  • Courtney Barnett on Writing Style and Being an Indie Artist - Music Connection Magazine
artistic voice came into being with a song or performance Barnett I m not sure When I started writing songs and was a teenager I was so earnest and serious I just wanted so badly for people to hear them I wanted to write the perfect song every time And once I let go of all those ideas of what I had to do and what it all meant and what people thought that s when I started writing good songs when I stopped considering it so much and stressing out about all the outside possibilities I don t know That could be something MC What about influences Are there other artists you consider a direct influence on your style or are those artists incidental to your vision And speaking of influences what about outside influences We understand you re a fan of writers like Roald Dahl Do those sorts of influences play a part in your songwriting Barnett I don t have a songwriting God I kind of come from all the stuff I like which is a lot I even find stuff I don t like inspiring which is a weird thing to say I find inspiration in all different places I just kind of put it all together and then it helps me figure out other ideas or other kinds of aspects of what I m doing I kind of just find ideas everywhere MC Some of your songs incorporate elements from your personal life Do those sorts of details help you connect with your songs especially when performing them Barnett I don t need any help to connect with my songs Writing them is the connection there I write about what I know and what I experience most of the time Not all the time but most of the time And the writing process is me kind of figuring out what s going on or helping me get through whatever the situation is So once it s finished recorded and played live it takes on a different meaning Other people hear it and they interpret it in their own way MC Can you tell us about the sort of gear you use and how it affects your sound And what about being a lefty does playing left handed affect your musical style Barnett No the only thing with being left handed is I need to have my own guitar everywhere because you can t just break a guitar and borrow someone else s which is annoying sometimes I m pretty basic I ve only got a couple pedals like some distortion and chorus and delay All my songs so far are just like standard tuning so there s nothing crazy going on there I mostly play between a Jag uar and a Telly Telecaster The Telly s a cleaner sound I guess than the Jag I only got the Jag this year so it s been really great playing with that It s like a whole

  • Mark Ronson: On Bruno, Amy and Divine Inspiration - Music Connection Magazine
Ronson I know all of those things from when I started getting into DJing when I was 17 and 18 We would go to all of these record stores in Soho for rock soul and hip hop and they also have these record conventions on the weekends There was such a strong link between the hip hop acts and R B I knew Rotary Connection from a sample in Bonita Applebaum by A Tribe Called Quest The late 60s and early 70s soul when it got more orchestral with the arrangements and a touch of psychedelia that s some of my favorite music of all time As far as Minnie Ripperton she s one of my favorites with her voice and the production MC Two years ago this week we interviewed Jeff Bhasker who was working on your record Uptown Special at that time He told us that you were really good at crossword puzzles Ronson I got Jeff hooked on crossword puzzles I didn t used to be good but it is the kind of thing that you can do every day I m hopeless at English crossword puzzles it s just the New York Times that my brain is attuned to and those weird words Read More COVER STORY Grammy Winning Producer Songwriter Jeff Bhasker MC Jeff indicated that there might be a correlation between making records and figuring out crosswords Ronson I guess I can t say I agree with him Now that he s gotten better at crosswords I wonder if he d change his tune Doing a crossword is something in my day that I can do in my own order on my own time In making a record you bring your own knowledge to it and it helps but it s often moments of divine inspiration when you are hoping to get a track going and that s the only thing you can t control I definitely feel like there is a part of my brain that is good at problem solving and I am sure it helps out in music a little bit MC It is interesting to think that someone with your production credits perceives making music as an art in which you lack control Ronson Making music is a strange profession It s something you can choose to do in your life but no matter how much you practice or how much experience you have or how good the people that you are working with are you can go to work and spend 12 hours doing everything you can do to get a good idea going and still leave empty handed at the end of the day or the week MC Your staying power as a producer is impressive To what do you attribute your longevity Ronson I don t know I have definitely had peaks and valleys It s hard to answer a question like that without sounding a bit like a douche because it s about myself and I

  • Panic! At the Disco: Brendon Urie's Bachelor Party - Music Connection Magazine
Oh man the chorus starts off talking about the black magic of Mulholland Drive near the infamous Wonderland Avenue murders and a Manson murder and pools under desert skies Those are just images that I carry with me on tour I love driving on Mulholland and around the neighborhood and seeing how beautiful it actually is Remembering all the history up here It s not so much going downtown and partying it s the infinite moments that no one else can share I wrote the title track on the piano I wanted to write a Frank Sinatra song in honor of his 100th birthday this year but then I put it over a beat I had been working on separately so I melded those two worlds together I didn t even know if it was going to be on the album but it turned out to be the title track I had a little revelation there MC That song seems particularly sentimental for you How did it evolve Urie For Death of a Bachelor I just recorded piano and vocal trying to make something like an arrangement by famed Sinatra bandleader Nelson Riddle I didn t even know if it was going to make the album But then I took the piano out and started adding all these Roland TR 808 drum beats It became something entirely different that I didn t originally envision this monster There were a couple of other big moments like that for me I was working out a song called Don t Threaten Me with a Good Time and it sampled Rock Lobster by the B 52 s I honestly thought I would never get the rights to the song but it was so cool because B 52 s singer Kate Pierson signed off on it That never happens it s usually Fuck off whatever I also wanted the song to sound like Queen that was the original idea So I stacked harmonies on harmonies on harmonies and created different characters I told myself Okay I m going to sound more like drummer singer Roger Taylor and a soul singer Some of my favorite moments are on that song especially when the Queen harmonies swell in MC Were you more involved with the production of Bachelor compared with past Panic releases Urie Yeah it s kind of progressed I kind of took the reins with songwriting and producing on our third album Vices Virtues This album is me even more so The more I would write the more I would figure out new things to try MC Was the idea of crafting the album by yourself intimidating Urie I don t know about intimidating but it was daunting There s a lot of work that goes into it that I didn t realize Showing up is the rule I have As long as I show up in the studio usually something happens and I ll find myself in a place where I m excited creatively
