  • MBWales - Dragons Back Ridge
2016 2 Dragons Back Ridge Ben Dunster is an 18 year old student studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath He lives within riding distance of the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons which he tells us is pretty much the perfect location if you are a mountain biker Ben s been filming his rides with a GoPro for nearly three years and it s via his YouTube channel that we became inspired by one of his latest trips If you get your kicks from big views technical descents and plenty of sweaty effort getting up then this is definitely one ride for you I ll let Ben tell you a little more about it Encouraged by a father with a love of cycling I learnt to ride not long after I could walk and have not stopped since I have competed in disciplines such as Cyclo cross XC MTB and Road all my life My favourite place to ride is the Black Mountains because of the fantastic terrain and isolated feeling It is how natural riding should be There s no two ways about it with the Black Mountains whichever route you choose it will involve a difficult climb On this day I decided to ride and push the steepest parts up the Dragon s Back ridge I intended to ride down starting near the Black Mountains Gliding Club in Pengenfordd This allowed me to check the ridge before riding down I continued up onto the top of the Black Mountains peaking at the Pen Y Manllwyn summit 775m After taking in the views and a drink I turned the camera on and set off on the descent The ride down is a good as it gets It s really fast in places and steep and technical in others

partnership which is part funded by the by the EU s Convergence European Regional Development Fund through Visit Wales and the Welsh Government Additional funding towards the project comes from Forestry Commission Wales Gwynedd Council the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Tourism Partnership Mid Wales The new third loop called Buwch Bren Wooden Cow has longer sustained climbs more technical features including hips and a series of climbing turns all with a narrower width designed to improve single track cross country riding skills The addition of Buwch Bren extends the MinorTaur s range to nine kilometres and its modular design means riders can tackle one loop three kilometres two loops five kilometres or the full distance Forestry Commission Wales mountain bike ranger Andy Braund said This will be it for now but we hope to add another loop to extend the trail to around 12 kilometres dependent on securing further funding The MinorTaur has quickly become the most popular trail at Coed y Brenin It s a great fun introduction to mountain biking for a wide range of ages and abilities and is unique in that it can be enjoyed by riders with a disability using adaptive mountain bikes It s also working well as a great starting point for learning new off road riding skills and gaining confidence before moving on to the more difficult trails like Cyflym Coch The third loop of the blue moderate grade MinorTaur includes an upgraded two way multi use crossing of the beautiful Mawddach gorge over the aerial bridge called Offspring The trail approaches at either end of the bridge have been widened the gradient reduced and some wider passing places installed to allow passage of the wider three and four wheel adaptive bikes as well as pedestrians We re also planning to build

  • MBWales - New MinorTaur loop opens
Forest Park providing a great reason for anyone who may have over indulged at Christmas to begin their counter attack in the fight against the flab Since it opened in May the MinorTaur has quickly established itself as the most popular trail at the iconic mountain bike destination near Dolgellau attracting more riders during the summer than well established favourites such as The Tarw The Bull in Welsh and The Beast of Brenin Forestry Commission Wales has been racing to build on the trail s initial success and has now opened the second loop of the ambitious 500 000 project which has been over three years in the planning just in time for the festive break Loop one is 3km long and starts from the striking giant bull s nose ring trailhead feature behind the Forestry Commission Wales visitor centre in the heart of the Welsh Government forest Loop 2 links up with this route and now follows the new section called White Bull out to the Pont Cae n y Coed car park where riders can admire the stunning views down the Afon Mawddach gorge before continuing along the Naxos and Hwyl Ddu singletracks and joining the forest road back to the start having covered 5km with 90m of climbing The opening of Loop 2 marks the end of the second phase of the project which forms part of the Gwynedd Council led Eryri Centre of Excellence partnership which is part funded by the EU s Convergence European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government The blue grade intermediate MinorTaur cross country trail will be completed over the next two years and is part of an ambitious Forestry Commission Wales aim to provide equal access opportunities for all sectors of society It is being built in phases to a specific design criteria to allow more people to experience the thrill of mountain biking in Welsh Government woodlands The trail is designed for beginner to intermediate skilled mountain bikers adults and children It is suitable for small wheeled kids bikes tag a longs and adaptive mountain bikes for riders with disability Coed y Brenin Forest Park recreation manager Graeme Stringer said Our research which identified a demand for a more family friendly trail in Coed y Brenin has really paid off The figures from the trailhead counters confirm that the MinorTaur was the busiest trail over the summer outstripping even the most established of the forest park s trails with more than 5 000 riders trying it out in August alone As Coed y Brenin was the first trail centre developed in the UK it has always catered for the skilled and experienced mountain biker Hence we have lots of red difficult and black severe grade trails But we felt it was important to be able to introduce the fun of mountain biking to as many people as possible The MinorTaur fills the gap in the trail provision at Coed y Brenin and allows us to make good on that

  • MBWales - ‘Challenge your Boundaries’ Adaptive MTB project
got in touch with Graham O Hanlon the Project Leader and he s written up a great account of exactly how the day went down After a couple of years in active preparation the Discover Dolgellau Challenge your Boundaries project saw its official birth last Saturday at a surprisingly sun drenched Coed y Brenin trail centre In partnership with the Snowdonia National Park Sport Wales and Forestry Commission Wales the aim of the project is to develop and promote adaptive mountain biking aMTB as a means by which active people with disabilities can regain access to the mountain wilderness or experience it for the first time That s the official party line but unofficially we like to think of it as giving a wider range of people the same chance to crash as we have Our aim is to encourage risk management and judgement in those competent to do so and to create a suitable support structure for those who can t We are not going to be wrapping anyone up in cotton wool though body armour is available The launch party started with a series of short talks about aMTB from different perspectives an experienced adaptive rider talked about mountain biking from a user s viewpoint whilst an army medical officer talked about the value of adventure activity from a rehab stand point After some quick thank yous from me there was the formal handover of two aMTBs from the Snowdonia National Park Authority to the project From there it was out into the sunshine for a bike try out session on a skills circuit set up next to the visitors centre This open session gave the opportunity to try out a number of different adaptive bikes but the balmy weather also encouraged a bit of an aMTB social with groups of riders sunning themselves and swapping equipment tips and tales of aMTB adventure After a buffet lunch a group of us including 4 hand cyclists set out for a ride into the park The hand cycles were a variety of designs some of which performed well on technical terrain but were less good on fat trail and vice versa We made a warm up loop of the MinorTaur trail to shake down lunch and this was not without its moments Steve now to be known as Swiss for the number of rolls he performed had his own mini adaptive adventure off the side of those spectacular switchbacks on The Slipway but managed to stay on the track if not altogether upright on a second attempt A long climb then took us to our first bit of technical trail a rock strewn and slippery climb up the remains of an old Roman road The two One Off hand cycles sluggish on the flat came into their own on this kind of terrain and Adrian a veteran of several Black Runs at Coed y Brenin made light work of the tricky stone step mid way up the trail He was
