for Canada and promotes ethical and sustainable business practices The local chapter GDC Manitoba has a strong membership base of about 90 design professionals educators and students who are committed to providing the highest standards of design in the industry The chapter provides mentoring and outreach to younger designers as well as professional development And we run and manage Pecha Kucha Night Winnipeg a very well attended event that hosts local presenters of all persuasions four times per year We are constantly seeking new and dedicated members to keep the flame Despite the fact that designers are moving their services and adopting their tools to online audiences or should be if they have not already there is nothing quite like a printed piece to help connect with prospective members communicate our message of goodwill and professionalism and inspire folks to join As an aside I hope that paper will never be lost from the communications tool belt its sustainability is proven despite its reputation Last week we ran a second printing of the brochure designed by us at Manoverboard The brochure seeks to promote the chapter and its members and acts a small conduit to potential businesses and nonprofits seeking

  • Junos, from the blog
Package of the Year The JUNOs are arguably the most important music awards given to recording artists in Canada The process was delightful I was sent about 15 albums and asked to judge the albums on the merit of their cover and packaging artwork I spent hours and hours pouring over the imagery type treatments color and materials of each album Oh and I listened to each record at least three times I voted for what I believed represented the very best of commercial Canadian music packaging at least from the selection of what I had been provided The difficult part was ensuring that the pieces selected not only represented great packaging and good design but that the object itself inhered the character and sensibility of the music it housed Chris Tarry s Rest of the Story won the award The CD itself is gently stuffed between the pages of a gorgeous book which tells the story of a man falling The book and CD were illustrated by Kim Ridgewell and designed by Jeff Harrison of Rethink Canada I m not naturally a fan of most contemporary jazz but I enjoyed many of the tracks which at times reminded me

now heading Acumen The program s mission was to find and develop a diverse group of American business nonprofit government and cultural leaders and to provide a space for them to connect learn and importantly challenge each other s ideas assumptions and ideologies The goal was to find and shape a better path toward civil society and grassroots democracy At the B Corp conference I had a chance to reconnect with one of those NGL fellows What I also found there was that the people representing the B Corp community are a kind of logical extension of that fellowship a natural outgrowth if you will It was my first chance to meet fellow business leaders who care deeply about the future of the planet about our global social compact and about the legacy we leave future generations In essence I felt at home again While the 250 B Corp attendees had different businesses backgrounds and beliefs each one was there to bring their very best ideas and to learn from and challenge one another To a great extent the ethos was not a conforming one it was a place where dissent and difficult conversation was welcome For example I had the opportunity to moderate an Aspen style conversation on Dr Martin Luther King s 1963 Letter from a Birmingham Jail In our discussion I brought up whether the movement of benefit corporations could be said to represent the moderate white church leadership seeking to keep the status quo or the civil rights movement working to change the fundamentals of social justice at that time No one at the table blinked I think we all recognized that there were seeds of moderation truth telling and true action in the B Corp Declaration that we all signed Other Observations When I arrived

nonprofit stakeholders are not well represented However there is a lot of good that come from a thoughtful application of social media these days especially for nonprofits that have fewer or less expansive resources One example is around general PR Years ago it would take thousands of dollars to send out and manage PR each year with little means to track or analyze the results Today a good freelance writer

  • Starbucks and the Muppet Platform, from the blog
drop in the bucket for a company with Starbucks vast leverage I would assume the company is testing the model and would provide new seed financing if some successes are demonstrated Triple Pundit s Raz Godelnik writes in How Starbucks Jobs Campaign Missed the Point that there the larger strategic misalignment between the company and local businesses Starbucks could do it here by collaborating with local businesses and encouraging customers to buy local goods announcing the addition of a local purchasing minimum goal and so on Instead it chose a program that at best is an add on but does not create a real sustainable value I agree If Starbucks seeks to fund strong ties between the company s stores and franchises and local businesses throughout the country CEO Schultz might encourage their stores to develop partnership opportunities co branding or other tools to help small businesses What would happen if each store was provided with a small grant to hire local businesses to provide milk products in store signage or even cleaning services What if Starbucks decided to create an initiative called Starbucks Creates Local in which small home based businesses were brought in to learn about the company s marketing strategies and to provide small advertising and promotion campaigns for their products in store Moreover what if those businesses got free promotion on local Starbucks websites for six months to power those campaigns These local and highly focused practices would leverage the ideas and knowledge of local Starbucks workers promote deeper ties with the community and even maybe create sustainable small businesses What does any of this have to do with The Muppets In the recent movie our fuzzy friends like many in North America have fallen on hard times Each of the characters have essentially given up
