    Garner Green House is considered one of the last turn of the century neoclassical mansions that once lined North State Street Due to threats of its demolition several local individuals and organizations campaigned for its survival It was physically moved from across the street to its present location in 1983 Built in 1910 this house originally located at 647 N State Street was designed by Jackson architect Emmet Hull for Garner W Green a prominent timber and oil attorney residing in Jackson Over the following seventy five years the house served as the stately home of the Green family and later as an antique store A distinguished pioneer family the Greens have been pivotal in the history of Jackson for five generations The Greens were one of five or six families who developed Jackson in the early 1830s One of Garner Green s five children Winifred Green Cheney noted cook and author relates that her father loved nature so much that he would never let Mrs Green disturb the very active beehive in the large right front column of the house Cheney says that she believes that column must still be full of honey A fire in 1984 burned the

    click here About Us Office Restoration Project Details Garner Green House Restoration Project Details Garner Green House Restoration When the property at 647 N State Street was sold for commercial use threatning one of the last turn of the century neoclassical mansions that once lined North State Street several local individuals and organizations campaigned for its survival After successful negotiations the house was moved across the street virtually intact and carefully rehabilitated for its new use as professional offices Originally designed by architect Emmet Hull the two story hipped roof frame house was built in 1910 Over the next seventy five years the house served as the stately home of the Green family and later as an antique store The general condition of the house had deteriorated over the last several years and a fire in 1984 burned the rear porch severely charring the adjacent siding ceilings and roof structure Nevertheless the significance of the Garner Green House to Jackson s past and its nomination to the National Register of Historic Places made rehabilitation the prime objective The new owner wanted to preserve the house according to guidelines that would allow him rehabilitation tax credits He also required that it be adapted for revenue producing leasable office space and the design had to be flexible enough to accommodate several possible tenants The restoration architect s objectives were to respectfully restore the exterior including authentic details and colors and preserve as many of the interior rooms including details and materials as possible These goals were complicated by the fact that the entire structure except for the masonry chimneys had to be moved 500 yards and lowered onto a new foundation before rehabilitation work could even begin Previous fire damage had to be repaired and the requirements of contemporary mechanical and electrical

    gave speeches to the restoration of a historic theater in Biloxi to the restoration of depots in Eupora and Oxford These rehabilitations represent a commitment to the preservation of Mississippi s history and desire to save and reuse important landmarks of the past A diverse group of dynamic preservation projects worthy of awards are being recognized this year said David Preziosi Executive Director of the Mississippi Heritage Trust The variety of projects show that with dedicated owners organizations or local governments preservation is a financially viable and publicly beneficial option for properties in need of rehabilitation The projects that are recognized with the 2004 Heritage Awards demonstrate that a little vision of the possibilities of a deteriorated and neglected property can result in a building that is beneficial to the entire community The Heritage Award recipients exemplify the thought that preservation is about more than saving buildings These projects prove that preservation is good for business it changes lives and it lays a strong foundation for the future The Molpus Woodlands Group was chosen to receive one of two Awards of Excellence given this year for the rehabilitation and restoration of the Tatum Lumber Company buildings for their Timberlands Management offices The site of the Molpus Timberlands Management headquarters was in the early 20th century a thriving company town complete not only with sawmills planer mills and dry kilns but also with a headquarters building company store commissary church school doctor and workers houses all owned and operated by the Tatum Lumber Company Notwithstanding the deterioration around them the office and the commissary building were remarkably intact Utilizing the tax credits the owners were able to complete the restoration and rehabilitation of two of the buildings The rehabilitation of the original office building was complicated by the desire to preserve
