  • Los Angeles to Monterey - Minkukel
could see it is interesting to suffer themselves on the surf board At Malibu we got some view of golden canyon covered with dry grass on the right and the Pacific Ocean on the left Today the ocean was hazy and cold and looks a bit sad as the stony muffin of this morning A seagull at the pier of Santa Barbara We kept driving until we were arrived at the Santa Barbara beach which is more or less half way to Monterey bay where we were going to stay tonight Santa Barbara is such a cozy and peaceful beach The first sight that caught my impression is the small beaches lined with palm shaded greenery lawn The sea here is clear and has a blue color I would say it is the good place for a holiday after hard work It must good for sun bath volley ball swimming in case u are not afraid of cold or even just walk and sit and relax or whatever you can think of There are two nice restaurants with several kind of sea food Following the pacific coast we passed many beaches with views over the ocean After lunch we hit the road again heading to the Hearst Castle at San Simeon to see the enormous house which had belonged to the very rich person before There are 115 magnificent rooms for the main house plus guesthouses pools and 8 acres of cultivated gardens It is pity that we were at the gate just too late The schedule on the gate show that the last film representing the castle already had started Not bad I saw the car in front of me give a sorrow look to the gate Anyway I come after him better keep go on maybe we still can see some thing on the road side with the remaining light of today We drove a few miles north of the Heart Castle This road is very fantastic it makes several curves left then right and up then down Sometime I see only the hill sometime I see the sea Along the roadside we saw several sign board showing scenic byways but when we stop to look it is just the beautiful view It is just too much till I don t feel excited anymore An elephant seal comes out of the water to find a private spot on the beach At Point Piedras Blancas we saw a few cars stop so we decided to check what is out there Nothing is special here I think no beautiful view even Wait I hear something I never heard before we follow that sound On the beach we saw a lot of enormous creatures laying there They look very heavy to me Elephant seals relaxing on the beach Now and then a quarrel between neighbours They were the northern elephant seal Mirounga angustirostris which is an extraordinary marine mammal There are about 15 000 animals that stay here They spends 8

is amazing The next gallery shows an octopus and it s interesting to observe how they move This creature s skin is funny stuff when they get attacked they can change the color to defend themselves I saw they keep changing their color from brown to red blue green yellow and purple Further on is the living exhibition display the composition of the bay habitats of Monterey bay bird fish sea plant etc If you are a child or have a child you would never want to miss the touch pools all children would love it I saw many children were smiling and laughing when play with the colorful sea stars red blue yellow and purple I had touched them and also the turtles they were hard The sea weed feels like a hard leaf I liked the anemones they were very soft feel like a jelly But the crabs I never trust them so I think better I won t try to touch them The last exhibition for the left wing of the first floor is called Mission to the deep it shows the big waves rolling into the sea This place was set up on the glass dome so you can walk under it and observe the wave You will feel like you are under water under and the wave catch you Many children run and run through this dome several times The second floor on the right wing shows the discovery lab classrooms This room was set like a restaurant and you can order the seafood In this room you will learn what kind of seafood you can eat and what seafood you should avoid to not cause damage to the ocean The next exhibition is the jellies living art I saw several jellies flying in the water The blue light in the container makes the jellies look even more fantastic It gives a good visibility to see the inside part of the jelly and you can see the tentacle moving Jelly fish Then we heard that there is a show starting in the next room the tuna feeding Many people already were sitting on the stage facing the very big tank which is full with several species of fish There are many big tuna fish and a very special monster called sun fish which you would never ever see in anyplace These animals are huge and round with a tiny mouth and no tail and they have a very slow motion more like floating In this gallery tuna is a main actor they swim very fast especially when suddenly they get a lot of food in front of them We left the aquarium at noon heading north to San Francisco but still thinking of the sea otter and we often stopped trying to look for them while we drove along the Pacific Coast Highway At some cliff I saw some kelp floating in the water with some small head sticking out of the wave but far

several photos while we drove over the bridge It is a 1 7 mile long suspension bridge which took more than four years to finish the construction at a cost of 35 million We stopped to take a photo of the bridge at the vista point north side of the bridge Another way you could get a different view of the golden gate is from the boat trip which offers you the under bridge view among the ocean atmosphere and it also bring you to the Alcatraz Island the notorious prison which we decide to skip it We paid 5 for the toll on the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge on the way back into town A visit to San Francisco is not complete without a ride over the Golden Gate Bridge The vista point on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge offers spectacular views over the bay From the bridge I could see the dome of the Palace of Fine Art Theatre which is the next stop Many tourists were there to visit the beautiful Roman and Greek Architecture The palace was surrounded by the Walter S Johnson Park the beautiful lake with the fountain in it and greenish garden Originally the Palace was constructed for the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition on December 8 1913 The construction supposed to last a year but it collapsed already A single dome now remains from the eight identical structures that were originally constructed Towering colonnaded walkways linked the buildings on the site but only a few remain intact This palace was in restoration for several times in 1915s after First World War 1950s and again in 1960s to ensure its longevity The fountain of the San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts The Palace of Fine Arts is one of the landmarks of San Francisco The exhibition hall which during the exposition housed Impressionist paintings is now the Exploratorium which is an interactive science museum We spent half day to learn science in this museum The displays were made to teaching science in an amusing way and also easy to understand for children You can play here all day if you want Near the Palace of Fine Arts is the Exploratorium a museum of science art and human perception You will be amazed with hundreds of displays offering many hours of fun Then we went back to Pier 39 The colorful decoration of this pier red blue green flag and colorful shop contrasting with the greenery yard at front struck my sight from far away Many cruises were parking at the port loading people in and out for the golden gate and Alcatraz trip Next from the port there was a small boot selling the cruise ticket to the queuing people In such luminous day we were walking hand in hand with an enjoying mood against the cold breeze blowing from the San Francisco Bay trotting among the song from the pier 39 At some point we got some

  • San Francisco to Eureka - Minkukel
91 meters 300 feet John Steinbeck was here and had something to say about it The trees are truly from another time because the oldest ones are over 2000 years old Traveling through the coastal redwoods area the ocean is never far away The redwoods ecosystem depends on coastal mist and fog The redwood tree named Hyperion was confirmed in 2006 to be the world s tallest living tree Hyperion is found on a hillside in Northern California and has a height of 115 55 meters 379 1 feet Hyperion s location is one of California s best kept secrets for the sake of respecting the tree s surrounding ecosystem About 160 years ago the redwood forest covered two million acres It is pity that nowadays we have less than 4 percent left Our first destination we had planed for today is the Chandelier Drive thru Tree just after Mendocino District On the left of the high way 101 you will see a signboard point to the Drive Thru Tree Park While you are driving in you will notice all of the roads in the Park are dirt roads they are paved with nature s speed bumps We drove slowly under the arms of the giants to enjoy the beauty and varied plant The road finally brought us to the big hole approximately 6 wide by 6 9 high at the bottom part of the enormous tree which is maximum age 2 400 years This tree was carved in the 1930 s The Chandelier Tree derives name from the enormous branches balanced on either side of the trunk a three armed candelabra like These branches which are the size of small trees begin about a hundred feet up the trunk There is not much things to do here just a small park with only 1 main attraction the drive thru tree so we drove thru this tree for a few times made some photos with the big trunks and visited the souvenir shop which is in the park center office behind the drive thru tree We drove away back to Highway 101 again heading to the Humboldt Redwoods State Park without knowing there is another beautiful scenic byway 31 mile stretch on old Highway 101 parallel to Freeway 101 calls an Avenue of the Giants The Avenue of the Giants was started from Phillipsville and finish at Pepperwood The map shows plenty of camp sites nature trails and many activities to do for example fishing boating swimming hiking and skiing along the road Also many tourist attractions such as drive thru tree tree house woodworks shop and horse camp This is the famous drive through tree But you can also walk through This 2400 year old tree is 96 meter high and it has a diameter of 6 4 meter Stand upright in a hollow tree Humboldt Redwoods State Park is the second place we had visit It is the California s third largest state park occupying 53 000 acres

photographs to show this tree The burnt inside of a hollow tree Many trees show marks of forest fires The fire can cause the tree to become hollow but the tree survives Forest fires can burn big holes in the trees but the tree survives and continues to grow Not only the trees but also the ferns are big Two giants competing with each other This tree seemed to be decorated with pink leaves or flowers Hey somebody made a statue of a man and a cow It takes a moment to realize how big they really are A few miles north of Orick we followed the Davison road which is a scenic route to reach the beach In the forest we spotted a number of deer Red woods deer in forest The beach is littered with old tree trunks Fern Canyon is an amazing place A tiny river between two walls that are overgrown with thousands of ferns A wall of green in Fern Canyon A small trail follows a pretty creek in Fern Canyon Another elk was waiting for us near the main road on our way back to Eureka At the end of the day we were treated on this natural light show We returned to our hotel in Eureka and the next day our journey would take us towards Lake Tahoe Goto Day 6 Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked Comment Name Email Website Pick a day Los Angeles to Monterey Monterey to San Francisco San Francisco San Francisco to Eureka Redwoods Eureka via Lassen to Lake Tahoe Lake Tahoe Lake Tahoe to Mammoth Yosemite National Park Mammoth via Death Valley to Las Vegas Las Vegas via Zion to Grand Canyon Grand Canyon North Rim Zion
