    etc The list is endless Comparing two different styles is like comparing two different sports Is tennis better than golf Perhaps if you play tennis and not golf you will think so but both may be equally enjoyable and incomparable Also there are many factors negative or positive away from the actual syllabus of the art which can affect the growth of the system 1 The character of the instructor s 2 The determination and character of the students 3 The equipment and facilities available 4 The amount of money students can afford to pay for training The art could be excellent but if these aspects are poor than the art is classified as being poor If there were such a thing as the best Martial Art would you continue to practice an art knowing that it is only second best The answer is no You and everyone else would study the best style All others styles would cease to exist thus the question Which Martial Art is the best would be deleted because there would only be one art Something can be learnt from every art Everyone is better than you at something Armed with this philosophy you will learn a lot very quickly and become a very successful Martial Artist and person When you have found the best art s for you do not stop looking at or researching other clubs and styles as it may serve many purposes for example 1 If you are an instructor and you get a student joining your club from a different club or system you will be able to relate to them and teach them better if you have prior knowledge about what and how they have been taught 2 If competing it is very helpful to know what style your

    can cause you to freeze or respond incorrectly If you are assertive enough with your words then you can nullify a situation before it happens Remember attackers are looking for easy prey and if you show confidence then they can just as easily look for someone else with less confidence Muggers don t want to work hard to mug you if they liked hard work then they would have proper jobs As soon as you are approached in an uncomfortable way or you sense something could be up you need to get verbal At this stage it is important to be assertive but not aggressive you don t want to escalate a threatening situation BACK OFF GO AWAY LEAVE ME ALONE are all good commands at this stage Make sure that you use a loud strong voice You should adopt a comfortable stance with hands held up and open again not in an aggressive fashion Maintain eye contact too you shouldn t turn your back away from a potential opponent until it is safe to do so If this initial dialogue fails to work then you must use further dialogue Keep the same stance and hand positioning so that you are ready to strike if you have too Reaffirm the commands that you have given but this time in a more forceful way At this point don t hold back because this is the final warning Your voice should be at maximum volume and strength If you bring the attention of passers by this is a good thing If your assailant does not back off and continues to approach you you will more then likely have to deal with the situation physically By using dialogue you will have adequately warned your opponent and you will be justified to use force

    apprentice instructor and then as an assistant instructor He has literally grown up within MAI which is why he has a mature head on young shoulders Eddie is a very well developed all around martial artist who has such a positive energy and friendly attitude Eddie s students have all had great results and he s greatly looking forward to helping new members towards their goals Stephen Large Despite his quiet exterior Stephen is a powerhouse at the Dojo He takes part in everything and is always at the top of the rankings He exudes calmness and friendliness Stephen is a true tough guy on the inside but he never tries to show it on the outside If you met Stephen outside the Dojo you wouldn t ever guess he is as good as he is Listen to Stephen and you will definitely do well Sinead Courtney Sinead has risen through the MAI ranks the old fashioned way with lots of hard work Her committment to the Dojo is unparalleled and she can be seen training in many different classes from Cardio Kickboxing to Sparring Sinead is an accomplished competitor and she has made amazing improvements since she first started Sinead has competed many times and she has won at amateur MMA too Sinead is looking forward to helping others make the same progress Val Burke Val started training at MAI at an age when most people are giving up sports He put in a lot of hard work over his years of training to achieve his black belt Val is a very motivated coach who exudes energy It s hard to believe that he s a grandad several times over Val takes the Friday lunch time classes at MAI D 7 James Merrigan James is the right hand man in D15 and he s hoping to go for his Black Belt very soon but he s never rushed the grades His never quit attitude has brought him competitive success in points continuous ju jitsu mma and grappling James loves the Dojo banter and has one of the biggest smiles in the club Barry Dunne Bad Boy Barry is an imposing figure at MAI but he s always up for the craic at the dojo Barry has been around since the start of MAI and both he and the club have grown from strength to strength Barry likes to train hard and amongst his achievements is a silver medal from the WKC World Championships Derek Foley Derek started his martial arts training when we taught a course at his secondary school He s achieved many things in Martial Arts over the years including being the first MAI 2nd Dan Black Belt Derek is an extremely technical Martial Artist which is no surprise as he s also the most educated MAI instructor He specialises in teaching syllabus and getting the best out of people at belt gradings Louise O Donnell Louise is a long term martial artist and she has been
