage also reportedly directed by Von Sternberg This film ends with an unfortunate epilogue Fleming set 43 years later when Emperor Franz Josef an unhappy looking Henry Hull honors Strauss who like everyone else is wearing old age makeup That is all except for the glass shattering Ms Korjus who is superimposed in her youthful glory singing her heart out at the climax Korjus was Oscar nominated for her Hollywood debut but MGM scrapped plans to star her in
