a little thought and creativity can result in a more interesting shot From now on I would ask you to consider this before pressing the button on your camera think about where you are going to take the shot and how moving around can vastly effect the message your image conveys try taking the shot from above stand on the top of a burm or bank take the shot from way down low near the ground from the side from behind or even from a distance away Here are a few different examples I shot taken from different points of view A low angle shot A side angle shot A behind angle shot Rule of thirds Imagine that your intended shot is devided into 9 segments by 2 lines running equaly along the horizontal and vertical you will see a grid that looks like the one in the following image Now the rule of thirds is really quite simple the rule suggests that you place the most important elements of your shot along these lines or at the point where they meet It is worth checking you camera s menu as some offer the option to superimpose a rule of thirds grid to your view finder or LCD screen Now we are armed with our new understanding of the rule of thirds we can start to experiment it can make the main subject of your image more interesting if we place it off to one side using the rule of thirds make sure you try and include other less important subject matter to add balance to your shot in the photo above of Ally Campbell I have included the lone tree and interesting texture of the quarry wall to balance this shot of Ally if I had taken a few

  • MBWales - February Challenge: Pay Back Your Dirt
be a lot of fun too We spoke to Vicky from Menter Bro Machno the community group which manages the Penmachno trails and asked her to tell us more about you could get involved and how people can help to develop the community trails Question what do you get if you cross 15 mountain bikers with 10 shovels 5 mattocks and a section of Penmachno trail Answer a Penmachno Trail Maintenance Day OK so it s not a great joke but the last one was a fun filled and sun filled day and is one of numerous Trail Maintenance Days that enable the Penmachno Trails to be maintained developed So why do the Penmachno Trails need teams of bikers armed with shovels and mattocks to maintain them Well they are one of only a handful of trails that are managed by the local community which means they are not funded by the Forestry Commission or private enterprise but actually rely on donations from bikers and teams of volunteers to maintain repair and improve them The ethos is to pay back your dirt if you enjoyed the ride then pay it back by either signing up for a Trail Maintenance Day or by dropping 2 in the donation box at the trail head Conwy Falls Café or by PayPal Or if you really enjoyed the ride by doing both The trails were initially funded by schemes using Welsh Assembly European funding the majority of the funding came from Cydcoed a Forestry Commission funding programme and the rest from Adfywio scheme designed to support community level tourism and enterprise development Loop 1 was completed in 2004 and was built using local constructors whilst loop 2 was finished in 2005 6 and was built mainly by external contractors To really reflect it s community based nature 10 of all funds raised from the trails are given to community projects which to date have included the village Football Team CPD Machno United the Youth Club If you haven t ridden the Penmachno Trails before and if not why not they are the hidden gem of North Wales Tucked away in the beautiful Machno valley the trails feature 30km of remote red graded super sweet single track easy forest track which is split into two loops Dolen Machno Loop 1 Dolen Eryri Loop 2 The loops can be ridden individually or as one amazing 30km ride If you do ride the complete circuit be warned just as you get your breath back from the ripping descents of Loop 1 the views from Loop 2 will take it away again The next Trail Maintenance Day is on February 25 th 2012 so if you fancy becoming part of the Penmachno Team and paying back your dirt then meet at Conwy Falls Café at 10am If you can t make the 25 th then there are plenty more dates check out the Events page on this site or Facebook Penmachno mountain bike trails for more details And

  • MBWales - February Challenge: Dyfi Valley Volunteers
the woods surrounding Machynlleth It was a hardy group of mud lovers a small and disparate band of explorers roaming the hills and valleys on their Raleigh Mustang s or Muddy Fox Courier s Amongst their number were Tegid Humphreys and Carl Jones whom after having enjoyed the delights of the newly opened Coed y Brenin mountain bike centre 25 miles north of Machynlleth wished to recreate those rocky delights here in sunny Mach Then in 2004 DyfiMountainbiking Ltd was created as the hub around which the wheel of events slowly turn Together with Ecodyfi funding was secured and Ecotrails were contracted to build the Climach X trail it s Climax geddit We then had the longest handcrafted single track descent IN THE WORLD Well probably in the UK and definitely in Powys This was made possible with financial help fromWales Tourist Boardand Dulas Ltd and many other donations from local businesses and people We hope to extend the final descent of the Climach X trail to end at the car park after felling operations have been completed later this year Volunteers will be needed for help with this More details will be announced on the both here on MBWales and on the Dyfi Valley Facebook group Please contact us if you wish to offer help The world renowned DyfiEnduro was born nearly 11 years ago due to the hard work and enthusiasm of many people as these things often are Spawned from that Carl Jones now organisies the Winter Warm up event held every winter in the forest for those of you keen enough to brave the hills in sub zero temperatures And last October Joe Hayward started the Coed y Brenin Enduro Details of these and any future events can be found on the Dyfi MTB Events Facebook
