  • Michael Halldorson - Why I Make Prints
making the plate and re working the plate to achieve my desired effect brings me great joy even though it is hard work and time consuming Secondly unlike paintings or drawings I can have my image in many collections galleries or collectors homes at the same time Thirdly I can project my ideas thoughts and fantasies to others There are times when a collector is purchasing a piece of mine and they start telling me what it says to them I get pleasure from that even if it s not always what I intended There are times when I over hear someone who is viewing one of my pieces and they are not aware that I am the artist they will start telling another person what the artist meant to say That is usually great fun Fourthly I can generate income for non profit organizations through my donations of my work Finally I guess I don t want to die What do I mean by that A good friend and mentor Professor Marion Austin Epting formerly of California State University Chico was once asked by a student why are we artists and then he explained that we are artists because

  • Michael Halldorson - My Time With M.C. Escher
an Escher exhibit I had a chance to purchase an Escher print very reasonably the very same print as in the paper but I was going to Europe and needed all my money so I did not David his wife Ellen and I went to Europe in June 1970 When we landed at Skipol International Airport in Amsterdam I went to the phone booth looked up M C Escher s name in the phone book and called Mr Escher I could hardly believe it was that easy he was listed in the phone book because at that time the whole world wanted a piece of his time I said Mr Escher my name is Michael Halldorson I am a graduate printmaking student from Chico California and I must see you This is Escher showing me his Snakes print the last of his storied career His first words were I just got rid of two American s He said that I could have fifteen minutes at three o clock on Friday afternoon I was ecstatic Then came Friday I took the Euorail train from Amsterdam to Baarn the town where Escher lived I was in town hours early Sat down in a quaint café with a cup of cappuccino and fantasized what it would be like meeting Escher What would we have time to discuss in fifteen minutes Could I possibly get all my questions in that amount of time Would we just get started and then find it was time to go A taxi had me at Escher s home fifteen minutes early At precisely three PM I knocked on his door I was greeted at the door by Escher s wife Jetta who had a friend over for tea or so I assumed I then saw a slight white

  • Michael Halldorson - My Time With Janet Turner
two and one half years I majored in girls cars booze a job and school necessarily in that order The summer of 1963 I went back to Newport Rhode Island and went through Reserve Officer s Candidate School for the Navy I had been in the Naval Reserve since September of 1961 Fall semester 1963 found me in the same majors and as a result Chico State asked me not to return for a while Since the only junior college was fifty miles away in Yuba City California I decided to enter the active Navy and join the fleet Ironically that semester I had changed my major to art and was fortunate to take an introductory class in printmaking from Dr Janet E Turner I really enjoyed that class but the Navy now had me for three years Jump forward to spring semester 1967 Chico State accepted me back and I was an art major I took another class from Janet It was a glorious time I could only think of printmaking and no other form of art Printmaking consumed me Yes I did have to take painting ceramics and sculpture but my heart was not in them Janet asked

  • Michael Halldorson - My Time With Marion Austin Epting
He had an easy way about him and exuded professionalism He taught drawing printmaking and African art It was not until I after I graduated that I took African art from Marion He impressed me with his knowledge of the subject and his smooth delivery in his lectures and slide presentations I felt very privileged to be invited to some of the wildest parties I ever attended at Chico State Yes you guessed it Marion could throw one hell of a party I would end up going to many of Marion s parties and remember them I think well I left Chico State after the fall semester of 1971 to work for my parent s appliance repair business and was not destined to make another print for almost 20 years I worked very hard at the business trying to make it a success In 1990 I got a divorce and decided to go back to school something Dr Turner wanted me to do and took a night printmaking class from Marion I could not devote the time required to do my best work because my head was still down at the shop but it gave me the boost I needed
