  • Go-Kart Analytics?, from the blog
you are in the system and statistics on your races are recorded All quantitative data including race date and time your lap times as well as the data of every other competitor in your race is recorded It s just like website analytics only for karting racing I Wonder How Fast I Was The immediate benefit of this data is that your lap times are displayed in real time during the race for onlookers in the waiting area and after your race you can see how you stacked up against the competition For the casual or first time racer that s where things end But for the regulars there s so much more Your performance in each race affects a cumulative score In simplest terms winning makes your score go up and losing makes your score go down similar to the chess rating system only with no upper limit The data also accumulates forever and unlike typical website analytics they are publicly available through a website the race data only of course not individual s personal information It s a gold mine of data to review every once in a while or obsess over on a daily basis if you re into that of thing Traffic Data Inspires New Opportunities For the business owner this data can be put to good use in a couple of ways 1 Making such detailed racing history available online is very enticing to people who like to see how they are doing and elevates Speedworld from a casual experience to something you can really commit to Everything from personal histories daily weekly and monthly top times and even a Top 100 leader board are all available 2 Staff can review the top lap times and post them to social media daily When you see

experienced only a fraction of what Brazil has to offer On that note if there s one thing Brazil has to offer aside from its natural beauty its perfect weather great food and about 1 000 other great things it s ethanol Ethanol is an alternative fuel made from sugar cane and Brazil is the largest exporter of it in the world The majority of the cars in Brazil 87 according to Wikipedia are Flex Fuel What that means is they can run on either gasoline or on 100 ethanol The Brazilian government also made it mandatory to blend ethanol with its gasoline since 1976 If all of the fossil fuel in the world suddenly dried up Brazil would quickly adapt rather than collapse like I imagine many fossil fuel dependent countries would Hydro Powers Brazil Brazil is also a massive producer of hydroelectric power I had the opportunity to visit Itaipu Dam a massive partnership between Brazil and Paraguay built on the Paraná River which divides the two countries Itaipu has the second largest power output of all dams in the world and it provides 90 of the power for the entire country of Paraguay 90 That s amazing Power Smart Besides being great at generating power Brazil also excels at conserving it All of the hotels I stayed in used motion sensitive hallway lighting and key activated lights and TVs and air conditioners turn themselves off when you leave the room Hotel shower heads often contained electric heaters that would heat water only while it was flowing Sinks rarely had hot water taps at all in small homes and businesses and some buildings had solar heated water tanks on the roof with electric backups for times without sunlight What do you mean there s no furnace The humble

  • Canada’s Newest Convention Centre… Website, from the blog
quickly to everyone where to park what s for lunch at the cafe what room configurations are available how an exhibitor can order electrical services how much WiFi costs etc The list went on and on Planners exhibitors and attendees all require relevant immediate access to different groups of information so we felt it best to group content most relevant to those groups together This second level of navigation is seen in the blue navigation below the banner images Next corporate and contact information are found in the top nav where people expect them to be along with a couple more frequently used pages called out for direct access Lastly all of the information needed to be responsive to respond to browsers on smartphones and tablets You ll see that the site s menus automatically rearrange to best utilize the available screen real estate whether that screen is very large or very small In fact if your monitor is big enough you ll be able to see all four configurations of the menus by scaling your browser window big and small right now just drag the lower right corner of your browser left and right Fixed Header Images Arguably one of our favorite features of this site is the banner images When any given page loads the large photos at the top are quite striking but you only see the real magic when you scroll down The banner images are fixed in place so that when you scroll the website slides over top of it It s difficult to explain in words but if you visit the site you ll see what we mean HFJ web fonts We re also super excited about using Hoefler Frere Jones new webfont service This site is the first opportunity we ve had to use HJF s hard working Gotham on the web Gone are the days of simply choosing Arial Georgia or Verdana as your font face Web typography has evolved drastically and will continue to do so for many years to come Calendars and documents A website shouldn t just look good and function well it should also be easy to edit and update by someone with minimal content management or computer experience That s why upcoming events and daily cafe features are managed by adding events to familiar Google calendars The calendar events are pulled into the site automatically and show up in all the right places Adding order forms and catering menus is easy too thanks to a file management system built specifically for WordPress When a new menu or form is uploaded it need only be tagged with the appropriate category such as order form and it will automatically show up everywhere it s supposed to Event Planner RFP One of the most important pages of the site is the RFP form Completing a form is the most efficient way for an event planner to inquire about hosting an event at the centre We ve set up an easily

  • Behind the Veil: Hidden Messages and Responsive Design, from the blog
images take up way too much space More than one column of readable text becomes a luxury you likely can no longer afford You begin to feel like a cartoon mechanic under the hood of a car throwing parts of the engine over your shoulder while saying We don t need this or this or this and so on It s important to remove only what you have to and reconfigure or rearrange the things you can save The early wave of m dot websites while good intentioned made one critical mistake They believed that people on mobile sites would want to do a different set of things on their mobile device than they would on a desktop In reality people using smartphones and tablets expect to be able to do everything they can do on a desktop and if you hide content or functionality from them they will feel confused cheated or even angry Once you ve made all your decisions about what you need and what you can live without the first thing you ll have to deal with is the main navigation The approach that I prefer lately is something I first saw while visiting Starbucks com on an iPod touch If you don t have a smartphone that s okay me neither To see the same thing you can just scale your browser window until it s really really narrow As soon as your window drops below 600 pixels wide the normal navigation at the top disappears and is replaced by an unfamiliar icon Three horizontal lines Simple and elegant it is both representational of a list and vague enough to represent a menu of any configuration After a bit more research it turned out that it s not just Starbucks taking this approach it s

  • The End is Not in Sight, from the blog
effort was put into creating the system than creating the end product The custom design of systems on a per client basis has been dropping off over the last few years and we are now facing a much different web landscape It is a landscape revealing the future of the web a future in which designers will be required to embrace systems This by no means is implying that innovation will fall off if anything it will soar As designers not all of us know code and that can indeed be a hindrance in completely realizing our designs Embracing these systems could open up the door for more designers to learn code and elevate their design skills at the same time The foundation and structure will also allow for designers to worry less about the technology and focus on the more important factors like usability and user experience It may also offer an environment that fuels greater experimentation and prototyping which will in turn lead to more innovation Embracing systems frees our mind to imagine more creative solutions for our clients while at the same time giving them unique products that they have always expected from us This does however not mean that it is not without challenges The T Word One major challenge is shedding the idea of these systems being purely a delivery mechanism for templates A client sees a template as something lacking uniqueness and feels that they are paying for a solution that anyone could deliver The templates that we build or reuse are the building blocks they are not the site The template system is purely what drives the web experience it almost gets placed on the same level as web hosting and some might say it is web hosting Freeing up Time Systems may
