  • K.T. Ernshaw Interview – Jeanette MacDonald & Nelson Eddy Home Page
Jeanette but his whole life was still ahead of him and the future seemed rosy We know that you two met and hit it off We can also do the math and understand that there was a bit of an age difference between you two A I had never expected that this would be more than a wonderful interlude He was after all a famous movie star and his destiny was elsewhere And I knew this There is no way I can describe that time and explain the glorious time that it was for me I later came to realize that it was a very special time for him as well He had been having furious rows with Jeanette and she was off again on again about marrying him and he was in need of something quite different In fact it set the pattern for the later relationship for the rest of our times together Over the years I kept track of what happened to him We did not communicate even though I had a phone number that would reach him if the one possible contingency had occurred He was prepared to face that and take care of me had that happened It did not When the word of his marriage came out I was shaken but I could only hope that it would be a happy one It was some years before I learned that it was not Q So Nelson did not consider that he was sterile and was in fact perfectly capable of fathering children A Yes Q After that initial time you didn t see Nelson until 1942 A I was in Los Angeles With the war heating up I looked for work Note Ms Ernshaw got a job next door to the Vine Street Playhouse the broadcast location of the Lux Radio Theater Eventually she ran into Nelson their initial exchange was witnessed by her boss Jerry I found my boss watching me He asked me if I knew Nelson Eddy I explained that I knew him but had not seen him for some time Then he shook me when he said It was a damned shame about the baby When he realized I didn t have a clue what he was talking about he told me about it It seems the story was well known to the Hollywood gossip mill Apparently Jeanette started to hemorrhage on the set of Sweethearts and Nelson had the presence of mind to wrap her up in a blanket and have one of the studio drivers take them to the hospital as it would be quicker than waiting for an ambulance That would have been the end of it except that he had to call the studio and send them to find Gene because the hospital needed the husband of record to sign the release Nelson remained with her and Gene when located was more or less a fifth wheel Of course the hospital staff put two and two together There were plenty of rumors already linking the two of them By nightfall everybody had figured out that it was Nelson s child that she had lost Nelson was in such a state that even Louis Mayer backed off and left it alone excpet for his usual calls to the newspaper publishers to keep it out of the papers I was at first stunned and then I realized what it must have cost him That he had always loved her he had told me from the start I also realized what it said about his marriage so I asked Jerry about it It was also common gossip that both their marriages were a disaster Later I learned more about that but at the time I was torn between hurt and compassion Note Ms Ernshaw related this story several years after the first edition of Sweethearts was published Details of that miscarriage had already been well documented by among others Bill Tuttle and Fred Phillips of MGM and Jeanette s sister Blossom Ms Ernshaw s account was an indicator of how little really remained a secret during those studio years at least within the Hollywood city limits After the war I soon realized Nelson was also in a state of flux as far as his career was concerned He had been able to put things on hold with the pressures of the war now he was trying to make decisions about his life He was concentrating on broadcasting and seemed to be doing shows a couple times a week while I was just as busy at theatre school There was such a shortage of women as most students were ex G I s and naturally at that time men We women were much in demand and on several occasions I was doing three shows at the same time rehearsing two and appearing in a third It was good training for my later time in repertory in England When I did see him I knew immediately if there had been trouble with his wife or a disagreement with Jeanette The differing schedules made for some strange meeting times When he was recording he often worked late I generally finished with performances by eleven but he might not be through until one in the morning Somehow we worked it out and still managed to find time to spend together I knew he was seeing Jeanette he frankly told me so but there were problems there and despite everything I knew he still had reservations about her refusal to divorce Gene though she apparently talked of it Whether he would have given Ann whatever she wanted to be free of her if Jeanette had agreed I can only guess I know the relationship caused him a lot of grief These times were variable Sometimes it was once a week others several days running It depended on what his schedule was and what else was happening in his life My schedule was fairly constant

Gene and Jeanette where Gene belligerently began talking of how he d made Jeanette a star how well he guided her career etc Jeanette just sat there looking at her lap while he cut her down until someone told Gene to shut up Like most people in on the relationship she had some missing pieces She commented that the last time she had seen Jeanette was only months before her death Miliza came to visit and though Jeanette was seeing virtually no one she did spend some time with her old friend Miliza found Jeanette very thin very frail but also very determined to take a walk and get some fresh air The two singers walked up and down the stretch of Wilshire Boulevard near Jeanette s apartment and Jeanette talked a bit about her plans for the future She mentioned Nelson and her face lit up hopefully she wanted to lick her illness so that things would finally go right for them Miliza did not want to press her but she never did know what the plans were We told her about Nelson buying a house for them in Scottsdale Arizona and again her eyes filled with tears Poor Nelson she said He suffered so after her death you just don t know He was a broken man I knew it hurt him but I didn t know how much We talked a bit about Jeanette s career drive and her indecisiveness over Nelson It s true her career came first and she drove herself too hard Miliza said But if you think she was merely selfish you didn t really know her She had a bad influence her mother that woman hounded her and made her feel very little and insignificant What a tragic love story I could never love like that If only you d seen them together Their love was so strong it was not of this world beyond a physical love A love like that rarely occurs but it is very taxing Look at Jeanette it ruined her health and she s gone now I m still here and healthy So who s to say whether it was a blessing or not Click here to read other articles Social Links Free Email Newsletter Click here to sign up Upcoming Events Sunday May 1 Sturbridge MA Sunday June 26 Los Angeles Friday Aug 19 Dublin Ireland Latest News Sturbridge Meeting Poster for May 1st Bernadette Schwartz 1947 2016 Important updates re the May and June upcoming events Nelson censored 1960 letter Give her my continuous love On courage January 18 The unfairness of it all and understanding a movie star s pride Jeanette s own recipe book published Print our catalog Is your friend or family member not online Click here to print and give them a copy of our catalog Recent Posts Jeanette Nelson tribute show in Dublin Ireland Health update on Bernadette Schwartz our social media mod Remembering Nelson Eddy 1901 1967 Nelson Eddy
