    Wild These two units represent heavily utilized public hunting areas adjacent to the greater Birmingham metropolitan area Alabamians love the outdoors and want it to be protected What s especially important about this conservation action is how close these protected lands are to the largest municipality in the state Everyone from hunters to hikers will benefit and be able to enjoy this area for generations said Governor Bob Riley This Project has been crucial in our efforts to advance the long term protection of recreational lands in Central Alabama said Barnett Lawley Lawley serves a dual role as Commissioner of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and Chairman of the Forever Wild Land Trust Board of Trustees Commissioner Lawley concluded by adding that despite their being fewer opportunities for large projects within central Alabama this project and the 2007 purchase of about 10 000 acres in Coosa County s longleaf hills have struck a home run for our citizens 71 000 acres of land protected for recreational use by future generations Molpus Timberlands Management manages the forest resources within the lease area and entered into discussions with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources about the possibility of the project over two years ago We are pleased to play a role with Forever Wild in such a unique transaction and we look forward to working with the State of Alabama to provide public land utilization opportunities for its citizens I believe that other states will follow Alabama s lead said Dick Molpus President of Molpus Timberlands Management Ken Sewell Chief Operating Officer of Molpus Timberlands Management said Recreational opportunities abound within a well managed working forest and this agreement makes these opportunities available to be enjoyed by an increased number of people Hopefully this is the first of several such transactions we are able to play a role in developing In addition to completing the successful purchase of the recreational lease Forever Wild now has protected over 200 000 acres of land for long term habitat protection and recreational use State Lands Director Patti Powell added that the project demonstrates the flexibility of the Forever Wild Program at a time when many government programs are being challenged with unique economic circumstances In recognition of the forethought of our state legislators actions 17 years ago when they created Forever Wild Alabama is benefiting from some unique land opportunities at a time when other options are extremely limited No other program can deliver these large recreational opportunities for our citizens providing for an enhancement of our quality of life in Alabama concluded Powell The project also has a significant economic benefit to the state of Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Director Corky Pugh indicated that Forever Wild has been monumental in securing affordable accessible hunting opportunities for the rank and file citizens of Alabama now and into the future The value of these opportunities for healthy family based recreation is of growing significance and hunting is an economic engine in Alabama

  • The Trust for Public Land Acquires Property from Molpus Client | Molpus Timberland Investment
    and its objectives of responsible forest stewarship Congress created Cumberland Gap National Historical Park in 1940 to preserve the gateway to the west a natural gap in the Appalachian Mountains crossed by almost 300 000 settlers as they moved from the East in America s early years The park is known today for its scenery caves rich history and more than 70 miles of trails This acquisition is a major victory for both the park and the community said Mark Woods Superintendent of Cumberland Gap NHP It means protection of almost all the land around Fern Lake and that lake s watershed has provided drinking water for the city of Middlesboro since the late 1800s TPL s purchase will also protect the view from the park s popular Pinnacle Overlook where visitors look at three states Tennessee Kentucky and Virginia It is the most popular overlook in the park because of the spectacular view Woods said Phase I of the Molpus property 1 266 acres will be transferred to the National Park Service next month using 1 9 million from the Land and Water Conservation Fund LWCF secured last year by U S Senator Mitch McConnell and U S Representative Hal Rogers both of Kentucky When money to buy the remaining 905 acres is available TPL will convey the last phase to NPS In previous years Sen McConnell and Rep Rogers had secured another 1 9 million from the LWCF to protect the watershed s first 1 850 acres This project was made possible through their leadership in securing enactment of the Fern Lake Conservation and Recreation Act included in the 2004 Consolidated Appropriations Bill Cumberland Gap National Historical Park stretches for 25 miles along Cumberland Mountain and contains almost 24 000 acres of historical cultural and natural resources Located where Tennessee Kentucky and Virginia meet the break in the Appalachian mountain chain provided the first opening to the American West through which Daniel Boone and thousands of pioneers traveled Cumberland Gap s diverse resources are coupled with its numerous recreation opportunities With 70 miles of hiking trails visitors can experience spectacular views and trace the footsteps of early settlers Sightseeing at the historical sites hiking horseback riding camping and caving are among the activities available Additional information is available at the following website www nps gov cuga The Trust for Public Land TPL a national private nonprofit conservation organization founded in 1972 protects land for people to enjoy as parks greenways community gardens urban playgrounds and wilderness Since its inception in 1972 TPL has completed more than 3 000 projects in 43 states protecting more than 2 5 million acres of land TPL depends upon the support of individuals corporations and foundations TPL s recent conservation efforts in Kentucky have involved helping the state acquire land for a new state forest and supporting the creation of local parks in the Louisville metro area TPL depends on the support and generosity of individuals foundations and businesses to achieve our land
