colors of autumn create surprising views in the landscape Rocky rivers winding between the hills and mountains The road follows a river Yellow color of autumn in the valley The beautiful colors of autumn The beautiful colors of autumn Deers running away in the distance From a distance we see the Mono Lake The shores of the Mono Lake have a special type of vegetation without trees A close up view of the Mono Lake The shore line of the Mono Lake is black This is because it is covered in millions of tiny black flies which form part of this lake s special ecosystem We are very happy that these flies like to sit where they are and don t want to sit on us An earthquake has split the rocks in the middle of this forest near Mammoth The bark of a tree Not only the landscapes and forests but also these smaller details are interesting features during the holiday This view from a mountain top near Mammoth shows ragged peaks in the distance The light effects of the approaching sunset tell us that the day is almost over These mountains near Mammoth offer excellent winter sport opportunities during the winter months Mammoth is a winter sports town and has many hotels and lodgings to choose from We will stay here two nights because tomorrow we will spend the entire day visiting the Yosemite National Park Goto Day 9 Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked Comment Name Email Website Pick a day Los Angeles to Monterey Monterey to San Francisco San Francisco San Francisco to Eureka Redwoods Eureka via Lassen to Lake Tahoe Lake Tahoe Lake Tahoe to Mammoth Yosemite National Park Mammoth via Death Valley to Las

is already starting to grow There are still some new fires nearby because the sky around us is clouded with smoke Smooth rock surfaces that were polished by glaciers ages ago Also the small boulders that are scattered on the rock surface were deposited there by glaciers Far in the distance we see Half Dome a famous granite rock that rises 1400 meter above the floor of the valley Huge granite rock walls form the main attraction for tourists and for climbers A cliff of 900 meters high and 1600 meters wide is believed to be the biggest monolith in the world A bear in the forest No signboard prepared us for this lucky encounter with a bear Trees rocks and sunlight Just sit down and relax Cliffs like this attract hundreds of climbers from all over the world to test their skills But where are the climbers Is there anybody out there Yes with a lot of zoom we discover a small figure like a fly on a wall It takes several days to climb a wall like this Climbers spend the night hanging on a rope Will they sleep And if they do what will they dream It s impossible to see the climbers with the naked eye Enlarged through a binoculars we see a climber who has found a place to stand With a rope he she is hauling up equipment from a fellow climber below From the valley floor it is possible to spot the climbers through a strong telescope Yosemite is a fantastic experience Words nor pictures can describe or show this wild beauty Landscapes of hills and mountains Trees growing on bare rocks A glacier shaped landscape We are amazed that trees can grow on these solid rocks The sun is going down as

  • Mammoth via Death Valley to Las Vegas - Minkukel
In a small oasis we found this restaurant where we stopped for lunch This is the only road runner we saw Desert landscape in Death Valley We stopped many times to look at nothing and to hear nothing Death valley In the desert there is nothing but even nothing can be very beautiful The road goes on and on Maybe one or two curves should have been considered Just sand and stones but with a bit of color it becomes a piece of art This part of the desert is covered with small stones Some plants survive here but we see no animals It is so silent that you can hear yourself think wow this is silent A raven and some palm trees live in this small oasis Just dry sand everywhere but even in these sand dunes there are some plants that managed to survive After going down hill for many kilometers we suddenly reach sea level And the road continues to go down Here we have reached 61 meter below sea level In the middle of the desert we find these white areas which appear to be made up of salt Crusts of salt cover the ground After crossing the death valley we found these eroded hills Nature can be very creative Different colors and shapes are the result of many years of erosion Art or nature We left the death valley behind us hoping to see some wildlife on the road But we didn t find any wild life until we reached Las Vegas in Nevada Las Vegas not Paris Colorful Las Vegas It s fun to look around a bit in Las Vegas We arrived in Las Vegas where we had booked a hotel for the night A lot of lights a lot of casinos Hmmmmmm

  • Las Vegas via Zion to Grand Canyon - Minkukel
trail The trail followed this canyon of pink and white rocks decorated with trees The trail in many places is quite narrow with a rock wall on one side and a steep drop at the other side Not suitable if you have acrophobia Views into the deep canyon along the trail Another cave like spot along the trail Watch your head Zion National Park has many of these picturesque rock formations The trail ended on top of the rock bridge which we had admired earlier from a distance We now look back on the road we followed an hour ago Zion National Park offers thousand of photo opportunities Another special rock in Zion National Park This one is called the checkerboard rock because of the pattern of squares on its surface Leaving the Zion National Park we continued our road toward Grand Canyon Here we had stopped at a small museum in a cave which had a display of axes and other tools used by Indians It also had a collection of dinosaur footprints A panoramic view on our way to the Grand Canyon We are now approaching the north rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona as we pass through this forest which has suffered from fires It is getting late and we have to hurry to reach Grand Canyon before the sun goes down We arrive at the Grand Canyon north rim at the exact moment when the sun is sinking below the horizon Just in time to enjoy this beautiful moment The sun has disappeared but we still have enough light to see the canyon in all its greatness What a fantastic place this is Looking down we see this rock sticking out into the canyon a perfect place The light is fading and it is quickly

Grand Canyon We have booked a half day mule ride into the canyon No experience is needed because an experienced cowboy is our guide and the mules know the way We follow the North Kaibab trail down into the canyon This trail is used by hikers to reach the river far below from where they can proceed to the South Rim But that is a two days hike Along the trail we see rocks of different colors white pink and red Pink rocks near the trail The forest on the slopes of Grand Canyon has a variety of trees It s autumn so many trees show bright yellow and red colors Our cowboy guide stops regularly to give explanations about the canyon We learn a lot of unexpected things This rock hanging over the trail is called the Hanging Rock Some rocks are bright red Far below the trail continues We are already planning to come back one day to hike all the way down Beautiful views of the cliffs as our mules turn around and take us back to the top After lunch we started on foot to walk the Uncle Jim Trail This is a hike through the forest toward the Uncle Jim Point with another view of the canyon The hike took about three hours roundtrip The Uncle Jim Trail leads through a forest with white trees The trees are shedding bright yellow leaves Yellow autumn leaves Yellow leaves pine cones These trees have eyes There is a lot to see along the trail The trail takes us to the Uncle Jim Point with new panoramas to enjoy From here we can also look back and down to the Kaibab trail where we had our mule ride earlier today The canyon is 1800 meter deep but we never see the bottom The river is always hidden between the steep walls of the canyon I love it here Grand Canyon landscape with a few clouds Every view is different After our hike we took the car to visit some other points with views over the canyon The road first took us through this burnt forest area Different views as we follow the Cape Royal Road over the Walhalla Plateau Nature has here created a window in the rocks Angels Window The sun is getting lower and the rocks show their best colors at the end of the day No photo can express the beauty and capture the size of the canyon But sticking three photos together can help a bit At Cape Royal we wait for the sunset The sun plays games with the rock walls in the canyon The last sunlight One more minute The end of a Grand Day With the sun down it is quickly getting colder and we drive back to the same hotel in Jacob Lake Tomorrow will take us back to Las Vegas but on the way we will again spend some more time in the beautiful Zion National Park Goto Day
