  • Don Henley on Songwriting and Collaborating for "Cass County" - Music Connection Magazine
think things have changed for a lot of small towns When the trucking industry became big after WWII they built bypasses around these little towns So people don t come through anymore they just zip on by You know that happened in Winslow Arizona laughs Route 66 used to go right through town And they bypassed Winslow so they built that little park commemorating the song Take it Easy and they put a bronze statue out there to try to lure people there So that s what we re trying to do in my hometown We re trying to come up with things to revive it I m still a small town kid even though I ve been around the world and seen a lot of things MC It s great that you re using your art to call attention to these kinds of things Henley I don t think my album is gonna revive my town or anything but people need hope They need something to hang on to in these times The middle class is disappearing The middle ground is disappearing politically speaking They can t even agree to disagree in Washington And I wrote a song about that too called No Thank You These are tough times MC This is your first solo album in 15 years What made the timing right to release it now Henley Well I finally got a break from touring with The Eagles We ve been on the road almost every year since we got back together in 1994 I also have three teenagers so there hasn t been a whole lot of time for solo work I started making this album about six years ago And I just had to work on it during the little windows of time between touring with The Eagles and being a dad I ve never been that prolific I ve always believed in quality over quantity But I m gonna have to speed up the process because I don t have that much time I can t wait another 15 years laughs MC Is there a favorite place you like to go when you have the time to write Henley Yeah there are a few places I ve had really good luck off the Pacific Coast Highway out here A lot of my 80s and 90s solo stuff was written out here Boys of Summer was written at a place called Zuma Beach I like to write in the car because it s a nice isolated space and the scenery s always changing I live in Dallas Texas and it s about 160 miles from my hometown in Cass County And I ve got a couple of hundred acres there I have a campsite and I can build a camp fire and sit out there with a guitar and a beer or whatever and I have peace and quiet I can write pretty much anywhere except on the road I don t have much luck

  • 5 Seconds of Summer: Mates from Down Under - Music Connection Magazine
differently We ve been a band for four years now and everything has escalated really quickly And it s been amazing I wouldn t have it any other way You learn fast and you learn to be good at what you do Read More Summer is Far From Over MC Were there things that you were ready for or not ready for Any difficult challenges you had to face Irwin You re not ready for any of it and that s the best part you re not ready for playing in a stadium not ready for playing in an arena not ready for the attention that you get You re not ready for anything It shows the measure of a band how well they handle themselves We had to handle it together and learn how to make the most out of the situation and grow into our surroundings and our environment that we re in MC What are some of the lessons you learned from that early point in your career that you are now applying going forward with your new album and tour Irwin Early on in the tour you gotta realize that every opportunity is a good opportunity for your band Make the most of the situations you get because situations don t come around too often especially for a band just starting out So yeah you gotta make the most of things Advice I think paying attention to the fact that it s not supposed to be easy will get you a long way MC For those who aren t familiar with you guys you gained worldwide recognition via YouTube correct Irwin I wouldn t agree actually The most we ever got on our YouTube was probably 400 000 views and the first time we released an original song was when we first started getting recognition actually which was really incredible And that s why we re doing what we re doing with music and we ve only been doing it from then on That was in 2011 We released an original song called Gotta Get Out and that was a song about where we re from and our home The fans really gravitated toward that more so than our covers so from then on we stuck with that MC Louis Tomlinson from One Direction tweeted the link to that video claiming he was a fan of you guys Is that when the band reached out to you for touring How did they approach you Irwin Around the same time yeah the tour wasn t Where We Are it was the first stadium tour Take Me Home back in 2012 Back then I can t remember where we were that was years and years ago now It was in Adelaide in Australia That s about it we got the opportunity and we said Yes and then we came over to England and started writing our first ever album Started out from scratch over here England just like

you feature so much guitar on the new record was his playing an influence on what you do B o B Absolutely both directly and indirectly He was someone I sought out to put his ear to the song Back and Forth One of the interesting things he told me when he gave me some feedback was Bob there are a lot of things in the song that are technically wrong but that s the reason the song is jamming because it s an unorthodox approach I wouldn t change anything That s dope advice coming from one of the pioneers of the sound that influenced that song MC When we first heard Back and Forth it stayed on the brain for hours Why do you think it has this addictive effect B o B I think the way the music comes is the way that people hear it Songs influence your mind That s the way I came up with the song I was in a hotel room and the lyrics just slipped out If you have a microphone handy like I did or a microphone or a voice recorder you can record and remember it As an artist you don t really control moments like that It s like catching lightening in a bottle MC The title Violet Vibrato is so evocative Did the title generate that song B o B Violet Vibrato was a song I wrote in 2008 It predates my first album so the lyrics are very true and literal even but once the lyric was written it was like This is the title of the song I ve been sitting on that song for years so I decided to record it and put it out MC We ve written about Jon Bellion in this magazine He is featured with you as a co writer and also a guest on Violence What was your working chemistry like B o B I was working with Jim Jonsin in Miami a couple of months before and he was like Bob there s this dude named Jon Bellion and you ve really got to check him out I watched his video and I thought This is crazy really dope stuff I ended up meeting him and working with him and we went into the studio again to write songs It was a really amazing chemistry I compare Jon Bellion to the likes of Pharrell with a sound that can t be duplicated It s all in its own world Violence came about the same way It s crazy all of these songs came from me playing bass or some other instrument Jon got the idea immediately when I started playing this guitar riff I was just messing around and he was like Keep playing it Because I kept playing it he came up with the hook went right into the booth and laid it all out in one take Read More Songwriter Profile Jon Bellion MC You have

  • Twenty One Pilots: A Pair of Pop Pacesetters - Music Connection Magazine
on the weekends We were very strategic about what shows we played and when As a local band your goal is to rise above the talent that s there taking it one step at a time For us Columbus was that first step We always tried to outdo ourselves and wouldn t play the same set every night We slowly found this group of people that wanted to come out and see us MC Were there surprises during those early days Tyler Joseph With each big show that we d promote the most surprising part wasn t what we were doing on stage but how many people showed up That had a lot to do with us being strategic about our shows We didn t promote many like three or four a year The story gets blurry for us about how the music industry discovered that we existed One day we woke up after selling out a venue in Columbus and there were a dozen labels that wanted to talk to us That was a crazy moment for us It s when we realized that we could quit our day jobs MC It seems that you were careful not to branch out of Columbus before you were ready You didn t even play shows outside of your hometown area until after you d self released two entire albums So what s your philosophy about growing a career Joseph One of the things that Josh and I believe is that we have to continually outdo ourselves We realized that whether we were a local band or a national act we could have found ourselves getting into a groove almost like a rut as far as what the show looks like and how the music sounds Every time we d do a hometown show we d change things MC How did you take advantage of opportunities in Columbus in the early days Joseph There were no opportunities We had to email thousands of bars clubs and promoters just to get on the bill for one show Booking for yourself is a nightmare But we put our heads down and asked people if we could play There was never a bill that we turned down We played every show offered to us We created the opportunities by pouring everything we had into every live performance When you work hard like that the people that come out appreciate the show MC These days it s not easy to attract label interest How did you land your deal with Fueled By Ramen Joseph Starting out we didn t even know what it meant to get signed One of the most important things about moving into a partnership with a label is to make sure that you have creative control From what we could tell Fueled By Ramen had the feel of an indie label because they had a smaller lineup The people who work there are passionate about music and believe in artists having their
