But the community was amazing We had people up here almost immediately We had volunteers doing clean up for days afterward More trees removed Janie Wasmann Last week however 19 more trees had to be removed because they were diseased and their roots were going into the water lines for the sprinkler system Wasmann said But not to worry They will be replaced at a safer distance from graves and sprinkler lines she said We really want people to understand that we re not destroying anything by taking this last bunch of trees out They re diseased or endangering the underground water system so they have to go Wasmann said Trees that are old and diseased may end up tipping headstones and affecting graves such as has happened in surrounding cemeteries she said The wood removed from the cemetery last week will be used and not simply burned Wasmann said The cedar trees will go to the vo ag shop at Twin Bridges High School to be made into items for the school to sell later as a fundraiser The pine and fir trees went to an organization that gives wood to shut ins and the needy to help heat their homes in the winter she said Eventually the cemetery will be more attractive than ever Wasmann said because at least 12 15 new trees will be planted along the east side next to the road Funds for new trees The cemetery board is collecting donations now to purchase them and so far five area residents have donated at least 100 each to buy the 6 to 8 foot blue spruces that will be planted next summer she said Anyone who makes a minimum of a 100 donation can have their name or the name of their family or business inscribed on a brass memory plaque that will be embedded in a stone to be installed near the cemetery s pump house Wasmann said It ll be another way to have our local families remembered for a long time to come she said Wasmann s lifelong interest in the cemetery came naturally since her father Bill McMillin served on the cemetery board for about 50 years and was the chairman for many many years she said When he died in 2008 the board thought it only natural that his daughter should take over the job I was born and raised here so I know nearly every name on these headstones Wasmann said I love taking care of the place especially the orphans section More than 1 500 people are buried in the Twin Bridges Cemetery she said including 40 unknowns and dozens of children who died while living in the Montana State Children s Center also called the State Orphans Home which operated from 1894 until 1976 Categories Community News Tags Janie Wasmann Twin Bridges and Twin Bridges Cemetery Bookmark the permalink Leave a comment Recommended Articles Twin Bridges School Board accepts students from Sheridan prepares for new year works
