  • Orchestral Audition Masterclasses - About
to maintain a high standard of playing they also have to develop a commercial instinct they have to learn how to promote and manage their careers In effect they are running a small business the product they are selling is their skill as a musician and their personality This is the reason why all the major music colleges run professional development departments Their aim is to help prepare students for the business aspect of postgraduate life Continuing Professional Development CPD For me being able to watch the video afterwards bearing in mind the panel s feedback was perhaps the most useful part Their comments about my body language had even more impact when I could see it for myself I understand how important it is to look poised and relaxed even if the playing sounds good and perhaps to match the body language with the mood of the music Hearing the others play was also very useful and I will try to come along to future sessions if there will be more I took a huge amount away from the afternoon I attended many thanks Helen Vidovich Flautist and Audition Masterclass participant Most musicians find however that no matter how keen their commercial instincts there are moments in their professional careers when they seek advice from respected orchestral colleagues to develop new orchestral opportunities Our Audition Masterclasses have been developed to provide a Continuing Professional Development resource for musicians at this critical moment in their career when they feel ready to expand their orchestral horizons and would benefit from the advice of trusted colleagues to help them to achieve their aims The question is who to turn to for advice As a professional organisation in close working contact with orchestral fixers around the country we receive a steady stream of inquiries from players new to the profession as well as from experienced orchestral players at critical moments of change in their careers requesting advice about how to expand their orchestral opportunities We always point out that although there is no structured path to success in the orchestral world this does not mean that there is nothing that a musician can do to further their career One of the most important pieces of advice we give is to take consultation lessons with experienced orchestral players These are musicians who can give valuable insights and guidance into the techniques a professional orchestral player needs to focus on to expand their orchestral network The problem is that it s not always easy to make contact with busy orchestral players who quite naturally want to protect their time and privacy Orchestral Audition Masterclasses It is in the context of this lack of formal support for professional orchestral musicians and the difficulty in securing consultation lessons that Morgensterns and the Musicians Union have partnered to offer this important Continuing Professional Development resource for the orchestral profession Audition Masterclasses offer professional orchestral players the opportunity to perform orchestral excerpts in front of a panel of experienced

  • Samara Ginsberg writes for Rhinegold Publications Classical Music Magazine about Audition Masterclasses
about the skills needed to be successful at audition it s about the standards of playing and preparation of course but also about how you present yourself in this unique situation The Audition Masterclass is a very welcome new addition for young professional musicians Simon Channing Head of Woodwind and panellist on the 31st January Fairfield Halls The project is funded jointly by Morgensterns and the MU with Morgensterns providing the staffing and administrative support and the MU funding the venue hire and panellists fees as well as promoting it through its networks It is a partnership that Morgensterns says has been a success Right from the start we received amazing support from the MU as well as from clients such as Edward Vanderspar principal viola of the LSO and Nicholas Cox principal clarinet with the Royal Liverpool Philharminic whose advice was incredibly valuable At the pilot masterclasses a total of 20 panellists representing many major British orchestras put participants through their paces in the concerto movements and orchestral excerpts that they would be expected to present at an audition Morgenstern says that giving panellists the freedom to say whatever they want is one of the most important things about the concept panellists sitting on official auditions aren t allowed to say much to participants because expectations can be inadvertently raised by comments such as you played really well which could cause problems for the orchestras Panellists have to sit back listen take notes and that s pretty much it from the applicant s view point Panellists Richard Bayliss Torbjorn Hultmark Simon Wills David Stewart For panellists many of whom are experienced teachers as well as orchestral players this goes against their natural instincts In our Audition Masterclasses panellists are liberated from these restrictions and are free to give advice and suggestions to participants I really enjoyed the morning It was great to be able to give feedback to the candidates hopefully constructive and helpful I would love to be involved in any future events David Stewart Professor at the Guildhall School of Music and member of London Brass the ASMF and previously a member of the LPO The Dragons Den format is really good because it provides participants with different viewpoints Panellists are selected from different orchestras to bring a variety of experience to their comments A principal of a symphony orchestra is likely to have a slightly different focus from that of a ballet or an opera orchestra principal and this variety of panellists brings a rich range of opinions to comments about participants One of the dragons for the first masterclass on 13th January was David Juritz former leader of the London Mozart Players Juritz admits that he has never enjoyed auditions himself and is always rooting for candidates to play well Sometimes I feel as if we should have a psychoanalyst s counch in the warm up room he laughs but admits that he s only half joking Nobody enjoys auditions However long you ve been
