  • 1962 Scootacar Mk II
    The Mark I was essentially a low stable platform frame with the driver and passenger straddling a bench scooter style The strange angelfish like shape was made of fiberglass but the two halves were joined vertically down the center With a large door on the left side and one of the largest parcel shelves in the industry this Scootacar was quite roomy Despite the five foot height it was named the telephone booth as many were finished in red the little car handled extremely well In 1959 it was decided there was a need for a more refined model Rather than opting for a few minor changes Scootacar came up with the Mark II totally redesigned from stem to stern with a larger body shell incorporating a sort of tail The motor now lived under a large plush angled rear bench while the driver sat on a proper chair which tipped forward While a very sound car it appeared to late for substantial sales In 1961 a 250 cc twin has fitted to about 50 cars but few customers were willing to brave the 62 mph white knuckle ride Manufacturer Hunslet Engine Works Leeds England Model Scootacar Mark II Motor

  • 2003 Segway HT
    sensors combined with motors to provide motion in all directions the entire device controlled simply by body movements In actual use it works extremely well with a remarkable unity between man and machine There is not a sense of driving a machine as much as merely thinking what it is to do and it responds instantly and smoothly There is a mandatory instruction course that must be taken on purchase and the personal electronic key sets the machine up in one of three performance profile settings One leans slightly forward to go and backwards to stop Sensors in the platform detect minute changes in angle and pitch and motors in each wheel speed up or slow down to maintain balance and steer Since its introduction the Segway has in some eyes fallen short of expectations and has been criticized and become the butt of jokes much like that other supposed revolutionary means of transport the electric Sinclair C5 of twenty years ago But a large group of supporters insist that it will indeed fulfill its initial promise and a world wide support network has been formed Its success will depend on how it fits into the real world however as

  • S.E.A.T. 600
    A desire to broaden the market resulted in the decision in 1957 to build the enormously popular Fiat 600 already in production in Italy for some two years This car was one of the world s great success stories its roominess for its size good looks robust construction and reliable four cylinder engine resulting eventually in the building of 2 7 million examples The license built S E A T 600 was distinguishable from the Fiat 600 only by a different front emblem Later model changes followed their Italian Counterparts Eventually more uniquely Spanish variants would be built One of these the Furgoneta Comercial substituted the rear seat with a storage box with lid There was still no rear access so many owners removed the passenger seat The rear quarter panels were replaced with steel Another variant was the 800 still with the 767 cc motor but with a wheelbase stretched by 18cm and four doors hinged at the same B pillar A small set of rear quarter windows was added also Few examples remain of this model which was replaced by the regular Fiat 850 Spanish production continued into the seventies long after the Fiat 600 had been discontinued

  • 1985 Sinclair C5
    Like TV and computers the idea of producing an electric vehicle had been a constant preoccupation for him In the 70 s ecological issues were in the forefront and the British government passed legislation that allowed electric assisted cycles to be used without a license as long as they didn t exceed 15mph Sinclair s directors were critical of spending corporate money on this type of research so Sir Clive sold a small fraction of his company shares which netted 12 million pounds for the cause The chassis design was by Lotus the motor by Polymotor and the polypropylene body the largest one piece injection moulding to date After negotiations for the former DeLorean plant failed the C5 was built in a Hoover factory in Wales The much publicized launch was an unqualified disaster It was held in the middle of winter and the C5 s bodies skated on the snow The press was merciless Safety and Advertising Standards organizations got involved Sales and production nosedived and the company was wound up in October of the same year with an unfazed Sir Clive out of pocket some 8 6 million pounds Manufacturer Sinclair Vehicles Camberley Surrey England Model C5 Motor

  • 1956 BAG Spatz
    Friedrich was looking for other product possibilities Because of the poor suspension design Friedrich employed the 77 year old Tatra constructor Dr Hans Ledwinka who designed a car with a fixed central backbone tube and the front wheels hung on a separate subframe The new 4 wheel layout acquired strut suspension and hydraulic brakes The Fichtel Sachs Messerschmitt motor was retained The twin rear wheels were on swing axles and the Plexiglas windshield was replaced by a split glass one Friedrich introduced the new Spatz at the IAA in 1955 in Frankfurt Production began in Traunreuth with the motorcycle firm Victoria Werke in Nurnberg handling sales and service In 1956 the Bayerische Autowerke GmbH BAG was formed The engine was the familiar 191cc Sachs Messerschmitt The press was critical of the high price and the less than sparkling performance An acrimonious lawsuit from Brutsch claiming corruption of his design and fire problems encouraged Friedrich to hand the rights over to Victoria at the end of 1956 859 vehicles were built until May 1957 Manufacturer Bayerische Autowerke GmbH Traunreut Germany Model Spatz Motor Sachs 2 stroke Body Fiberglass Years Built Feb 1956 May 1957 No Cylinders 1 Chassis Tube No Produced
