  • MBWales - New blue grade route opens at Coed y Brenin
    FC Wales visitor centre along First Steps before descending the sweeping multi bermed Slipway an awesome feat of engineering and design carved into the hillside and returning to the centre along a forest road in the valley bottom following the Afon Eden river Loop two continues from the end of the Slipway and follows a level forest road out to the Pont Cae n y Coed car park where riders can admire the stunning views down the Afon Mawddach gorge before continuing along the Jurassic and Tax Return singletracks and joining the forest road back to the start having covered 5km with 90m of climbing A three metre high giant stainless steel bull s nose ring designed by world renowned Welsh sculptor Gideon Petersen marks the trailhead and a number of eight foot tall iron minotaurs a mythical half man half bull figure are hidden along the trail where silver hoof prints provide the only clue to their presence The MinorTaur is graded blue intermediate but Mountain Bike Ranger Andy Braund said the special features including the 1 5m wide singletrack sections with a maximum gradient of 5 made it suitable for all abilities For example the berms are wider and shallower than they would be at red grade with a flat sweeping bottom so mountain bike trikes can get round without tipping over he said The rollers and table tops are also less steep than they would be at red grade and they have a longer top to stop the likes of mountain bike tandems bottoming out with their long wheel base and drop offs are small so kids small wheeled bikes can roll over them It has all the blue grade features you d expect but they are all designed to be progressive so it s suitable for

  • and Caerphilly County Borough Council the contract is part of a mountain bike project which will see 5 million worth of investment in the region over the next three years The contract will commence on 1 April 2011 and conclude in March 2013 In total approximately 915 000 will be invested in new mountain bike trails in Afan Forest Park and Cwmcarn Mountain biking is fundamental to the tourism sector in South Wales and this investment will further enhance what the region has to offer Some of the new trails at Afan Forest Park will be green blue graded which means they will be aimed at beginner intermediate mountain bikers These trails will attract newcomers to the sport and encourage younger people and families to take part in the growing activity Cwmcarn will benefit from a new downhill facility and both regions will have a new skills section This substantial investment will improve what South Wales has to offer as a tourism destination and attract visitors to the area which will boost our local economy Easier mountain bike trails will encourage local youngsters and families to take part in the sport stated Gordon Andrews Head of Economic Development Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council Ian MacVicar Group Manager Operations Caerphilly County Borough Council was particularly enthused with these latest developments The aim of making South Wales a world class mountain bike destination is particularly welcomed Increasing visitor numbers from new and existing market segments will be a real boost to the tourism industry By improving Cwmcarn with a new skills area new singletrack and downhill trails and improved facilities will not only put the Centre on the international mountain biking map but will increase the overall recreational offer to locals and tourists alike We are looking forward to working with
