  • MBWales - Pedal & Petrol in North Wales
2 November 2014 2 December 2014 5 January 2015 2 February 2015 2 March 2015 5 April 2015 2 January 2016 2 Pedal Petrol The weather for the weekend ahead was looking all blue skies and suns so it seemed like an ideal time to put into motion a petrol and pedal Welsh weekend roadtrip that we d been talking about for a while We loaded our bikes of choice into the back of the car along with our camping gear and set the sat nav for North Wales First stop was a day of petrol driven uplifts and downhill trails We strapped on our body armour and rode the bone shaken jump inducing descents at Antur Stiniog It was my first time riding at Antur Stiniog for a full day and I always underestimate just how tired I ll be after riding downhill for six hours The uplifts worked perfectly and I almost wished it would take a little longer to get back to the top just so I could have an extra rest Lunch a la Antur Stiniog style was delicious But after a half hour break it was back to hitting the trails and not wasting any of that precious uplift time From there it was on to Arthur s five pounds please campsite A simple camp spot by the river and a short walk to the pub More food this time accompanied by beer and we were soon well and truly ready for bed In the morning we decided to give the Y Ffowndri Skills Area at Coed y Brenin a blast A very worthwhile trip and if you can squeeze in your hardtail all the better After a good work out we had another excuse to consume yet more food at the Cord y Brenin

matter but through the image so with this in mind try including not just the main subject but add subject matter to the foreground middle ground and background remember to move around the subject trying different angles and viewpoints The main subject here is of Ally Campbell and her student campbellcoaching eu However I included the trees in the foreground and the wooden north shore in the background to add depth to the finished image have a go at trying this technique next time you are out on your bike Depth of field is a different element to photography as I mentioned depth of field literally refers to the sections of the image that are in focus or out of focus this can also add an interesting element to photography a narrow depth of field will leave the image with a small focal point and lots of blur in the image and a large depth of field gives a large focal point and little blurring don t worry if this sounds complicated as we will be looking at depth of field in detail at a later time In this image I used subject matter to increase depth in the foreground I included the landing ramp of the jump middle ground the rider and in the background another rider the depth of field here is quite narrow so it helps to give the main element the rider punch and helps the rider stand out Ok enough about depth we are now going to look at camera panning this is a fun element of photography and I know you will all enjoy trying it out Camera Panning When panning with a camera we are looking for one simple result we want to blur the background to give an element of speed but

is the main point of focus looking at the image I find my eye drawn into the picture following the curve of the trail like all photographs it was taken to capture a singular moment in time to record an event and serve to document Merion has achieved this perfectly and produced a lovely Mountain Bike Photo well done This second image was taken by Dan Jones in Aberystwyth Dan has a really good understanding of composition he has worked very cleverly here with both the rule of thirds and image depth using the trees of the wood to his advantage he has framed the two riders perfectly although the trees are strongly in the foreground they absolutely do not distract from the main point of focus the image draws you in and creates a illusion of speed I love this nice work 10 out of 10 Image Processing So far we have covered a few of the basic elements to photography rule of thirds composition and camera panning so now I think it s time we looked at image processing to process your images you will require some software some of you may have Adobe Photoshop Elements or a version of CS and some of you may have Lightroom for those of you that are really new to photography and are working to a budget you can download Google s Picasa its free and offers a couple of basic tools that are really going to help you get the best from your images When you open up Picasa you will need to click on library and then you will see the tool bar we are going to use to start with we are going to use just the first two tabs and the first has a little spanner as
